Seattle-born musician K Ishibashi, who goes by the stage name Kishi Bashi, is a singer and multi-instrumentalist. Philly natives Blood Feathers are back at Johnny Brenda's tonight in full force now that drummer Patrick Marsceill is on a hiatus from the road with his other band, Sun Airway , working on a new album. The core of Blood Feathers is made up of Ben Dickey and Drew Mills. The duo formed the band back in 2005 after performing in various projects throughout the '90s in the local music scene. With the goal of performing new material that they had written, what came to fruition is a nostalgic brand of good ole fashion American rock [...]

Travel back in time tonight where pompadours and vintage guitar licks ruled the earth with Philly's favorite retro sons Blood Feathers . They'll be bringing their finely-crafted rock 'n' roll gems to the big stage of The Troc this evening to get the locals moving as the band warms up the crowd for rad grrrl power ensemble Wild Flag and Merge Records' indie popsters Hospitality. Good times will be had by all! The Trocadero, 1003 Arch St., 9pm, $18 adv/$20 door, All Ages (Photo by Derek Brad) - H.M. Kauffman

Even though the blog has been still for many a month now, my love-life hasn't. After a Russian doll-worthy series of lies, I conned my then-girlfriend into arriving at the PEP Boys parking lot at Broad and Federal in Philadelphia. That is, directly outside the stately row home we met six years ago as roommates. Where the Blood Feathers happened to be playing their beyond-lovely "You're Welcome." And Bands in the Backyard happened to be filming. The rest, as they say, is engagement history. Thank ya'll. And Kandace, this is the punishment for never posting [...]

Philly natives Blood Feathers ' sound can be summed up as fuzzy retro-rock guitars, backed by sixties girl group drum patterns, with the dual lead vocal harmonies courtesy of founders Ben Dickey and Drew Mills. Formed in 2005 by Dickey and Mills, who wanted to showcase their own material after cutting their teeth in various local bands in the '90s, the six-piece released their second album, Goodness Gracious, digitally last December to critical acclaim, and has received consistent airplay on NPR's World Café program (it's now available on vinyl through the Philebrity label). And tonight, they're returning home to [...]
If you told me Blood Feathers played a bad show, I'd be glad to call you a filthy liar. Ben & Drew are opening up for Philly's own Juston Stens (previously posted on here ) and San Antonia's Hacienda tonight at the North Star. Hacienda turn the early '60s dial a tad up from the Black Keys' level, mostly to great effect, as in the Beach Boys-esque, "I Keep Waiting." And really: do we need any more reason to go to a show after the words "Blood Feathers"? PS I've heard a four track [...]

Tonight at Kung Fu Necktie there will be vintage licks, fancy footwork and pompadours galore because Philly's time-traveling rockers Blood Feathers are back from the 50's and ready to get down. Ben Dickey and Drew Mills have been playing out as a duo quenching peoples' thirst for Blood (Feathers) and unveiling some new tunes they have been working on while their drummer is on tour with Sun Airway . This evening could be your chance to hear some of those new ditties full band style, and it will be your last chance for a while because tonight [...]

In the next two days, some of Noise Narcs' favorite Philly acts are playing in Philly. And both have some Noise Narcs connection. And man are we excited. Tomorrow, 1/20, a Drew Mills and Ben Dickey of Blood Feathers perform a rare, stripped-down set at Philly's intimate Tin Angel, featuring "material from the Blood Feathers songbook as well as a few surprises ." I wonder who suggested that a stripped-down set at the Tin Angel? And more importantly: Ohboyohboyohboy. Sounds like new material to us. As if that weren't enough of [...]
Ugh. What's worse? A blogger's spelling pun, or an American band's name utilizing British spelling? What's definitely not the worst is the subject: Favourite Sons, whose album we recently identified as our 29th most-anticipated release of 2011 , rose from the ashes of Philly's Aspera (those ashes have good company, Noise Narcs favorite and Blood Feather Drew Mills was also a member). The titular track of their upcoming The Great Deal of Love , to be released "soon," has everything we need in a winter warmer: a gravelly and emanating voice, plenty [...]
There's no doubt that the local music scene in Philly has busted out. This year, led by our faves including Dr. Dog & Free Energy the local scene is center stage nationally and for many of the reasons below. Here were some of the records this year that were of the best of the local music scene. In my very subjective opinion, 2010 was a high water mark banner year for local music created by Philly bands. For the last few years in particular the scene has been extremely happening, fertile and diverse. Nationally, Philly's prowess is being [...]

In my very subjective opinion, 2010 was a high water mark banner year for local music created by Philly bands. For the last few years in particular the scene has been extremely happening, fertile and diverse. Nationally, Philly's prowess is being felt cross many genres; from indie-rock and R&B to tomorrow's classic rock today, singers and songwriters, hip-hop and some of that old time rock and roll. It's (mostly) all good in the hood. So who made some of the best music in Philly this year? Read on. Dr. Dog [...]

Blood Feathers w/ Birdie Busch Tin Angel, 20 S 2nd St, Philly Thursday 1/20, 8:30PM Advance notice on an upcoming show that Noise Narcs had a hand in bringing into fruition. Back in September when we did our interview with Drew Mills with Blood Feathers , we mentioned that it'd be great to see Ben Dickey and Drew Mills do a singer-songwriter-esque set at Philly's super-intimate Tin Angel (an "acoustic cafe" which, nepotism disclosure, my dad books). So on January 20, they will be doing a gig with fellow Noise Narc-fave Birdie [...]

The Walkmen: photo by Michael Ligon The various spectrums of rock n' roll were on display this past Saturday night with a trio of acts that were bound to please everyone. It would only take one look at the MySpace URL of first opener Blood Feathers to guess what they specialized in. The Philly outfit were indeed a rock n' roll band of the highest degree, pumping out hard-rocking, r n' b, rockabilly-tinged numbers. Taking a reverse take on The Ramones whose members each took on Ramone as their last [...]

The Philadelphia Film and Music Festival livens up the city this coming weekend. Philly F/M will take place on Thursday, Sept 23 - Sunday, Sept 26th, 2010 and will feature a wide variety of regional, national and international musicians and films. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 10 Ever find yourself listening to Black Moth Super Rainbow 's Dave Fridmann-produced, analog-synth-heavy 2009 release Eating Us and think, "This is all fine and dandy, but what this album really needs is more distortion. And even more drugs." If so, BMSR frontman Tobacco 's latest solo release, Maniac Meat , is for you: 16 tracks of synth-saturated, groove-oriented, acid-trip electronica that saunters through the dancier side of psychedelic music. Tobacco performs with Junk Culture and Dreamend at 8 p.m. at First Unitarian Church ; [...]

Previously I've mentioned Philly's Blood Feathers a handful of times on Noise Narcs, but only to castigate myself for not having posted on them. But I'm glad I waited, since guitarist/singer Drew Mills was kind enough to answer a few questions from the road of their Summer's End tour. Blood Feathers plays harmonized stompin' rock with monster hooks, which never veers into dreaded roots rock territory despite influences as far afield as Bo Diddley and classic country. That members of the band have moonlighted in both Bob Wills and Tom Petty cover bands is [...]

and we're gonna have a party. Here's a plug for WXPN's annual XPoNential Music Festival that runs Friday through Sunday. There are over 40 bands (some of them aren't even granola singer-songwriters!) that will share three stages in a pretty Camden setting overlooking the Delaware River. All three days offer must sees and you can't beat the festival price (although early bird XPN members got the best deal - three day pass for $35.00). Get there by dinner on Friday to make sure you catch the never less than fantastic Alejandro Escovedo (6:45) and skip over [...]
