On listen to Sheffield's Blood Sport, it's difficult to decide whether I really like them or really don't. Whilst their recordings are a bit scrappy (expect instruments to not always be in-time with each other), their sound is inventive, experimental and daring. The band are probably fully aware that a large proportion of the general public will never be interested in listening to their somewhat obnoxious-sounding songs, yet they go ahead and continue making the music that they want to make regardless. Their sound is a difficult one to pin down, with the three-piece not easily fitting [...]

Lt. Drebin needs distracting this week, as his exterior revenue stream - wads of non-sequential banknotes stuffed into brown envelopes in return for some piffling celeb's private information - has dried up in the wake of some minor newspaper kerfuffle. Fortunately, he can put those niggling thoughts of his impending arrest by his colleagues whilst he listens to this excellent Midweek Mixtape: FIRST! Blood Sport surely take their moniker from the excellent/nonsense Jean-Claude Van Damme movie of the same name. It's fitting in many senses: not that their music is ludicrously [...]

Due to my family-packed summer, and the arrival of the Ack's new baby boy, it's been a while since we've been out to show. But that certainly doesn't mean there haven't been quality shows happening on the regular this summer in Halifax, and this weekend is a prime example. Tonight alone provides you with enough entertainment to last you the whole weekend. The Extremities are doing their hip hop vs jazz thing at the Paragon, with DJ's, MC's and a live band - I pretty much loved The Extremities album , so I imagine [...]

Nova Scotia band Bloodsport are poised to release their debut EP. Goodbye To The Holy Mountain will come out on July 7th. Take a listen to this track and you can see where the Dinosaur Jr comparisons come from:"Swallowing Werewolves (I Heard Mary Timony Used To Live There)"- MP3Not only do the band name drop the former Helium singer on the 4-song set, but they also take a tongue in cheek shot

A first look at the SappyFest 2009 lineup has just been posted at the Sappy Records website and I think I just peed myself a little in excitement. Take a look at it yourself and see if you don't loose a little control: http://sappyrecords.com/SappyF est_09/lineup.html What a collection of bands! I missed the boat on submitting to perform this year, but I'm sure as hell going to try to make it to Sackville anyway this summer, as this lineup looks top notch (with more TBA). Info for purchasing [...]
I like what I'm hearing on Nova Scotia-based Bloodsport 's debut EP Goodbye to the Holy Mountain . A moody, blacker than black dark pop collection of industrial chanties, Goodbye to the Holy Mountain is breathy and angular, somewhere between the fist-pumping anthems of Magazine and the concise shoegaze of Moose. The gloomy yet soaring "Japanese Democracy" offers the type of cinematically subtle melody that remains subtle at first, acting as a type of hummable dirge that offers a revealing reward upon multiple listens (which is truly the most effective method of composing a catchy song). [...]
The probably with listening to indie-rock-punk-garage-pop for the last 30 years as I have is that when you hear cool new music, your ears & brain will tell you that you've heard it before. Which is OK! Bring cool old sounds to new audiences. Music players have been doing that for years. Heck, Guitar Hero has brought 70s classic rock like Nugent, Foghat, Aerosmith and others to a whole new slew of 13 yr old boys (God help us all...). The key thing I try to look for is finding the right twist on a previously made sound to make [...]
