Bob Mould - Return to Dust from the 2007 album District Line on Anti-. Originally from KEXP Song of the Day on December 31, 1969, 4:59pm

I love Jersey. Even after circling the air space above Trenton for a good half an hour just waiting for Newark to clear our plane to land, I still love being back in the Garden State. Even after having to drive through Newark and Elizabeth to purchase gas because I was somehow below Empty after leaving the airport parking lot (was someone in Newark siphoning my gas?). Even after returning home to find my toilet wouldn't flush (although it worked again this morning for some unknown reason). And even after fighting the normal traffic on Route [...]
It's the first notable new music release day of 2008 here in the States (thanks mostly to the Magnetic Fields), so I thought I'd write a bit about a bunch of albums I'm really looking forward to hearing in the coming calendar year. Hopes are high for many of these, so it'll be interesting to check back with my list when I pull together my next year-end list; not just to see which ones lived up

It seems like a good time for Bob Mould to return, doesn't it? I kind of feel like it's been a long time since I gave the ex-Husker Du/Sugar front man any considerable amount of time in my CD player or on my iPod, but I'm feeling a bit nostalgic. The material I've heard from his new solo CD, 'Direct Line', in stores in early February sounds great, but in a strange way. Here's a guy who undoubtedly has influenced a generation of singer/songwriters and his new material, while sounding distinctly Mould-ish, also sounds like material that some [...]
(as featured on This Week's Finds , Jan. 6-12) "On the Chin" - Grey Race I'll start the new year with a couple of songs that are not really new at all--a reminder that a song is always new if you haven't heard it yet. "On the Chin" begins with a straightforward eighth-note riff linked by an amplified acoustic guitar-neck sound, which emerges after the riff is heard the second time. If it's gratuitous, movement-wise (the guitarist doesn't really need to run his fingers up and down the [...]

By marty After a pretty good year for music , if not the business itself, Stereogum recently compiled a listing of confirmed, estimated and wild-ass rumored album releases for 2008. The listing details a wide range from the Breeders , Death Cab , B-52s and Michael Jackson 's latest attempt to generate cash flow. Two releases caught my nog-addled attention: Cat Power 's "Jukebox" out on January 22nd and Bob Mould 's "District Line" on [...]

The internet can be so eerily voyeuristic (you know this, anonymous blog reader). I'll admit to being fascinated by sites like PostSecret and Found Magazine ; now I have a new place to click and look inside the ephemera of other people's lives. The To-Do List Blog collects and reprints people's lists for your perusal. Seems fitting in this list-making season, and you get to see charming resolutions like #5 above: " Let my eyelashes grow ." A noble aspiration for us all. This week's tunes, a day late: [...]

This time of year is always so strange for me. Because while everyone else is compiling their "Best of…" list for the preceding 12 months*, I'm inevitably jumping ahead. There are so few new titles in December, I can't help but flip the calendar forward and start digging into the forthcoming bounty. For a change, instead of living in the past, I find myself stuck in the future. Not that it feels too different; I'm still gassing on about music most folks haven't heard – or heard of – yet. With that in mind, here are my Top Ten faves [...]
Bob Mould, once of Husker Du and Sugar returns with a new solo album called District Line on February 5 on Anti- Records. Here's a song from that album via Spinner.com The Distance Between Us - Bob Mould
Bi-monthly, MFR reviews the Top Ten tracks on music-blog aggregator Elbo.WS in 50 words or less. For the weeks of November 30th through December 14th, here are the ten most popular songs: Destroyer Destroyer - "Foam Hands" After the relaxed, sinuous arrangements which characterized the best parts of 2006's Rubies , one might be a bit hesitant to embrace the more direct, Dylan-incorporates-doo-wop, melancholy of "Foam Hands". However, even the most benumbed listener would melt once [...]
Each week we take a listen to some of the top songs from elbows, review them and then give our selection of alternative tracks that we believe should be getting more recognition Beach House "Gila" Oh so dreamy, oh so much reverb, Beach House continue their Mazzy Star-ish formula with this song. I really liked listening to their last album late night, like at 3:00 in the morning after coming home from the bars, it's a nice nightcap. Their not doing much different with this song than [...]
Streaking is the act of taking off one's clothes and running naked through a public place. The act itself is pretty awesome, but throw in a live television event watched by millions and millions of people, and the act becomes performance art. Many have tried, but few have been as successful as these brave soles who turned some normally poised and collected... photo by Casey (2006) December is well under way and we've been sorting through all of the music featured during 2007 for our year end roundup. This task will need to be set aside for now as a preview from Bob Mould's upcoming February 2008 release District Line has surfaced over at Spinner.com. From what I gather, after visiting Boblog, the track was originally supposed to be for listening

Their exploits frequently overshadowed their music (here's a nice gift idea ), but the legend of The Replacements continues to grow with each passing year. For my money, however, Husker Du was hands down the best band in the Twin Cities during the 80s. Even today, I cannot drop the needle on Zen Arcade without being astounded by the scope and sheer power of that record. Since Husker Du went the way of the dodo, [...]
