I've been back in my stuffy, overheated apartment for a few days now, and I've been catching up on a lot of record listening. I find it's best to listen to records when I'm alone because no one can hear the soft, pleasurable moans I emit when the sound of my Rega stylus retracing the grooves of some sweet, sweet vinyl records floods my ears. I think somewhere in my father's house there exists a drawing (done by the Harvey Pekar of his generation, Z) of me masturbating furiously to to (presumably) my record collection. Maybe Z could simply no [...]
The other day I began to describe the origins of the Sunday Mix Tape feature. Today, I'll describe the end of an era. The second fifty mix tapes, which commenced on January 28th, 2007, saw an increased amount of attention paid to marginalized artists. It was almost as if the first few dozen installments were my way of convincing people to come along for the ride, and the second fifty mix tapes were my way of introducing people to the really good shit. "The Pacific Northwest is a dark, dank place, with a suicide rate higher than Keith Richards on a four day binge. Even their most articulate native son, Kurt Cobain, drowned in the sea of despair and offed himself. And what's the cause of this environmental depression??? It may be the constant grey skies and rain, it may be the extremely high runaway and homeless rate or it just may very well be the music of Bob Desper. Bob recorded his New Sounds LP in one take at the local Rose City Sound studios. Just him, his acoustic guitar [...]
Today was quite pleasant, thanks for asking! My early afternoon was spent with Fawn and Brian checking out a community garden where they want to buy a small plot to grow their own herbs and vegetables. We talked to a guy named Dana who maintains two plots filled with cacti, and he showed us around the grounds. Apparently at the top of the hill a beekeeper keeps several colonies of bees to harvest their honey. I was mortified, to say the least. I saw two frames from a short distance and refused to get any closer than that. I don't [...]
