It has been a busy few weeks for the Me and the Machine folks. Nathan Griffin and Adam Burrows each played Nashville's legendary Bluebird Cafe in the past week. Here is a video from each performance:

Robert Randolph and the Family Band - Nobody The 13-string steel pedal guitar phenom Robert Randolph can flat out play. Randolph was trained as a pedal steel guitarist in the House of God Church as a child, and his dynamic instrument is front and center in all the band's music. Think Duane Allman meets Muddy Waters and B.B. King . I've been fortunate enough to see Robert Randolph on a number of occasions and in all different settings - most recently Saturday night at the Bluebird Theater in Denver. Randolph is [...]
This weekend was absolutely wild in Denver: three shows, four days, lots of fun! On Thursday night, after an overabundance of ill-fitting opening acts, Joker finally made his appearance on stage to a jacked up crowd of just around 300 (capacity is 500). This might seem like a small attendance rate, but we made it [...]

Sampler by giantpandadub I hit you guys with a little blurb last week about Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad , or GPGDS if you're lazy. The New York quintet (that means 5) just launched a massive cross-country tour, a co-bill with Hawaii's The Green . Tour dates for the co-bill tour can be found here . I was able to check out a show this past Saturday night at the Bluebird Theater in Denver, CO. The Green is exactly who you'd think they are: a [...]

A few months ago, we introduced you to The Parallax View at a time when Tyler Koykas' musical project was new to the world. Since signing with the Woozy Tribe, TPV has released a number of EPs, all of which show a constant progression in his creation and assemblage of unique sounds. The Parallax View comes up with a concept, idea, or feeling for a release by making some art. When I last spoke with TPV, he felt that "a lot of people use photos as covers, [which are] pretty plain and [...]

The first talking point you'll usually hear about NY's Ollabelle is that they feature the voice of Amy Helm, daughter of the incomparable Levon Helm, drummer, vocalist, and mandolinist for The Band . Several of Ollabelle's members perform in the Levon Helm Band, alongside Larry Campbell , at Levon's weekly Midnight Rambles at his barn/studio in Woodstock. Ollabelle played a large part in Levon's two comeback albums, Dirt Farmer and Electric Dirt , and they also backed Jim White on his 2008 album Transnormal Skiperoo . [...]

Half of an item has been crossed off of my bucket-list. I'm a monstrous New Order/Joy Division fan, and being able to catch Hooky on the small stage at the crowded Bluebird Theater backed up by a more than capable quartet, the Light, performing "Unknown Pleasures" with a few other nuggets was a tad surreal. Hook channeled his inner Ian Curtis and was able to nail some of those baritone notes in Mancunian glory. Peter danced away his early jitters and settled in by the second track shuffling his way from side to side with his trademark bass [...]

Perception and reputation are 9/10th of the law in the music biz. Even on the tertiary level where I roam. If this song was from any other artist I may have passed on it. I may not have given it a chance to develop. But since the band in question is Amy Helm's NYC roots supergroup Ollabelle I gave it a chance and another and another. I'm still a little torn as the song's style, lyrical theme, and Amy's breathy vocals are not my favorites. But the groove is hard to resist. [...]
Simon Russell Beale stars in a small show in an even smaller theater: today's review is of Bluebird, which is at the subterranean Atlantic Theatre 2. For fans of Mr. Beale only. http://rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ ping

Ollabelle is a New York based folk music group named after the influential Appalachian songwriter Ola Belle Reed. The group is composed of five singing multi-instrumentalists hailing from disparate parts of the United States, Canada and Australia. Three albums in, the quintet is flirting with contemporary sounds, but its gospel roots stay strong. Hear Ollabelle's latest, Neon Blue Bird, in its entirety. Ollabelle's new album, Neon Blue Bird, comes out August 16. Read more »
Ollabelle - It's been five eventful years for this rarified, acoustic roots/Americana band since 2006's Riverside Battle Song , a period of personal change, side projects and beginning a fresh DIY, label-less existence...new self-produced indie project includes five original tracks, two traditional songs arranged by the band, plus covers of Paul Kelly, Taj Mahal, Chris Whitley and an Ollabelle take on Stephen Foster's "Swanee River" // Release : Neon Blue Bird (August 16) // Sounds like : gospel, blues, country and folk seamlessly merge in graceful harmony throughout an album that [...]

Long time no see! I needed a few days away from blogging last week to get caught up on real-life concerns, but I'm back with a pack of freshly charged batteries and ready to kick the QBiM summer season into high gear. To do that, I thought I would formally introduce you to an artist I posted about on the (you've ' QBiM Facebook pageLiked ' it already haven't you?) last week: Armen at the Bazaar . Our boy Armen Bazarian is originally from Toronto and is making his home [...]

Corner Time, Volume One, Part Two remembering, seattle, wa; date forgotten I am certain all manner of things I thought I had forgotten will now come up through my skin, leak out from my eyes, coat my mouth. The ache of loss is tempered by time. Now it is a dull ache, but it stays with me, like the smell of home and the sticky sweet taste of memory. Download [...]

Bluebird Theater | Denver, Colorado | 27 May 2011 | Full Set I don't think I'll ever forget the first time I saw Sarah Jaffe play in Denver. I was head-over-heels for her album, Suburban Nature , and was incredibly excited to hear her perform. Apparently the crowd at the Hi-Dive that night didn't feel the same way. Poor Sarah struggled to play over the talking and bar noises to an unreceptive audience. Let me make it clear that I don't think Sarah did anything wrong- the [...]

Last night's Foster the People and the Chain Gang of 1974 show at the Bluebird resonated with me on different levels. The Chain Gang of 1974 is all grown up and the release of "Wayward Fire" out June 21st (buy here ) will be heard by many and will find that the void left by LCD Soundsystem will eventually be filled (more on this later). Foster the People are fueling the fire created by their impressive S/T EP, leading to their full length, "Torches" released last month (buy here ). The [...]
