There were a some missteps along the way which delayed the release of their debut album by a few years. In an interview from earlier this year on Pitchfork , author Ryan Dombal describes L.A. band Warpaint as having "desert dust grooves, breathy, Cat Power -style vocals, and slithering guitar work." That seems match what I hear on Warpaint's debut EP Exquisite Corpse (Manimal Vinyl). For an EP, there are an impressive three songs over six minutes! Guitarist/vocalist Emily Kokal said in the interview, "I like progressive rock like King Crimson and Yes along with electronic music, things that don't have standard pop structures. My mom listened [...]

Life Moves Pretty Fast: John Hughes R.I.P.
John Hughes died of a heart attack today while on a morning walk in Manhattan. He was 59. As someone who grew up in the ''80s, his films are pretty much ingrained in my teenage memories. I've seen Sixteen Candles more times than any other film (probably upwards of 100), and Ferris Bueller's Day Off isn't far behind that. He directed less than you may remember -- though he wrote the scripts for Pretty in Pink and Some Kind of Wonderful, they were both helmed by journeyman Howard Deutch -- and hadn't been [...]

Some Kind of Wonderful Compilation
I've never seen the 80's teen flick Some Kind of Wonderful , one of several John Hughes put together in a very prolific and commercially successful period. But I am a fan of the soundtrack, which features several relatively obscure cuts by cult artists such as Flesh For Lulu , Pete Shelley and Stephen Duffy . I recently bought the original 1987 CD for just a couple of dollars. Here's some highlights: Lick The Tins - Can't Help Falling In Love The Apartments - The Shyest Time [...]

Lollapalooza News//AT&T Blue Room Schedule Unveiled
Earlier today, the kindhearted folks behind AT&T's Blue Room sessions released the performance schedule from this year's Lollapalooza [ link ]. Yes, despite all the controversy surrounding last year's Pearl Jam censorship/"where did Eddie's comments re: Bush go", AT&T Blue Room will again be broadcasting a number of this year's weekends performances live, however, with the exception of Wilco , it appears that none of the biggest names will be participating in the webcast, which can be found here . Anyone caught complaining is a whining effer, as the first day along [...]
