From the 'Hey, I thought this blog was about VINYL?!' file comes this last retrospective look back at previous posts as we approach 1,000 posts. (Which happens uh, later today...) (First posted Tuesday, August 11, 2009.) Throughout her life, my mom has been a wonderful pianist. Entirely self taught and without the ability to read music, she could listen to most pieces and in moments play it back for you almost verbatim. Throughout her life, my mom has been a wonderful pianist. Entirely self taught and without the ability to read music, she could listen to most pieces and in moments play it back for you almost verbatim. It's a skill she seemingly had to pick up as her father, a violinist and concert organizer, forestalled my mother's desire to study and participate in the classical ensembles he'd put together each weekend in the family's home in Newark, New Jersey. And my mother never got over it. I think she'd say her father's grand ego and perhaps chauvinism on some [...]

I posted on British "goth" band The Bolshoi once before. That was quite a little while ago, but I've noticed my page has gotten many hits from folks searching for their music. I figured I'd put a bit more up for their fans. Several of their singles were issued in limited edition packages under the title Give It Some... Each of these limited versions contained two live tracks recorded at London's Town and Country. Here's the lot of them. [...]
It's been an emotional week here at the Like Sugar Control Room. My dear friend's mother died, only days before his wedding. That sadness has impacted me greatly. I was already a wreck, anticipating attending his wedding. His bride has the same name as my bride (who abandoned me after 3 months of marriage.) I am feeling rather selfish for having any issue with attending a wedding. I am just so very disillusioned with the concept of marriage at this point. I have a mother and two step-mothers. It means nothing today, it seems. Commitment is over. Anyway, it [...]

I have a confession. I was fairly into goth music in the late-'80s. I mean a lot of it (Siouxsie, Sisters of Mercy, The Cure, the various Bauhaus offshoots) was genuinely popular, but I also own records by Red Lorry, Yellow Lorry, Xymox, the Bolshoi and others. And I still like them! As we're experiencing a bit of a goth resurgence these days (Gang Gang Dance, Crystal Stilts, Shearwater) and 'tis the season to be spooky, I thought I'd post this Classic Goth mix that I made for my local [...]
