Cover Alert: Calexico – Later Alligator (Bobby Charles)

Cover Alert: Calexico – Later Alligator (Bobby Charles) For the past two weekends the Crescent City has played host to the annual New Orlean's Jazz & Heritage Festival . During their first-weekend set, Calexico paid tribute to one of New Orleans' native sons - the severely under-appreciated Bobby Charles. The late singer-songwriter, who likely best known to HT readers for his appearance on The Last Waltz soundtrack, began writing and recording songs at the age of 17. While he never quite achieved success as a solo artist, Charles' songs have been recorded by an impressive list of musicians including Ray Charles, [...]

Most-Visited Parks in 2011

Most-Visited Parks in 2011 The Smokys win again. That is one beautiful park, but man, places like Gatlinburg, TN are not high on the ol' priority list. In any case, Great Smoky Mountain National Park , comes in at just over 9 million, and the runner up, Grand Canyon National Park clocks in at 4. Wild. The reason? Well, Rocky points out that GSMNP "doesn’t charge people do drive through on the highway that transits the park, but they do count them all [...]

Bobby Charles: Bobby Charles (Deluxe Edition)

Yourstru.ly Presents: Vetiver & Fruit Bats - I Must Be In a Good Place Now
1972's Bobby Charles is an undeniable classic, and this Deluxe Edition pays a perfect tribute to not just the album, but also Charles's impressive songwriting catalog as a whole. Bobby Charles was a unique musical talent. The Louisiana native with Cajun roots brought all the swampy sounds and deep culture of his home to his music, but Charles's songs also took a village to raise. Charles himself was a pure songwriter, one that operated more on intuition than musical ability. He didn't really play instruments, but when he was a teenager he wrote hits like "See You [...]

Bobby Charles - Down South in New Orleans

ESPECIAL BOBBY CHARLES 173

Your Sister’s (Record) Rack: Rick Danko

Your Sister’s (Record) Rack: Rick Danko Riffling through my big sister's stack of records I found an album that many people would consider a lost classic: Rick Danko , the 1977 solo debut album from the bass player and singer from the Band.  It was the first solo LP by a member of that beloved group, which had famously disbanded the year before with its "Last Waltz" concert in San Francisco. And of all the solo projects by the members of the Band, only Rick Danko features each member of the group.  Other friends and guests included Eric Clapton, Ron Wood, [...]

The Originals Vol. 36

The Originals Vol. 36 After a couple of Original specials — Beatles and Reworked Hits — we return to the usual random selection of five lesser known originals: the Bacharach/David song I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself, the seriously great Super Duper Love (which became a hit for Joss Stone), Gordon Lightfoot's Early Morning Rain, rock & roll classic See You Later Alligator, and the story of the Coke jingle that first was another song and then a megaghit which most of us might have preferred to have been taught. * * [...]

I Must Be In A Good Place Now

I Must Be In A Good Place Now Vetiver - photo by Alissa Anderson I heard this song on The Loft yesterday in quite the perfect setting - driving with my wife and two girls down a road outside of Flagstaff, AZ. It was a picture perfect day - snow on the ground, green pine trees, blue sky, and the snowy San Francisco Peaks in the near distance - and this song by Vetiver came on. I Must Be In A Good Place Now ... - Nice, [...]

Who Dat?™ Geaux Saints!

Who Dat?™ Geaux Saints! Oh yeah ... all those years when nobody else cared about the Saints, it was "Who Dat? Nation" and "Who Dat?" dis and "Who Dat?" dat.  Now the NFL is claiming "Who Dat" is copyrighted, or it's a trademark, or something.  Now that the New Orleans Saints are in the Super Bowl, the NFL is seizing"Who Dat?" - oh wait ... "Who Dat?™" - in hopes of feeding its already bloated billion-dollar enterprise. Who Dat?™ who's greedy?  The NFL, dat's Who Dat?™! In other news, our great friend and awesome photographer Art [...]

STACKS: Bobby Charles

STACKS: Bobby Charles It is with some level of embarrassment that I admit that it took Bobby Charles' passing earlier this month to spur me to investigate his 1972 self-titled debut album. Sad circumstances aside, boy am I glad I did. I'll leave it to those better qualified than this johnny-come-lately to offer anything resembling a eulogy. But here's the bare essentials: Louisiana teenager pens hits for such notables as Bill Haley & The Comets & Fats Domino , eventually finds his way to Woodstock, New York and records his first [...]

Bobby Charles Must Be In A Good Place Now. . . .

Bobby Charles Must Be In A Good Place Now. . . . I was saddened to learn Thursday of the passing of Robert Charles Guidry, a/k/a Bobby Charles, without a doubt one of the great songwriters of American popular music. With no musical training, and unable, or unwilling, to play an instrument, he managed to write countless songs, lyrics and melodies that will endure. Some he sang and recorded himself, but many were done by others, including big name performers who knew a good tune when they heard one and had success with Bobby's. He started out with the rockin' "See You Later, Alligator", that he recorded in New [...]

R.I.P. – Bobby Charles & Teddy Pendergrass

R.I.P. – Bobby Charles & Teddy Pendergrass Bobby Charles The music world has lost two giants this week - singer/songwriter Bobby Charles, and R&B singer Teddy Pendergrass.   Charles, writer of "Walkin' To New Orleans" and "See You Later Alligator," also cut a highly regarded solo album in 1972 with members of the Band.  His songs have been recorded by the Band, Joe Cocker, Ray Charles and Kris Kristofferson. Bobby Charles obituary in the Lafayette Daily Advertiser Story from [...]

I Could Also Be Someplace Else

I Could Also Be Someplace Else Bobby Charles: Long Face ( buy ) Just got the news that singer and songwriter Bobby Charles has died. The author of See You Later Alligator and Walking To New Orleans was 71. His selftitled debut album from 1972 is a rootsy, near-forgotten minor masterpiece with a relaxed but always funky Louisiana feel that every self-respecting groover should own. Hope he´s in a good place now.

Bobby Charles :: 1938-2009

We lost yet another legend today. Bobby Charles, aged 71, passed away at his home in Abbeville, LA. Charles' music has graced the pages of AD countless times over the years, from his solo work to his contributions to the Band, and most recently his re-appreciation by the Vetiver clan on their 2008 LP Thing [...]
