Like Thurston Moore and Rob Sheffield before him, AD contributor j. neas reflects on, and laments, the art of the (actual) mixtape. Now, raise your hand if you've created a muxtape (yes, I'm guilty). Part one of two. - AD "I spent hours putting that cassette together. To me, making a tape is like writing [...]

I'm going to be irrelevant for a change (or as normal, depending on your take on this blog) and just post up some (mostly) 80s classics with a clear message of advice. Pet Shop Boys' early hit "Love comes quickly" tells of the unexpected nature of love and the pointlessness of looking for it, a lesson everyone learns at some point in their lives. Blondie's "The Tide Is High" preaches to hold on despite hard times in love, while Kylie Minogue claims it's "Never Too Late" to recapture a lost flame. While I don't necessarily buy into Kylie's sugary optimism [...]

Itching for a new post category, I thought of starting a mixtape series, similar to the frequent lists compiled by a lot of other blogs. It might overlap a whole lot with some other posts, so it might be short-lived, but I'll just have to see how it plays out. For the first mixtape, I dug out ten tracks all about the first day of the week. Coincidentally, all of these Sunday songs are excellent, with many addressing the two sides of Sundays. On one hand, it's always a sort of mental (and often physical) hangover from the previous week, [...]

This post has nothing to do with Bill O'Reilly or GolfWeek magazine. No, today we're talking about the wonderful world of advertising. I tend to think of myself a discerning consumer, not easily swayed by Madison Avenue's efforts. In fact, like most people, I tend to change the channel, leave ...
As the 1970s gave way to the 80s, New Wave was splicing. Talking Heads had found African rhythms and Brian Eno. Blondie had gone in a different direction: disco. Moroder had stamped his authority over another of their hits, 'Heart of Glass' and the style was evident still in this epic cut, although produced by [...]

A very specific mood inspired this post about mistaken intentions and wrong ideas. Natalie Imbruglia's old single "Wrong Impression" is an optimistic track all about giving an object of your affection the wrong signals. Similarly, Amy Winehouse addresses the difficulty of remaining platonic with a certain someone despite past romantic entanglements in "Just Friends." Blondie look at the dilemma of misread emotions from the other side, after love has gotten in the way, in their classic disco-infused hit "Heart Of Glass." Enjoy the tracks and good luck to anyone in similarly sticky situations! Natalie Imbruglia, "Wrong [...]
In the music business predictions are notoriously difficult. The next big thing can disappear in a blaze of antipathy, Sigue Sigue Sputnik anyone ( Sigue Sigue Sputnik - Into The Unknown ) , how about Joboxers ? A global success can arise from the unlikeliest places, come on is there anyone out there who really predicted that The Gossip , ( The Gossip - Fire Sign ), would go super nova? So trying to spot the bands that will breakthrough is a risky business and a sure fire way to end up with egg on [...]

Picked up the reissue of Blondie's 1999 reunion album, No Exit , and listening to it made me mentally teleport, albeit briefly, back to the 80's. Two things come to mind when I usually hear 80's music: one, I never quite found much I really liked back then other than The Police and Toto . And two, I would have parted with a month's salary for a date with Nina Blackwood . That was then; this is now. Thank God. mp3: [...]

Here's a statement from Debbie posted on her official site: *First of all I want to say thank you to everyone who has come out to see my solo shows over the last few weeks around the country and in Canada. As we approach World AIDS Day, 10th Street Entertainment Management and myself thought this would be a special way to offer our support and do what we do best at the same time, namely providing music and entertainment to Debbie Harry fans. Here is a link to a free download of the Stonebridge remix of 'Two [...]
On this Thanksgiving week edition, something for everyone, including fans of early nineties dance pop, seventies punk, and oldies where it totally sounds like the backup singers are saying 'poop chute.' If you like the music, go out and buy it, preferably at a real store that could actually use your money and preferably not on Friday because who wants to deal with that . These songs are only here until next week's mix goes up. (And if you're new to this site and don't get what's happening, click here and you might get your question answered.) [...]

Tiger! Tiger! Genre: Garage / Rock From: Atlanta, Georgia United States Atlanta based punkish garage band Tiger! Tiger! returns with their second full length, 'The Kind of Goodnight' . Sculpted out of punk aggression the second Tiger! Tiger! opus is a cathartic battle cry. Sultry and frenetic vocalist, guitarist and principal songwriter Buffi Aguero cruelly croons away like the lustful daughter of [...]

I apologize in advance for not taking the time to put together cover art to go with this mix, but I'm totally spent this evening. I also apologize that the songs aren't properly sequenced (is that what I mean?)...you'll have to take on that task yourself. I found two mixes on my hard drive this evening that I made for a girl I once thought was pretty cool. I don't think much of her these days. Heh. Come to think of it, I never gave her either mix. I figured it would be a complete shame to delete [...]
7 Means of Movement: Flying Ray and Bob, Air Travel. Eddie Floyd, Big Bird. Frank Sinatra, Come Fly With Me. Away and away the aeroplane shot, till it was nothing but a bright spark; an aspiration; a concentration; a symbol (so it seemed to Mr. Bentley, vigorously rolling his strip of turf at Greenwich) of man's soul; of his determination, thought Mr. Bentley, sweeping round the cedar tree,
