(Please watch the video above before reading) It was really quite something. To be able to walk around Central Park, and allow your experience to be soundtracked based on your location. Beautiful strings washed over you near the tall trees and luxurious apartment views by The Lake. You could hear boat [...]
"I remember finding this painting that a relative of mine did of the park. A relative I had never met. And I remember thinking, we're essentially doing the same thing. That's what he made. That is what he saw was beautiful and was inspired to create, pulling inspiration from the same place... I hope what [...]

DC stalwarts Modern Man are preparing to release their debut EP Long In The Tooth this week via Longtooth Records. The EP was recorded and produced by the band themselves in conjunction with studio wiz Hays Holladay, who is currently 1/2 of BLUEBRAIN and formerly 1/3 of The (amazing) Epochs. Modern Man has a headlining show at Black Cat to coincide with the release this Friday, August 26th with Harper Blynn and The Dustys. We've got "19573, a rock anthem off of the [...]
Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive bluebrainmusic.blogspot.com Listening to the D.C.-based duo Bluebrain , it should come as no surprise that the band is big on high-concept presentations for their art. The brothers behind the music, Ryan and Hays Holladay, combine their efforts to craft intricate pop woven with dense electronic backdrops, rippling drums and sharp contrasts of electric and acoustic guitar. It is a sound that practically demands a similarly lofty presentation to [...]

Bluebrain are a Washington, DC-based duo that's done some incredibly inventive site-specific music in the past, including this beautiful mobile app-based album that's meant to be played while perusing the city's National Mall. This past Record Store Day, the duo teamed with DC label Sockets Records for another creative endeavor: a 7" that features an A, B, and C-side. What that means is you can play the A-side, "The Pull," the B-side, "The Push," and then play the two sides simultaneously to create the C-side. I don't know about you, but I want one [...]
The National Mall by BLUEBRAIN. The First Location-Aware Album from BLUEBRAIN on Vimeo. [ via bluebra.in ] Whatever you call it, Bluebrain's 'The National Mall' is the first of its kind: A location-aware album, available only as a mobile app. Designed to play exclusively withing the physical boundaries of the national mall in Washington D.C., this is a sonic 'choose your own adventure'; an album that doesn't progress in a linear manner but, rather, evolves based on the user's chosen walking path and pace, utilizing [...]
So did any of you DC Newdusters run out and grab Bluebrain's limited edition 73 on Record Store Day? I may never hear the sweet sounds of that "C-side," but I found this really sweet video that'll have to do for now. Here's Bluebrain's "Funny Business" off their debut LP Soft Power.

Let's face it: Washington is better known for its monuments and political snafus than its happening music scene. Obama must have put something in the water, though, because recently D.C.-based music duo Bluebrain has lent the District some clout as a hub of aural innovation. This month, Bluebrain has not only announced the upcoming release of a site-specific album , they have also collaborated with Sockets Records to create something the likes of which not even the hippest city has seen: a vinyl with a "C side." [...]
On Saturday April 16th, as part of Record Store Day, Sockets Records will release Bluebrain's single 'The Pull' as a limited edition hand-numbered seven inch vinyl, available exclusively in DC Record Stores via Sockets Records. The two songs can also be played SIMULTANEOUSLY using two copies of the record to create something new. (C [...]

A Brief Concert from BLUEBRAIN on Vimeo. I wanted to do a quick post on one of my favorite up and coming DC acts, Bluebrain. The electronic duo have been very prolific over the past few months. With the release of their LP Soft Power has come one interesting performance after another. This ranges from organizing events [...]

The Local Natives have continued their upwards trajectory. As predicted , they made their late night debut a few weeks ago on Craig Ferguson They've shot a few Take Aways for La blogotheque , become one of the busiest touring acts across North America and Europe playing some of the best venues with some of the biggest acts around. They continue to surprise, inspire and awe. Not bad for a band that we did one of our first No More Strangers / WC 1 Year Birthday Party with at Funky [...]

At the beginning of the year we spoke with Ryan Holladay of Bluebrain about his favorite tracks from their Soft Power LP. We also noted the band's penchant for boombox events involving the DC community, like the recent "Boombox Walk" during the Cherry Blossom Festival. Now, the duo is back with another interesting, DC-related side project. We'll let Ryan explain that one: "Essentially we (Bluebrain) have created an audio companion to the Sant Ocean Hall in the Smithsonian's Natural History Museum. It's a twenty minute piece of music that we've written to be played [...]

Bluebrain (who you may formerly as The Epochs ) have yet another new video to offer up. "Ten by Ten" is animated affair that you can check out above. We've posted it above!

Bluebrain - Soft Power This Bluebrain's song takes a second to kick in, it has such unique production, vocals remind me a bit of TV On The Radio and the music makes me feel like how I felt after hearing The Dirty Projectors for the first time which they don't sound the same at all but both album hit me off guard where the music wasn't something i'd usually listen to but composition wise it was very fresh feeling and I wanted know if they could pull that feeling [...]

Photo borrowed from Claudia Kay Photography Apparently I should dedicate this mix to Brooklyn. Eight out of ten songs has something to do with this petri dish for indie music. My apologies for a couple of harsh transitions this week. I just had to put these three songs in the front because I think they are all really good and then I ended up with some things tacked on the end because I wasn't sure where to put them. That doesn't make them any less great. [...]

This week Drake sees if Yeasayer can avoid the dreaded sophomore slump and if Hot Chip can "crack it wide open" on their fourth full length. - ed. Drake's Take: New Releases 02.09.10 February can be the cruelest of months, even with its brevity. One week you'd swear it was Spring, the next week, you're spitting icicles. The release schedule kind of feels like that as well. To wit, we're (mostly) blessed this week with new releases from Hot Chip, Yeasayer and the influential Gil [...]
