If it’s December, then you know it’s Mixmas time at You Ain’t No Picasso! Each year I get a bunch of my favorite bands to contribute themed mixes and share their thoughts about each of the tracks. MP3: Saskatchewan - Dreamboat Not only are Saskatchewan a great breakout group of 2011, they're poised to have [...]
THE VIDEOS THAT MADE MY WEEK #7 BLOOD ORANGE CHAMPANGE COAST (FAN VIDEO) Starring Vanilla Ice smooth talking a lady friend, what’s not to love? Props to the silly fools of Chambers vs Dolphins on the video. Always down for some Vanilla Ice nostalgia. “Champagne Coast” is off Blood Orange’s Coastal Grooves album via Domino Records . Photography By Max Gibson "Should I grab my camera?" I thought. Another memorable experience slipping through my fingers due to a lack of initiative. Another night where I bring my camera only to leave it in my bag. "It's not the right time," my unconscious self says, thrusting me further into the downward spiral of inactivity. But tonight would be different. Grabbing my camera half way through Blood Orange's one man set on Monday, I snapped as many shots as I could. It's [...]
► Bob Mould , whose three decades in rock includes seminal bands such as Hüsker Dü and Sugar and an estimable catalog of solo work, is feted in the program "See a Little Light: A Celebration of the Music and Legacy of Bob Mould" at Disney Hall. The program, hosted by veteran DJ Matt Pinfield, features performances by Dave Grohl, Britt Daniel, Ryan Adams, No Age, Craig Finn and Tad Kubler of the Hold Steady, Grant-Lee Phillips, Margaret Cho and Best Coast. And Mould himself will perform. ► The Cure kicks off three nights of its [...]
Fun, fun Friday: ► Hey, Cold War Kids , it's been a while. Last spotted turning in a brilliant sunset set at FYF Fest, the L.A. quartet plays a hometown date at the Troubadour behind their release from earlier this year, "Mine Is Yours." Electric Flower, the new duo pairing Imaad Wasif and Secret Machines drummer Josh Garza, opens. ► Blood Orange , the latest project from Lightspeed Champion's Dev Hynes, plays Skybar at the Mondrian as part of IAMSOUND's Mondrian Sessions . That's Blood Orange's video for "Forget It," above, a [...]

Frank Yang It's a little bit of bragging when I point out that our blogger posse had Lykke Li close out the second day of our Hot Freaks! party at SXSW 2008 before her star became ascendant. But the fact is that it was almost entirely Gorilla Vs Bear's doing, with most of the rest of us having no idea who Li Lykke Timotej Zachrisson was at the time. And not too many did, as only a modest number of people came out to Club DeVille to see play that [...]

Considering it's rich history and iconic heritage, it fills me with great pride to see my homeland's music scene thriving. Spanning the UK's many aural genres, there's a myriad of music to suit all tastes and dispositions. It's been a challenge to cull this list down to just ten artists, but those who are listed here have earned my vote as the top bands in Britain today. Coming straight from Tyneside, this eclectic act blends elements of electronica and krautrock, resulting in locomotive-like grooves, [...]

Looks like the last gasp for the NBA season is going on in the desperate labor talks. The funny thing is that nobody is really missing the NBA except for the economic impact on restaurants around US arenas. Have fun playing overseas, guys. Blood Orange (not pictured, he's a dude not Slutever ) is about to start his European tour and we thought we'd just splash up a little reminder of how good he is to get ya in the mood. Bad Girls by Blood Orange
London's Clock Opera is a difficult group to pin down with a genre. Their brand of swirling anthemic indie dance defies a more specific description. Frontman Guy Connelly joins Andy West (bass, guitar, synths), Che Albrighton (drums, samples) and Dan Armstrong (samples, synths, keyboards, backing vocals) to form the workings of the group. Clock Opera rose to fame with its release of several singles, notably "A piece of String," "Belongings," "Once and for All" and their most recent, "Lesson No. 7." For me though, the Clock Opera tracks that I've really fallen in love with are their remixes. [...]

In my book there's nothing better for a persons development then having to perform under pressure. The bigger the audience, the higher the stakes, the more to lose, the better. There's something about those situations that requires you to simply man up and perform. It begs you to destroy your comfort zone, fail and constantly push yourself to get better at whatever it is you do. It also requires you to be out there all the time, in the mix, on hypothetical stage performing, trying new things and pushing it. It doesn't matter if [...]
When the Hard Candy team hit up MomaPS1 this summer to see Grimes and Solange , we also had the opportunity to catch Blood Orange 's set. I'll freely admit prior to the event he was not on my radar, but I left the show impressed by what I had seen, and sought out his debut album Coastal Grooves . It's a lovely mellow album filled with lots of interesting electric guitar riffs and wistful vocals. His next single [...]
