In my honest opinion Jordon Zadorozy is one of the best songwriters out there. If it were up to me there would be a million FM radios out there playing his music from coast to coast. I was introduced to his music through his bands release "August Everywhere" and from that moment I was hooked. The record is heavily influenced by the likes of XTC and the Beach Boys with that Los Angeles delivery. Anyone that knows me will tell you I put this record in my 10 collection. The record is perfect from beginning to end with no filler. [...]

Photo by David Greenwald For many of us (not me! At least not yet...), it's back to school time. Which is reason enough for an end of summer mixtape, wouldn't you say? 1. This album could've been huge. Frontman Jordan Zadorozny was pals with Courtney Love and co-wrote some tracks on Celebrity Skin ; August Everywhere was released on Dreamworks Records in 1999, a time when the label was hot thanks to signing Elliott Smith and notable others. But the album tanked, commercially and presumably (as I haven't heard it mentioned in 8 years since) commercially. And no wonder: Blinker the Star stood far apart from many of the sounds of the era. It's not an album of worn-out alternative rock cliches, or burgeoning nu-metal, or [...]
Following up on the songs from Manic last week , I thought I'd clarify a point. I said that some of the songs on the Floor Boards EP sounded a little like Soulwax and Blinker the Star . Here are two relevant songs for comparison. In all likelihood, you'll listen and not recognize the similarities. Or you may think I'm spot on. Either way. Soulwax are a Belgian group better known for their mash-ups and DJ activities under the name 2 Many DJ's, but their [...]

1. Blinker the Star - Pretty Pictures - As Idolator recently pointed out, this 1999 album ended up by the wayside and it was a damned shame. This is timeless pop in the vein of Jellyfish. Lofty praise, well deserved. [from August Everywhere | buy ] 2. The Acorn - Blankets - This band's entire catalog is filled with fantastic songs such as this. It begins with a Sufjan-ese intro before morphing into a powerful Anathallo-ish anthem of goodness. [from Blankets | buy ] [...]

Time for yet another installment of the Coulda-Shoulda-Woulda Files, where we blow the dust off of a forgotten favorite and give its lack of chart success a once-over. Artist: Blinker The Star Song: August Everywhere , 1999 What happened: Long before the Canadian indie-rock scene took off, Montreal act Blinker the Star was considered a great white hope for the Great White North, thanks to frontman Jordon Zadorozny's songwriting smarts (he received a lone songwriting credit on Celebrity Skin , meaning that he [...]
