Swim Deep - "The Sea" / "King City" Because: Grunge Pop isn't really a thing, but Swim Deep come close, and their songs make you feel just a little like Aquaman/Namor and a lot like a secret hipster. Houses - "The Beauty Surrounds" Because: I have no idea what those young folks are doing [...]

2012 was an odd year for me musically, and I largely blame Spotify. The only physical musical media I buy these days is the LP, and I really only do that to help touring bands that I like and to buy reissues of my favorite albums. I still buy a lot of digital-only releases too, but when it comes to actually listening to music, I tend to rely mainly on Spotify. (Or a few specific radio shows .) Especially at work. And that's a problem, at least in terms [...]

Yes, that's right dear reader: such was the overwhelming amount of top music this year we've given our end-of-year list a dose of max enlargement pills and extended it to a mighty top twenty. Those that didn't make this engorged run-down and hence reside in our honourable bubbling under category include: Swans – The Seer ; Toy – Toy ; Monolake - Ghosts ; White Manna - White Manna ; Easter - Innocence Man ; Bass Clef - Reeling Skullways ; Umberto - Night Has A Thousand Screams ; The Eccentronic [...]

As BrooklynVegan recently reminded me , Bob Mould 's Kickstarter campaign to fund the concert film version of See A Little Light: A Celebration of the Music and Legacy of Bob Mould is nearing its end. With just has a week to go. the campaign is about 82% of the way toward funding the film, which captured the 2011 Mould tribute concert featuring performances by Dave Grohl, Britt Daniel, Ryan Adams, No Age, Craig Finn and Tad Kubler of The Hold Steady, and more. [...]

20. BOB MOULD - SILVER AGE This album wasn’t playing constantly this year, but every time I did play it, I kept being reminded how great it was. A simply stellar rock and roll album that makes me want to get up and rock my face off. A definite good album for getting work done during the day. Bob Mould - The Descent 19. OF MONSTERS AND MEN - MY HEAD IS AN ANIMAL While "Little Talks" was burning up the radio [...]

well, here we are. 2012 almost over, my 7th year of running this joint has passed, and this is what i have come up with. most of this will not be a surprise to anyone who follows this place with any regularity. this year was increasingly hard, i must admit. i think every record in my top ten has the potential of landing that coveted #1 spot cause they're all amazing records in my very very humble opinion, but at the end of the day there can only be one, much like the highlander. my number one record this year [...]
![[Last Thursday's Playlist] NEW MUSIC NIGHT VII at River Gods](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4549913_lg.jpg)
The latest installment of our ongoing series of DJ gigs known as NEW MUSIC NIGHT happened on an evening when there was a whole lot of other stuff going on around Boston. Hell, if I wasn't up in the booth, there are at least 2 shows I'd have loved to check out. But I did my sonic duty, alternating hours with Jay Clicky Clicky , by playing a plethora of entirely new tracks for the patrons of beloved Central Square bar River Gods . Check out Jay's playlists at Clicky Clicky . [...]
Listening to Silver Age is less an exercise in growing with an artist than revisiting past glories. For better or worse, Silver Age is a pretty good summation of the signposts of Mould's career some time back. "Never too old to contain my rage," goes a line on the new Bob Mould disc, and you have to kind of be amazed. Not at the penmanship, per se, but at the realization that, holy crow!, Bob Mould is more than 50 years old! (He turns 52 in mid-October.) Was it really nearly a half-lifetime ago that [...]

Tweet One of the most important albums of my teenage years was Cooper Blue by Sugar. The tunes, the drums, and the guitar that sounded like a swarm of bees attacking a tank. Just pure beauty. Anyway, Bob Mould of Sugar and Husker Du is back. Maybe Rock has a future after all? This takes me back to Cooper blue. It is simple pop music with energy, pain and those guitars are back. There is a whole [...]
Not that I had any doubts, but Bob Mould proved tonight on Letterman that he hasn't lost a step. If anything, it looks like he might've gained a step. Plus John Wurster banging the drums has to help at least a little. You can also check out the official video for The Descent and the Soundcloud stream below. It's such a good song, and such a good record!
Here are a few MP3s of songs from some of the better albums released this week: Raymond Byron & The White Freighter – “Allegiance” and “You’ll Never Surf Again” from Little Death Shaker California Wives – “Marianne” and “Purple” from...
This is the best thing I've heard from Bob Mould in a long time. His new album, Silver Age , will be released this Tuesday, September 4th on Merge Records (along with fellow North Carolina label Yep Roc the premiere refuge for 80s and 90s indie rockers). It sounds to me like Bob listened pretty closely to the Sugar reissues that recently came out on Merge and it put him back in touch with what he is best at: creating loud, melodic rock music. His post-Sugar solo albums have had their moments, but I feel like he's spent the [...]
