Last Saturday's Times placed Jimmy Carter at a lowly number 32 in their comprehensive list of America's greatest presidents (Honest Abe was Top of the Pops, Dubya tied with Nixon at 37). I've always had a soft spot for Jimmy though admit it might be because I find the phrase "peanut farmer turned president" as amusing as Carter's admission to Playboy that "I have committed adultery in my heart many times" . I'm cautiously optimistic that Barack Obama will win today's election but am worried that [...]

On my recent foray to Austin, I was surplussed many great records that I needed to spend some uninterrupted time with. Two of those records were recently released by Blue Mountain , Midnight in Mississippi and Omnibus - both essential listening, one featuring brand new material, the other polishing up some previous favorites. They were welcomed traveling companions and will be on heavy rotation for some time. I caught up with Laurie Stirratt on tour for our continuing 5 Questions with [...]

Yeahhh big release week. Something like 85 releases. We've been buzzing about The Showdown for a while now, so you should probably check that out. I'm looking forward to Lykke Li 's twee-pop deliciousness and the Fiery Furnaces 2-disc live album. Also, The Toadies are still alive? Someone tell me what that's about. Oh, and that Lee "Scratch" Perry album was produced by Andrew W.K. so it should be... interesting. :: 31Knots , Worried Well (Polyvinyl) [...]

Whether stripped-down so as not to overwhelm the authenticity of the song and singer, or jazzed up to resonate with modern musical sensibilities, it is the passage of familiar song, motif, and situation between audience and performer which makes the "folk" in folk music. Songs about trains are ultimately songs about longing; songs about the road resonate with those who wander and those who long for a change, though in different ways. Such songs play broadly to universal themes, the better to leave room for such connection. In collapsing the participant/observer gap, the songs have [...]
