Now we are getting into the meat and potatoes of this list. I can honestly say that every song from here down to #1 have been on HEAVY rotation on my iPod over the past 12 months. Let's gooooooo. 40. Those Darlins - Screws Get Loose 39. Blue Skies For Black Hearts - Majoring In The Arts 38. White Denim - Street Joy [...]

I figured with my previous show being devoted to songs that remind me of sleep, this one would be the opposite. After a few bouts of standard indie rock, things got thick and loud. A shout out to my buddy Brett, for tuning in from Sedro-Woolley. Next time I'll have to add Tullycraft to the list in honor of how we met. The show began with a song off one of my desert island top 5 albums, and ended with a track that's nearly thirty years old. [...]

FensePost is excited to debut "Sitting On The Edge" off Blue Skies For Black Hearts ' LP Embracing The Modern Age . The song continues the band's penchant for classic pop sounds backed by glorious pop-rock guitar hooks, loud drums and late 60s to early 70s-style pop vocals filtered through a haze of 90s indie rock. "Sitting On The Edge" features all of these, blending together elements of The Kinks, Phil Spector and Teenage Fanclub into one blissful, fun pop mess. The band is currently [...]

On again Off Again Three Holy-Windstorm-Batman reasons to forget yesterday's ugliness and wander over to the Beat Kitchen tonight... 1. Chicago quartet On Again Off Again just have that something about them. Having grown up quite a bit from its 2008 EP Cycles , On Again Off Again play quirky indie rock with just a hint of pop lingering in the background. The group's 2010 effort (Re)cycles EP, sees the band move away from the subdued, folkier elements of the previous effort and brings [...]

Last week we covered a new track from Portland folk outfit Death Songs called "Wounds" off the new PDX Pop Now! compilation. We talked a little bit about the band and the song, and had a few words to say about the organization as well. That wasn't enough; it's high time I let slip a little something - we here at FensePost have been quiet supporters of the Portland festival. Visit the music room in my house and you'll see several from the compilation [...]
Today is my first Fathers' Day as a father ever, so much love to all my other baby daddies out there. This one's for you! [tweetmeme] Given the volume of music available for consideration on One Track Mind, we invariably have to pass on a lot of tasty morsels. In a desire to share even more great, free music with you, the Sunday Sampler offers a handful of tracks without the usual critical and biographical write-up. Less talk, more tunes. Blue [...]

One of the people I trust the most with pop music recommendations is my buddy Ross of Hop Hop. He's gotten me into a ton of great bands, the latest of which is Blues Skies for Black Hearts. And yeah, we both said the same thing "uh... their name makes them sound like an emo [...]

SKULL TAPE, CUE THE MOON, ARCHER BLACK, AND BLUE SKIES FOR BLACK HEARTS ON SUNDAY APR. 17TH AT THREE CLUBS, 1123 NORTH VINE STREET, HOLLYWOOD. 9:00PM/ $5/ 21+

Portland seems to be known for the down-trodden style of tunes coming out, or something folky, right? Well, I'm excited to bring you a bit something different from the band Blue Skies for Black Hearts, who have a new album called Embracing the Modern Age coming out on April 19th. Listening to the new single "Majoring in the Arts" reminds me a lot of classic power-pop, except this time it's the decaf version, which is really what grabbed me. Sometimes you like to sit back, take the groove [...]

I recently discovered that Portland's Blue Skies For Black Hearts are a vital beat-tastic antidote for the dreary winter blahs. With their new full-length Embracing the Modern Age these raucous, hook-driven, Dave Clark Five brethren have co-opted the sheer pop exuberance of the 60's and supplemented it with a modern, razor-sharp re-up. The first single Majoring in the Arts is a swinging goldmine of good-time rock n'roll, complete with an exuberant shout-along chorus that will no doubt become a welcome earwig for days. Other pop nuggets on [...]

There's a lot going on with Blue Skies For Black Hearts, one of my favorite old school guitar rock groups in town. First, the band just finished a brand new record, set for release sometime in the next year. Along with the record, Blue Skies laid down a bunch of fun cover songs, including a rawkus version of the Standells' classic hit "Dirty Water" featuring Dave Berkham of the Midnight Callers on the harmonic solo and gang backup vocals from members of Blue Horns, Welcome Home Walker, Go Fever, Midnight Callers, and Fast Computers. Gnarly. Download [...]

Merry Christmas, friends. We here at Citizen Dick really and truly appreciate your continued support and loyal readership, and after all, what's more supportive and loyal than tuning in on Christmas day to see what the final track for our 12 Days of Holiday Dick series is going to be. Well, this one is a treat. Putting this series together, I listened to a few dozen different indie rock holiday songs and of all of them, this one by Portland's Blue Skies for Black Hearts was my favorite. Off the XO holiday sampler like [...]

The shops may think that Christmas starts in mid October, but we all know that in reality you should only start preparing on 1st December with that first choccy in the advent calendar. So as a way of starting off the musical advent (and I'm in no way religious, but enjoy a reason for a gluttonous festival as much as the next man), we have a little Christmas/winter indie mixtape from the kind folk over at XO Publicity . A little change from the Slade/Wham/East 17 that you"re all hearing elsewhere. We've always done a [...]
Today's free and legal mp3 downloads: XO Publicity has put together a free and legal album of holiday music, XO for the Holidays: Volume II . Since today marks the unofficial opening of the Christmas and Hannukah season in the US (and since my wife will finally consent to holiday music being played in the house), I thought it a good day to share some festive music. The October edition of THE RUMBLE: PORTLAND @ Holocene is one for the ages, and all ages, spanning genres and era's. Headlining the Rumble will be BLUE SKIES FOR BLACK HEARTS, the Portland band that sounds like they broke out of Nuggets-era British Invasion rock. Jangly, jingly, great pop rock and roll. Coming up from Los Angeles is the mighty FITZ & THE TANTRUMS , a band you've been hearing on [...]
