ALBUMS + TRACKS: 140 character reviews words: Jamie Milton It's about time we at MFM actually made use of twitter instead of just declaring to our followers how much we hate the BNP all the time. This feature might be a one-off, we'll see what the response is like. Here, we'll review this week's notable album releases as well as any new tracks that have exposed themselves over the last few days. When Secretly Canadian released Mystery , the debut EP from South African rock outfit BLK JKS, it wasn't just another case of a promising start from an exciting new band. It was a full-fledged statement, each of its four chaotic, layered tracks as capable of blindsiding you as the next. So it's a good thing they're not biding their time putting together a full-length record. BLK JKS will release that album, entitled After Robots , via Secretly Canadian on Sept. 8. The disc was produced by Brandon Curtis from the [...]

Here is everything I know about BLK JKS: Band formed in 2000 Band is from South Africa Band has actual talent Band's EP, Mystery was remastered and released in the states via Secretly Canadian Band's song Mystery is killer! Mystery - BLK JKS

You may recall that last week we were hyped for the upcoming BLK JKS/Foreign Born show , and what's more had quite a high musical expectations for the event. Suffice it to say, we were not disappointed. Both bands of the co-headlining gig delivered killers sets that served to underscore and expand their sound - exactly the way it should be in a live setting. We walked out of the show feeling that each of these bands, with their diverse and direct sounds, is on the verge of something great. [...]

Sometimes I come across bands that I think are okay. Sometimes they suck [and I'll be the first to admit it]. But sometimes there are bands that blow my fucking ears off - in a really good way. Blk Jks is one of the latter. Hailing from Johannesburg, South Africa, Blk Jks create loud, psychedelic South African pop music with ease. They implement heavy bass, crisp guitar, whistling, and spacey vocals to capture something new for our ears. The cover of their debut EP entitled Mystery conveys to us a story that we [...]

It's rare when a band completely stops me in my tracks, and that's exactly what BLK JKS have done. The South African quartet has definitely been shaking up the scene ever since they performed at SXSW earlier this year. Back in '07, they released a vinyl-only 103 that caught Diplo 's attention while touring S. Africa. After a bunch of shows were arranged in the states, things have absolutely taken off for them. They've often been compared to TV on the Radio , and Vampire Weekend ; but their heavy Afro-pop guitars, hints [...]

In their early days, the 88 used to get compared a lot to the Kinks. Now, as they showed on last year's "Not Only ... But Also," they've come into their own, and three albums into their career they can flex their musical muscles any which way. Tonight at the Key Club, the L.A. outfit will play two sets at the Key Club — at 9:15 they will cover Bob Dylan's 44-year-old masterpieece "Highway 61 Revisited" and follow with a set of their own material. ... The Manchester Orchestra hits the Troubadour behind their [...]
Starting tomorrow Foreign Born will be hitting the road performing all across North America with the likes of BLK JKS , Grizzly Bear , Warpaint , and most dates with The Veils . Although we missed them during this year's SXSW (partially cause I wasn't too familiar with them), we'll definitely be at their show at the Mohawk on July 19th . Also joining Foreign Born and The Veils (who I am familiar with) will be Other Girls . Tickets will not be available for purchase in advance [...]

It's tough enough seeing one incredibly solid band in a night, so getting to see two is a real treat. That's why we recommend you get yourself to the Independent on Friday night. Two bands, BLK JKS and Foreign Born , will be playing an evening of music that is certain to deliver. What's more, we're more than a little convinced that both are destined for even bigger things - this could be your best last chance to see them in such a small room. BLK JKS [...]
Molefi Makananise, Lindani Buthelezi, Mpumi Mcata, Tshepang Ramoba. Johannesburg.

I caught four bands last week: Amnion (great), thenewno2 (better than expected), Black Joe Lewis (fantastic) and Lucero (good). More on those shows later... Monday 5/18/09 [Pick of the Night] Gangi / The Life and Times / LANDy @ Spaceland (Free) – Gangi's residency continues. The lead singer of The Life and Times fronted Shiner; one of my favorite Kansas City bands back in mid-1990s. LAndy is fronted by Adam Goldberg, who starred in Dazed and Confused, one of my favorite films of the early 1990s. [Recommended] [...]
by kevin diamond Is there such a thing as perfection in art, life, or work? Is work for work's sake a noble goal? Or art for art's? How about pleasure? Why do we push ourselves to accomplish the things that we feel are important, and why are those important things different from person to person? Wouldn't it be easier if we all lived like ants, maintaining a common goal and sense of purpose? Or would we loose out on the rainbow-like spectrum of human emotion? When [...]

California natives Foreign Born are releasing their new album, Person To Person , June 23rd on Secretly Canadian . As a sneak peek to the album, we've got "Vacationing People" for free download, and a video for "Blood Oranges"! The sunny sound of "Vacationing People" is right out of California while its syncopated beats nod to Kenyan benga. A great song for a beautiful Friday morning.
