Ahhh yes the extraordinary oddball indie-rock band BOAT from Seattle, Washington has a new album, Let's Drag Our Feet ( Magic Marker Records ). A 14 track album filled with music that is energetic, original and fun-tastic. They have a handful of summer shows lined up, check their myspace for more info. I hope everyone had a lovely Mother's Day yesterday, I took my mom to see The Hoax , it was entertaining, pretty good and funny. I also finally designed a new header that I'm actually [...]

the earlies - i must have been blind (mp3) the boats - sarah alice (mp3) sifting through the beef blog archives i noticed scholes' two home town sounds posts and i thought i'd chip in (i know, not like me to share an opinion). i was all ready to pick some slightly more pastoral gems from my adopted home town of the last six years but then thought sod it; i'll leave the 'manchester musical heritage (tm)' rant for another post and see what treasures i [...]
(Editor's note - a quick update from The Faintest Ideas. They play tomorrow, here's the info: Friday, March 16 11:00 p.m. The Parish II (214 E 6th St) ) "This is Martin from (Gothenberg's) The Faintest Ideas writing to give you a quick update from my perspective on a really weird festival, which is even weirder as I'm hallucinating from the fever I managed to get as soon as we landed... At least I managed to go into town for [...]
Here's some tempting news from Three Imaginary Girls , and since I'm reasonably close, I'm quite tempted to go. They even threw in some free mp3s I'm passing along to you, so maybe we're all happy. Here's part of their email message. Three Imaginary Girls is pleased as punch to announce our first-ever showcase at SXSW in Austin, Texas, with co-sponsors Magic Marker Records, Music Nation, and KOOP 91.7FM. The event will take place at Lovejoy's in downtown Austin on Thursday, March 15, 2007, from 12-6p. The show is free to [...]

Borat! He is the image for this post because, well, look at him. He is quite the beacon for excitement! Anyhoo, you've seen this sort of post format on many blogs, surely, just a big mess of songs. All the bands that you have to listen to to fulfill a position as a mugger (my term for music blogger), you will not like them all. However, even if I end up not liking the band, there are many instances where they only have one song that I like, or at least they only offer up one song that I like [...]
I love making lists (sadly), but this would have taken me forever if it had been the theme a couple of weeks ago. Luckily, this post is now fairly easy for me, as I've already spent WAY too much time putting together a best of 2006 list for my music blog...so I'm merely taking some of the best songs from that post and putting them up here as well, so more people can enjoy them! :) (All of these mp3s are freely and legally available through official sites, [...]

Sorry, I have been a bit busy, I apologize for the delay. I decided to edit the title a bit here because the "Leftover" was causing some confusion... These song picks are some of my favorite songs of the year from bands who were not present on either my Album or EP lists, the following list is my top 20 song picks: Enjoy and Happy Holidays! I Don't Mind Trespassers William , Having [ Get it ] The Dead Tree [...]

The blog Vague Space dot net has posted a whole bunch of alternate versions of songs by a smattering of indie rock-type bands... here . As rock geek, the idea of alternate versions is a topic close to my heart. (Quick Aside: This should totally be the theme of an upcoming Contrast Podcast .) Tracks posted: Broken Social Scene - "Lover's Spit (alternate version)" Tapes 'n Tapes [...]

I'll get the overly obvious name-dropping out of the way first. Godspeed, Do Make Say Think, The Dirty Three. I'll also dispense with instrumental, postrock, Constellation. All crossed my mind when listening to The Boats. When I first heard the lead track off The Boats' debut EP I was reminded of the New Orleans jazz funeral sound created by Radiohead on 'Life In a Glasshouse.' The Perennial Love EP doesn't really fit into the postrock sound (is postrock a term even used thee days?) in the sense that The Boats' music doesn't build to [...]
Chad VanGaalen is a songwriter of the prolific variety. He's not quite at Ryan Adams' level of output, but the man writes songs like it's his only mission in life. Legend has it, he had literally hundreds of songs to work with when putting together his latest outing, Skelliconnection. Unlike Ryan Adams, he knows better not to release everything he writes. Chad VanGaalen - Graveyard.mp3 "Disciples of California" is the title track off of the bands fifth full length release due [...]
The Boats are an experimental indie rock band from Melbourne, Australia. The story of the band is following …a jam on a cool autumn night in May 2003, between two old friends and two prospective drummers. Paul Guseli [ Front of Van] turned up in his xf panel van, head-shaved and stocked with beer and lovely vintage drums, not to mention the knack for telling a good story or two! Less than 15 minutes into the jam, Jona Byron [ The Dirty Royals, The Waiting Place ] and Nick Conolly [ Miasma, The Daze, Royalchord, The Waiting [...]
NYC readers who like folk and free should check out antifolk superstar Jeffrey Lewis tonight at Other Music. Lewis' new album City Eastern Songs is out tomorrow on Rough Trade, but in the meantime check out his much-downloaded tale of neurotic hipsterdom, "Williamsburg Will Oldham Horror". Summing up what has happened today: We had brunch at our favorite café this morning I bought a few CD's (6 to be accurate) at my favorite music store . We went for a nice afternoon stroll at the local castle . We watched the first episode of Matador on TV. I know it's a rerun (probably for the billionth time), but still worth watching. [...]

Boat is a Seattle-based "sloppy/poppy" band that veers toward Pavement at some moments and a long lost Elephant 6 band at others. Either way, they make the kind of music that gets stuck in your head for days on end. Definitely one of my favorite local discoveries this year. Boat - "Last Cans of Paint": mp3 Making the kind of music that any respectable late 60s Kinks fan would love - though they aren't afraid to [...]

mp3: Holding all the Globes mp3: Lanterns and Laughing Ladies Dear BOAT, Did you hear about Rob breaking up with Death Cab for Cutie??? OMG!!!! I know!!! Like, I knew something was up a few months ago when they released that last album, it was really lame and they were all marching it around like it was the greatest thing ever and they were all acting like they were better than everyone. Dude, Death Cab totally dissed Rob and started [...]

Seattle, WA BOAT is amazing. Amazing! Just throw in a damn glockenspiel throughout your album, and you have me hooked! Alright… it takes a little more than that, but I do love the bells. This band is so fun and rhythmic. A lot of their debut disc, Songs That You Might Not Like , reminds me of Spencer Krug bands like Wolf Parade or Sunset Rubdown . "Last Cans Of Paint" [...]
