This is indie but also a bit Balearic and definitely political. But set against a jaunty tune. Normally, La Passionara is the track most referenced as Balearic. But I think this track has every much the same claim. The Blow Monkeys formed in 1981 and split in 1990. This single was released in 1989 at the tail end of the Thatcher administration and was a defiant blast against the language of choice. It featured vocals from Sylvia Tella. The Blow Moneys have recently reformed. When you talk about choice As if its something [...]

The Blow Monkeys : You Don't Own Me [ purchase ] It only took Boyhowdy's descriptive phrase: gender-bent folk rock offers just the right tone of righteous, defiant anger to trigger a bunch of entries that I thought would fit in our chain. You see, I collect genderbending songs. Aaaaaaand, I think that's all I'll say about that. ;) Actually , I'm spoiled for choice here. Two runners up were Cam Clarke's Son of a Preacher Man or The Czars Where [...]
In-jokes ahoy - Kim Mazelle was providing backing vocals on Hello, so strictly speaking they could have just waved hello instead of singing it. Mazelle has had a solo career which wouldn't shame anybody, but really her strength has been adding depth and atmosphere to other people's work, either as named collaborator, or small-print lurking back-up person. You just hope getting a mention in the lyrics doesn't mean ten quid off the fee. She even managed to bring a splash of magic to Doctor Robert's post-Blow Monkeys attempts at a solo career: [...]
The Blow Monkeys- "It Doesn't Have To Be That Way" So the other day, I happened to be watching the fourth installment of one the most terrifically horrible movie franchises ever. Police Academy. Somehow it just didn't age well. Surprising, I know. Fortunately, it wasn't a complete waste of my time. As soon as the movie progressed to a montage of Zed frolicking with his love interest in a field ( 3:25 min into this video right here ), I remembered one reason I like this movie. The awesome Uber-80's Blow Monkeys song in the [...]
From the 'Hey, I thought this blog was about VINYL?!' file comes this last retrospective look back at previous posts as we approach 1,000 posts. (Which happens uh, later today...) (First posted Tuesday, August 11, 2009.) Throughout her life, my mom has been a wonderful pianist. Entirely self taught and without the ability to read music, she could listen to most pieces and in moments play it back for you almost verbatim. It's a skill she seemingly had to pick up as her father, a [...]

Two months later and I'm finally getting around to finishing this post. No excuses except enjoying the summer (post on that later, and by later I mean sooner rather than later) and spending less time in front of computers outside of work, hopefully some of you missed me. There are still a few more Pride celebrations in this neck of the woods over the next few weekends including Jersey City and the Bronx (my birthplace for those that are keeping tabs) so I figured it's still okay to continue posting in this direction before moving on to anything else. [...]
Throughout her life, my mom has been a wonderful pianist. Entirely self taught and without the ability to read music, she could listen to most pieces and in moments play it back for you almost verbatim. It's a skill she seemingly had to pick up as her father, a violinist and concert organizer, forestalled my mother's desire to study and participate in the classical ensembles he'd put together each weekend in the family's home in Newark, New Jersey. And my mother never got over it. I think she'd say her father's grand ego and perhaps chauvinism on some [...]

Uh?p Kajagoogoo are reuniting? Say what?p The "goo" are the latest in random 80's bands to reunite very unexpectedly.p Add them to the list, think Spandau Ballet and The Blow Monkeys .p The original line-up is reforming to play a UK tour this Fall.p Peep the dates here .p We did learn one thing from the band's new website however - Duran Duran's Nick Rhodes is responsible for [...]

hi opossums. This is my first post for some time now, as i had to take a holiday from my head to get a new "mind dimension...mind dimension...mind dimension...". I actually wanted to do this post on the day that George Bush left the oval office, so sorry for the delay. Uk popsters The Blow Monkeys released "(Celebrate) the day after you", a great housy pop-song in 1987 as a clear message to the then-Prime-minister of the UK Maggie Thatcher ("the iron lady") to...well...disappear. There are a lot of similarities between Bush and Thatcher, because both politicians led their [...]

it's getting towards the end of the decade again...yikes. i can remember this feeling ten years ago. that 'shit, was that the 90s?' feeling. even though i started the 90s as a child, it seemed like it went too fast. i'm not looking forward to all those shows and compilations to start appearing, showcasing the 00s. anyway, to combat this feeling that time is running away with us, rewind to the early 90s. pretend it was all a dream, like bobby in dallas. and if you're old enough to know what the hell [...]

Blow Monkeys -'Devil's Tavern' (Blow Monkey Music) Eighteen years after they last played together, this year sees the return of The Blow Monkeys. The four members, Neville Henry, Mick Anker, Toney Kiley and their charismatic singer the legendary Dr. Robert are back together and...it's fantastic. With reformation albums (and you can probably ask the Verve about this), there are going to be difficulties, surely? Well, no, not here. Because whatever those flies on the wall witnessed, the end result is fantastic. The band are certainly not retreading old ground, but producing fantatsic songs that genuinely can [...]

Daintees - Roll On Summertime (7" Single, 1982) The Promise - Glasshouse (12" Single, 1985) The Blue Nile - Stay (12" Single, 1984) The Blow Monkeys - Forbidden Fruit (12" Single, 1985) The Damned - Edward The Bear (12" Single, 1985) Yes, Random 80's is back, back, BACK!!!
Yup folks, Dr. Robert, one of the thorns in Margaret Thatcher's side that wasn;t in her cabinet returns! The Blow Monkeys will release The Bullet Train as a first single from their brand new studio album Devil's Tavern , their first LP in 18 years on August 18th. With hits such as 'Digging Your Scene,' one of the first songs about A.I.D.S., It Doesn't Have To Be This Way, and the many anti-Thatcher songs, particularly 'Choice?,' it's a welcome return. According to the press release, ' Devil's Tavern was funded by [...]
