The friendly people from Seattle's Portable Shrines Collective recently sent me a copy of their vinyl-only compilation, Portable Shrines Magic Sound Theatre Vol. I . The double LP features rare and exclusive tracks by eighteen garage, psych, and experimental bands from the Pacific Northwest and beyond. The compilation features heavy hitters AFCGT and Kinski (Sub Pop), Eternal Tapestry (Thrill Jockey, Not Not Fun), as well as tracks by a host of up-and-coming Northwest psych acts including Night Beats, Midday Veil, This Blinding Light and Blood Red Dancers. The deluxe gatefold packaging features artwork by Aubrey Nehring , [...]

( Editor's note: We've got a truckload of good new stuff for you today. But, first, I have to get two things off my chest and out of my brain. 1.) Mrs. Citizen watches Glee. (For those of you in Williamsburg (colonial or otherwise) this is a television program that features popular music re-created by a lovable group of high school misfits. It is, in my humble, truly execrable.) Since she watches Glee, I occasionally watch Glee. Mrs. Citizen also listens to terrestrial radio. She often makes the joke that I do not [...]

One of the first things I overheard after Blood Red Dancers began their Saturday set in the crimson confines of the Cha Cha was, "they're like the Doors, except good" . With all due respect to BRD-and I have to assume they'd agree with me on this one-the local bass/drum/keyboard trio are NOT better than the Doors. I'm sorry, I just can't get on board with that particular sentiment. The Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek-led blues-rock band is one of the premier American outfits to rock the 60s and knock on the individual [...]
Blood Red Dancers ::: photo by Abbey Simmons "We've come a long way together…through the hard times and the good…" You begin your day with three other people sardined into your twin-size bed and a Fatboy Slim song blasting on your alarm clock radio. Who knew the Fruit Bats would be Seattle's best aphrodisiac? I'm not saying [...]

Wild Orchid Children at the Cha Cha - CHBP 2008 ::: photo by Abbey Simmons Just when you thought you didn't have that many scheduling dilemmas for this years Capitol Hill Block Party, comes the Cha Cha's CHBP line-up and it certainly complicates my plans. For me, it's not really Capitol Hill Block Party without a [...]
Perfect Seattle. Dark, grungy, heavy audio emo; smoking cigarettes in your basement level brick apartment building sipping a glass of Maker's Mark that you bought with your last bit of your cash for the week because, fuck it, who needs food when you can sip some decent whiskey? (I think i'm becoming a hipster) This dude trio is a bit outside the norm as far as normal goes (misnomer). Bass, keys, drums, ok, yes... dark, bluesy piano, simple but melodic bass, grated vocals that you half expect to hear dip below [...]
It's a weekend of celebration for fellow music bloggers and friends: Ear Candy and Back Beat Seattle. Both blogs are celebrating milestones with some kick ass local bills and you could make a full weekend of their shows alone. First up on Friday night is Back Beat Seattle. Back Beat is celebrating the site's one [...]

Blood Red Dancers ::: all photos by Abbey Simmons Saturday night Blood Red Dancers celebrated the release of their EP Bikini Island with a gritty, brooding set of their brand of the blues at The Blue Moon. Blood Red Dancers specialize dark, raw drinking songs delivered with powerful performances from each member of the trio. Singer [...]

"Masters of War" is the truth. Bob Dylan's 1963 screed against Johnson's military-industrial complex closes with (I'd argue) the most powerful eight lines in popular music: "And I hope that you die/and your death will come soon/and I'll follow your casket/by the pale afternoon/and I'll watch while you're lowered/down to your deathbed/and I'll stand over your grave/'till I'm sure that you're dead." It's an obvious anti-war song and one of our best. (long aside: Although the man himself has said that it's not an anti-war song per se, but a pacifistic statement against war, I think that what [...]

Citizen Dick favorites Blood Red Dancers recently passed along to us that they'll be entering the studio in July, with a new record set to smack the universe in the face sometime in August. Fans of the brutal and literary lyricism, punching, throbbing bass, wanderingly nefarious keyboards and pounding percussion of last year's EP Let Him Fight; I'll Be in the Breadline should be particularly excited. Folks who missed the boat on that record can get a taste below and begin to anticipate new material in August. Per usual, we'll have analysis of the record for you when [...]

Throwing Elbows at the Bit Saloon A delightful bulleted list of schtuff that I have had on my mind regarding this thing we love so much: The Liars Club headlined a RAWKIN' show last night at the Bit . Special thanks to the Blood Red Dancers who kicked out the jams. Was it a short set, or did I just want to HEAR MORE? Fortune 500 was impressive as well, with a fine rendition of REO Speedwagon's "Take It on the Run". I think [...]
This Sunday, Nov 30th is the perfect way to round off your Thanksgiving break. Two local Subsonic favorites, The Liars Club and Blood Red Dancer s, in one place for one low price. To make it even easier on your constitution, this is all going down at the Sunset Tavern's Sunday Bloody Sunset - a Sunday afternoon concert series usually focusing on up-and-coming local acts. Doors open at 4 and last through about 8. An easy way to continue that Bloody Mary buzz [...]

I stumbled upon Pale Young Gentlemen a long while back thanks to a fairly negative review from Pitchfork, and was convinced for a short period of time that these swaggering hooligans would be the next big thing. I even convinced my record label friends to listen to them, but they shook their hipster heads and claimed that it wasn't "bearded" enough ... or something. But, I promise you this, if you can sit through their self-titled release without breaking in to a grin, or being able to fight off the urge to grab a bosomy barmaid and swing her too [...]
Blood Red Dancers are timeless . . Sweetie's Gettin' Mobbed . They're an unconventional trio of bass, keyboards and rhythm with vocals primarily from Aaron Poppick that would be just as well suited for cursing the Gods from upon mountain high as they are for cracking the paint in the local venues. It teeters on the edge of self destruction - a cigarette ash 3 inches long, but still [...]
