Here's a question. If this series - Music That Made Me - is a nostalgic look back at influences and memories then how long does that song or memory have to exist to say with certainty that it has helped form you as a person and is not just a passing fancy? I think it's when you can delve back, if only for a few months or a year and feel sentimental about something or know that something changed. It's when [...]
So Apple's teasing announcement on Apple.com yesterday was... leading up to an announcement that the Beatles' records will be available for sale on iTunes. The Beatles, Twickenham, Middlesex, 9th April 1969 Ringo Starr has greeted this news with an enthusiastic "I am particularly glad to no longer be asked when the Beatles are coming to [...]

If you're prone to seizures, skip this one. The song doesn't do much for me, or maybe I'm just too focused on the visuals to even let my ears do any work. This video features what Doobybrain calls a "camera shifting" effect, which gives it a 3D look without those goofy red & blue glasses, which seem like they should have become obsolete years ago with the Walkman and Bryan Adams.
As Done Waiting pointed out , Yorkshire-based singer-songwriter Laura Groves is on the SXSW 2010 bill along with a trillion others. In this video, Groves and friend play acoustic guitar and battery-operated keyboard in a mossy wood somewhere in England, I'm guessing. "I Am Leaving" really takes flight, thanks to Groves' powerful, very expressive voice, which seems to reach for the highest notes for emphasis––climactic purposes. Her self-titled debut album came out last July on XL, followed by a December EP, Does Anyone Love Me Now? Buy Blue Roses on [...]
Click here to view the embedded video. MP3 : Doubting Comforts While perusing the SXSW 2010 band list (yet again), I was reminded that Blue Roses will be playing. This is the project of singer/musician Laura Groves from Shipley, Yorkshire whose influences range from Tears For Fears to Debussy. Combining years of practice on the piano and guitar with days of interest on other instruments, she's managed to compose some heartbreakingly darling folk tunes. "I like writing songs for instruments I can't play [...]
Laura Groves is a young singer from the UK performing as Blue Roses . She recorded her self titled debut guerilla style -- using friends' homes, bathrooms and even a prized Steinway in a local shop. Today's Top Tune has a haunting melody, it's a live version of " Doubtful Comforts ."

10. M. Ward - Hold Time The sixth album by Matthew Ward saw him hitting a rich vein of form. It's slick without being overproduced, familiar without outstaying its welcome. It's not bright and shiny and it's definitely not the cool sound of 2009. It's just Ward knocking out some great ...
Welcome to the annual "Top Albums of the Year" list. As I expected, 2009 was an amazing year for music. Putting together this list was much harder than I anticipated. There were so many quality albums that did not make the cut and I'm sure I'll kick myself two months from now for leaving something [...]

Toronto - Best-ofs are hard for me to write. Firstly because I don't regularly acquaint myself with the newest-hottest @#X$ other than what's on Gizmodo, ebaum, and ISI (if you know what the last one is you really know my pain!) Second, the inferiority complex is particularly heightened during the holidays (what not to wear, what not to give as gifts, what not to say during a hotpot dinner with friends so they will not call the police to report an improperly sedated schizophrenic Chinese dude). But in comes the voice of Wade the Eternally Surprised: "write what you know [...]

No, I think this year it's more a case of re-master/re-issue.. yep, I jumped on the bandwagon and rode it for all it was worth. So I'm splitting my Best Of The Year review in two: the new music list will be out early in 2010, but here's the vintage stuff I was happy to discover (and re-discover) in 2009. I've already talked about The Jayhawks' Music From The North Country anthology - unfortunately for my bank balance, there were many more re-issues of an equally good standard. Ah, well.. REM's [...]

Anorak London London trio The High Wire first got onto my radar over a year ago, as we were both headed to New York City for CMJ and while our paths would not cross - I believe their showcases were done before I even arrived - the samples I heard made a truly indelible impression. More than anything, they reminded me of my beloved Mojave 3 in the way they stitched together rootsy song structures with a threads of shimmering dream-pop, and also in the way that Tim Crompton and Canadian ex-pat Alexia [...]

Danny North I had spent the last few days getting contradictory answers as to whether the December 15 Fanfarlo show at the El Mocambo I'd been so looking forward to and the Montreal date the following night were cancelled or not, but yesterday afternoon the band settled the matter - frontman Simon Balthazar's passport was stolen in Portland and there was no getting a replacement in time to make the Canadian dates. They'll surely visit us another time, but not next week. But goodness knows I'm nothing if not [...]

Shipley chantoozy Blue Roses (aka Laura Groves, born not more than 20 miles from where I was, as it happens) writes delightful songs. You know the feeling you get when you're a little kid, and someone gives you a kaleidoscope - you've never seen one before, you point it at a window, put your eye to it and start turning? Ooh.. That's how I feel when I listen to Blue Roses. Head on over to her MySpace page . You'll hear echoes of Bjork, Liz Fraser, Kate Bush.. but mostly you'll hear Laura [...]

DOWNLOAD: Blue Roses - I am Leaving (MP3) DOWNLOAD: Blue Roses - Doubtful Comforts (MP3) Blue Roses , aka UK singer-songwriter Laura Groves, released her self-titled debut album full of beautiful folk songs via XL Recordings in July. A follow up EP called Does Anyone Love Me Now is out digitally on December 7th, and tonight (December 3rd), Laura sets out on what is being called a "rare" tour of North America with fellow [...]

Yorkshire chanteuse Laura Groves, better known as Blue Roses , lilts onto our shores this week to support her new EP "Does Anyone Love Me Now." Her magical voice and delicate arrangements recall the likes of Joanna Newsom and St. Vincent, and fans of haunting bedroom folk won't be disappointed. Blue Roses released her self-titled debut earlier this year on XL Recordings and its intimate yet artfully layered soundscapes mesh perfectly with Groves' perfectly measured vocals. ||| Download: " Doubtful Comforts " and " I Am Leaving " ||| Live: [...]
