Dope Chef is a street concept best known for their clothing line which is FTD and they've come together with Mikill Pane to create an amalgamation of their two signature clothing designs. It's pretty sick; I've gone and pre-ordered a sweat. Can go and jam with Mikill Pane and Dope Chef founder Brian Gathi on the 11th of this month; peep the link I dropped in the article [...]

The highly talented and creative Japanese born vocalist/(Dada) visual artist, Yamatsuka Eye , is down for the Sugar Mountain Festival in Melbourne and also for this years Sydney Festival . He is most known for founding the experimental rock band Boredoms in early 1986, a progression from noise band Hanatarash created by Eye, Zeni Geva and Mitsuru Tabata in 1984. Apart from Boredoms and Hanatarash, Eye has many alias and has used numerous other pseudonyms. Eye is a member of UFO or Die, Puzzle Punks, Noise Ramones and Destroy 2. Eye has also made [...]

I waited till 2011 to finalize my albums list - all my lists - partially due to laziness, being busy, the holidays... but mainly because I'm not sure what the hurry is. I don't do this for the web traffic (clearly), so I gave myself a little more time to decide than usual. (And as long as this goes up before the Village Voice' s Pazz n' Jop, I don't feel delinquent.) So here's my list, the top five or so have been a lock for almost half a year, but the rest were in flux right till I [...]

I took a year off from doing a favorite Seattle records list due to lazyitis (sorry Seattle). Here's my top ten records from my fair city for 2011 (sorry Seattle). 1. Seapony - Go With Me ( Hardly Art ) Twee is alive and well in Seattle. Seapony kind of came out of nowhere late last year. They put their debut album out on local label Hardly Art, played countless shows around town and generally put the Northwest back on the map when [...]

The 7-inch single has been around since 1949. That's 62 years and counting! In my humble opinion the 7-inch single is still the essence, pinnacle and acme of pop perfection. Optimally, it's one song, one side (Some try to squeeze on more). That's no room for screwing up. You always hear that releasing a 7-inch is a money losing proposition, but that thankfully, doesn't keep pop geeks from doing it. In honor of true blue pop geek vinyl junkies out there, here is the second installment of the annual Finest Kiss top 40 7-inch singles countdown. [...]
2011 was (another) odd year for music. It felt like the average quality of albums was raised a bit, but nothing really stood out as a life-changing album or single of the year. Still, there was a lot of great music to be heard. Here's fifty of my favorite tracks from the year, ranging from [...]
You'll never be able to listen to Pull Harder on the Strings of Your Martyr again without thinking, "BOAT! RUDDER!!" Sorry, Trivium.

New York is a talented state when it comes to music, especially Brooklyn. The mix of genres and styles that come from that area is wild. Once again, we have another young band creating some serious noise. Farewell Republic is preparing to release their LP Burn the Boats on January 1, 2012 and until then you can listen to the single "Wake," "Gliss," and a b-side for the Wake 7". The mix between punk and pop has this cinematic feel as each track progresses. The opening track and single "Wake" drew me in with the [...]

TORO Y MOI, UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA, BASS DRUM OF DEATH ( Branx , 320 SE 2nd) Chaz Bundick is a puppetmaster of a huge range of dancing, bouncing sounds. You know him better as Toro y Moi, your one-stop shop for future jamz and retro '80s synths, all squelching along for a funky, freaky dance party. Don't miss Unknown Mortal Orchestra, with tightly coiled funk-psych and a flamboyant live show (guitar heroics! Capes, sometimes!) that you don't want to miss. NED LANNAMANN [...]

Shredded bee-buzz guitars sawing between two chords is how Farewell Republic introduces "Wake" – the lead song off of their impending album "Burn the Boats." The blended mixture of fluid drumming and layered guitars points to My Bloody Valentine as spiritual ancestors. The vocals come off a bit clearer than in Mr. Shield band's celebrated records - but there are similarities too: for instance the way background voices blur into icy guitar textures. A clever inclusion of backward-tape-looping tacked on the end suggests there may be more studio manipulation to this than initially realized. "Gliss" opens with [...]

Tweet Yay! Hooray for ye olde indie fare. This is obvious stuff from D. Crane (based in Seattle, hmm, what happened to Niles) and his band but that doesn't stuff us from grooving like a eight legged groove machine when its in earview. And for all that it is taken from an album called 'Let's Drag Our Feet', try following that advice and watch your shiny polished foot apparel turn a definite shade of scuff. Just made for Friday nights where ties [...]
