Given the decent amount of high scores we've given over the past six months, it should go without saying that 2012 has been a solid year so far for music. And today, we're highlighting our 15 favorite albums of the first half of the year. It's a list that was a lot more difficult to assemble than we originally thought and we had to leave some damn-good projects off. Those include the latest releases from THEESatisfaction, Gangrene, Big Baby Gandhi, Fiona Apple, House Shoes, RYAT, Oh No, and Burial, just to name a few. But we're confident that the 15 [...]

Meant to post this when it came out but then I didn't because I'm a terrible blogger and sometimes don't "wipe" "properly." I described Nacho Picasso to someone as "If Tyga had skill and was gothic." Maybe that's apt... Everything about his whole album is great from the " atmospheric trap-cum-cloud rap instrumentals " that Blue Sky Black Death provides to the wordplay and mood cultivated. BSBD and NP are the Max Payne version of Chiddy Bang. Do yourself a favor and give this a spin then go back and check out Nacho's past albums , which are [...]
Ace West Coast production duo Blue Sky Black Death , mere days after dropping another stellar collab with Seattle MC Nacho Picasso , are back with Third Party Instrumentals , an all-instrumental version of their 2010 LP Third Party . The original version of Third Party was a bit of departure for BSBD’s Young God and Kingston, as it relied heavily on vocal arrangements and hooks, taking the emphasis on the texturally rich, bass and synth heavy production that’s ordinarily their bread and butter, but as the instrumental [...]

Blue Sky Black Death & Nacho Picasso - Exalted Self-released: 2012 Be it food, art, or even someone's personality, the best things in life tend to have layers. And that's exactly what makes Nacho Picasso and Blue Sky Black Death's third full-length album, Exalted , an overwhelming success. Whereas preceding albums For The Glory and Lord of the Fly brought a high level of gothic cerebral boom-bap, Exalted expands on their blueprint and displays a team truly at the top of their respective game. [...]

When the current crop of innovative producers gets discussed, the name "Blue Sky Black Death" doesn't seem to get tossed around as much as it should. With a catalogue full of moody, atmospheric bangers spread across stellar LPs like 20082s Slow Burning Lights and 20112s fittingly cinematic Noir , BSBD's built a stylistic footprint that warrants keeping tabs on the group whenever they drop a project. If you're into music they self-describe on Bandcamp as "glacial" and "gothic thuggery." Exalted , the duo's third full length collaboration with Seattle [...]

I'm having trouble thinking of a rapper who's emerged in the past year's time and captivated me as much as Seattle's Nacho Picasso . Dude is a straight-up comedian with the bars, something that makes him both sharper than a motherfucking tack and entertaining for days. He's not just hilarious, though; he can really make you think with some of his wordplay. That makes for one hell of a replay value, which only gets increased thanks to the production from Blue Sky Black Death and Raised By Wolves. They're behind Picasso's latest opus, [...]

The first rapper who showed up twice in our Mixtape Of The Week column was Seattle's Nacho Picasso, who teamed up with the hometown production crew Blue Sky Black Death on For The Glory and Lord Of The Fly . The combination of Nacho's nasally grimy death-obsessed stoner-talk and BSBD's headblown synthscapes is a potent one indeed, and so it's good news for everyone that they've gone back to the well again. Today, they came out with their third collaborative full-length. This one is called Exalted [...]

Blue Sky Black Death. The name may sound dark (or emo) to some, but for your own sake don't judge too quickly. Made up of producers Kingston and Young God, this duo has been spitting out hip-hop instrumentals since 2003. In 2011, BSBD released "NOIR," which, after months of debate and inner turmoil, I have decided is the best album of 2011. BEST you say? YES. From beginning to end your ears are graced with everything from southern guitar solos to choir samples, all paired with clean, familiar hip-hop style beats. Not enough people know about BSBD, but their production [...]
Nacho Picasso and Blue Sky Black Death have hit the ground running since the release of their second collaborative project, Lord of the Fly . After releasing their video for the banger " Rammin ", the squad have teamed up with They Shootin' to hit their fans once again with another set of visuals for album cut "Staring at the Sun". Nacho and BSBD keep things trippy, as usual, employing funky filters to accompany their dripping music. Lord of the Fly is out now.

Nacho Picasso is a nut, we already knew that. Spitting rhymes like "I'm like the statue of David except I'm more endowed" over a slimy Blue Sky Black Death production, it is pretty safe to say hip-hop has never seen anything like this. Matching it up with some purple drank visuals, what we have here is yet another reason to listen to the Lord of the Fly standout track, "Rammin'".

Friday, February 24, 2012 I'm Leah Manners, known as Miss Manners when I host KOOP 91.7FM's Hip Hop Hooray on Sunday's from 2-3PM. A few years ago I was privileged enough to write on a regular basis for SOTO, but a busy schedule hindered me being able to keep that up. Fortunately, John has cordially offered me the opportunity to send over a monthly mix of whatever I'm spinning/interested in. This will likely be mostly hip-hop, but one never knows when I'll stray and bring [...]
