Eighteen venues, four days, and a whole earful of great of music make up this year's MusicFestNW.

Ratatat Club Nokia was packed for the danceable onslaught of NYC duo Mike Stroud and Evan Mast, aka Ratatat, on tour in support of their latest full-length, LP4 . Usually solo Bobby Birdman opened with a drummer, filling out his electronic-driven surf melodies with a rich beat. DOM followed, with their eponymous lead singer's appearance as such a visual homage to Dave Pirner that I was concerned "Runaway Train" was going to come pouring forth. Portland's once-upon-a-time nickname of "Little Beirut" was revived for Ratatat's most recent visit (and they say G.W. Bush did nothing!). The carnivorous nature of the crowd ate up Ratatat and chewed up the openers as they saw fit. Don't let the plaid shirts and hot pants fool you: we're ruthless. Bobby Birdman was the first to grace the stage and was a perfect harbinger of the night, even if the crowd was tepid at best. Ray Raposa's songs are sparse but full-sounding; experimental and indulgent but endlessly listenable; sometimes a bit lonely and creepy. The local songwriter—he's a bit of a drifter, but keeps coming back to Portland—has only gotten better as of late, and here's some video evidence from the Terror Eyes blog. Here we find Raposa at his minimal best, and the crunching leaves on "Some Kind of Fool"—while they may not seem intentional—are an entirely appropriate touch. Nykyisin LCD Soundsystemistä tutun James Murphyn DFA-levymerkin talliin kuuluva YACHT personoituu vahvasti "indierockin Timbalandiksi" kutsuttuun Jona Bechtoltiin . I know it's Monday and that all of these performances happened on Saturday, but I never went to sleep that night, so it's as if this post isn't late. Saturday brought freezing cold weather and drizzly rain to Austin, and it admittedly put a damper on everything.
