[Happy birthday to Jason LaRocca of the local punk outfit the Briggs . Here's where to rock out tonight:] Busy, busy night, from the big spaces to the big rooms and on down. That highly anticipated Nine Inch Nails / Jane's Addiction tour hits the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, and also under the evening skies is the second night of the Allman / Doobie brothers at the Greek Theatre. ... My favorites for the evening: M83 and James Yuill visit the Glass [...]

DJ Shadow's replacement in UNKLE + a former member of stoner rockers The Earthlings = We Fell To Earth. Moody, guitar-synth rock that Portishead fans will likely enjoy. We Fell To Earth - "Lights Out" BM LINX are 3-piece live band form NY, mixing beats + riffs & synthesizers. Their new album is being released on Craze Factory records, mixed by Alan Moulder (Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails.) They just received a 4-star review [...]
New York electronic rock & roll band BM LINX is equally balanced in rock & roll as it is in electronic. The way they blend blend the two together is almost seamless. Their latest LP, Black Entertainment , starts off with a bang and by the end the energy slows down and relaxes you - much like a high intense workout. In support of the CD release, BM LINX is playing a number of East Coast shows followed by performances at the 2009 SXSW music festival. The Outlaw Jimmy Rose [...]

Not much to say about this week's edition of our Friday Mixtape other than it's really, really good. I mean, sure we say that every week, but this time, we really mean it. After all, included in the 35+ tracks below, you'll find a mix of the week's best new singles, covers, and remixes along with mp3s from a few up-and-comers you might just want to check out. -Crystal Antlers at Continental Army Plaza, Brooklyn I started off Wednesday with a non-CMJ show, part of Todd P 's week of free shows at the Continental Army Plaza in Williamsburg. Yes it was outside. Yes it was cold. But that didn't seem to put a damper on Crystal Antlers ' ferocious performance. These guys are a loud and gritty, somewhat oversexed, desert rock band from Long Beach CA, whose music may have felt more at home in the grunge era. They sounded really great outside, with the J [...]
Or call it "emptying the mailbox" if you like. Reading/working/deleting my way through numerous promo messages seems to be a permanent occupation and the mountain I'm currently facing is build by 1,681 mails of which 383 are unread. In all naivety my hopes are that among this insane number of mails are something worth wasting a few of our precious minutes on. So time to put on the working gloves, a.k.a. my headphones and start listening! Will comment every song I listen to and post the best (better) ones. Broken Machine by [...]

Well, my guilt at disappearing for so long came to a head today and I'm back! I was inexplicably social and busy job hunting for a couple of weeks there and then took a week to decompress. One of the things I did in the weeks I was absent was attend the first night of the Pitchfork Music Festival with my best pals Ryan and Lisa. Good times, if you ignore the fact that the sound was way too quiet for a Sonic Youth show. Or any other show for that matter, really. Whatevs. [...]

BM Linx sound like a Sunday afternoon with a hangover and some chick's phone number stuffed in the front pocket of your jeans. The NYC trio try to kick some pretty slick electro beats, on their debut album, "The Portable Genius", if only it had come out a few years ago. if would have been released in 2001 it might have made a bigger splash, it might have been up there with !!! or VHS or Beta or The Rapture. Most of the tracks, however, are bland, forgettable affairs - it's like paint-by-numbers dance rock. This song is [...]

I could wait until tomorrow to do this, but I'm not sure if I'll have a load of time. Here are all the free mp3s that were sent to me this week that I just didn't get through or have already been covered extensively on the blogs. Feel free to enjoy/recommend/filter on your own. I am loving this new Wilco album, but it's been covered a ton on the internerd...from Sky Blue Sky : Wilco - What Light [...]

BM LINX may have been around for only a year now (and barely a year at that), but you would never know that if you hadn't been told. The band already has a self-released album under their sleeves, The Portable Genius , and, unlike most bands who have been around for such a short amount of time, their songs are very "together." Like many other burgeoning New York City bands trying to burst out of that scene and onto the national spotlight, BM LINX plays a brand of electro-tinged danceable rock that reminds me [...]
We've got a treasure trove of sweet downloads this month, so many in fact, that you may notice there are fourteen listed below...rendering our "Bakers Dozen" title ridiculous this month.
