When you think of a house show, you typically think a grungy basement with beer cans strewn everywhere. This show was quite different. This concert was put on by Common Chord Concerts , a self-proclaimed "network of music-lovers in Charlotte and surrounding communities that share an interest in original acoustic, Americana and folk/rock music." Common Chord has only been in existence for a couple months, but has put on some incredible shows so far with a strong line-up of shows in the coming months. After walking into the Common Chords founder's wonderful home, I knew this show [...]

I knew exactly two things going into this gig. First, the Last Bison had asked us to cover a gig last autumn but I had to turn it down because I was already booked. And second, they were local-ish, from about three hours south of Washington DC in Chesapeake, VA. I left later that night from a sold out show feeling jubilant and looking forward to their album coming out next month. Durham, North Carolina’s Bombadil opened [...]

Looks like The Last Bison and Bombadil show at The Camel that's happening tomorrow night (Feb. 15) at the Camel is going to sell out very soon. This is going to be a great show. Merry Christmas, everyone. Yes, this blog celebrates Christmas. This blog went to Christmas Eve service like a good blog does, that way it doesn't have to miss out on presents the next morning. And then the blog and went and drank far too much with the rest of the internet, oh holy night indeed. There are a few Christmas present under the tree for you and luckily enough, none are a carton of cigarettes. Starting with a video from The Gundersen Family Christmas up in Seattle last week, 200 people getting together and singing "Have Yourself [...]

It's that time of the year again. The weather is beginning to cool at night, hurricanes are on our horizon, NC State football is starting up and what is it that I smell? Ah, the fresh scent of one of the greatest music festivals in the nation right here in our own back yard. Hopscotch Music Festival is next week, September 6-8, in downtown Raleigh and everyone around is excited and geared up for this third annual event. This week on the Local Beat I [...]
Last winter, the men of Bombadil released their third full length album, All That The Rain Promises (brilliantly streaming here ). It was a long time coming and many of us wondered and worried if it would come at all. But it did and now we can all move on because guess what? The band already has. Perhaps it's to make up for their 2+ years of silence or maybe it's because they've built a huge reserve of material during that time. Whatever the reason, Bombadil is leaping straight into their next [...]

You probably know that Bombadil is playing again, and they have a show on Sept. 1 at Cat's Cradle. Well, Bombadil drummer James Phillips also has a new electronic solo project called Sumner James , and the debut solo album "29 Days" will come a couple of days before that Cradle show. Phillips says he wrote, arranged, and recorded these the album during the month of February as a "personal challenge," and to explore his newfound interest in electronica. "To eliminate distractions, I moved into the barn on Pendervis Farm outside of Portland, OR [...]
This week on the Local Beat we are continuing to look back into the past at some of our favorite interviews ever on the program for our "Best of the Local Beat" series that is happening throughout July. This is the third Friday of the month and the interviews we are re-airing are some of my favorites. At 5pm we will listen to an interview I had with the fellas in Durham band Bombadil last November in which they stopped by to talk about their first album in two years, All That The Rain Promises [...]

6am Repeat is a recurring feature here at Folk Hive in which we stream the latest track that plays incessantly in the earbuds when we awake at that hour and imbibe massive amounts of coffee and cigarettes in preparation for the advancing day. Consider it your jam of the day — a sweet, sweet gift from me to you. I love you, dude. Bombadil's latest record All That The Rain Promises THAT NONE OF YOU FUCKERS THOUGHT TO TELL ME ABOUT is a musical mixture the most [...]

Being from Florida, summertime is my favorite time. I love it when it gets so hot and muggy that even the mosquitoes can't fly and your only refuge is a piece of watermelon, an ice-cold beverage and the music in front of you. My three favorite outdoor venues in the Triangle allow picnics and sell all of the best local brews. Read on for summer shows to look out for at The North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA), Sarah P. Duke Gardens, and American Tobacco. North Carolina Museum of Art: [...]
One of my favorite events of last fall was Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival , located in Pittsboro, N.C. Camping out with your friends, seeing incredible live music, and living off campfire food and veggie things for the weekend is a cure for anything that's been getting you down. And it's back again for its 10th spring installment, April 19-22. This spring's lineup is exciting: Leftover Salmon, Donna the Buffalo, Blitz the Ambassador, The Red Clay Ramblers, BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet, Rubblebucket, Suénalo, Preston Frank, The Sim Redmond Band, Elephant Revival, David Wax Museum, Driftwood, and Lydia [...]
![[Listen] – Bombadil – “A Question”](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3955866_lg.jpg)
Tweet The number of times I've listened to a song with talking involved and enjoyed it are so rare that only three examples come to mind; the first being Titus Andronicus ' " A More Perfect Union ," the second being all of Paul Baribeau 's perfectly written songs which I think count as talking, and now Bombadil 's " A Question ." There's something in this practically self-deprecating song that feels both Bishop Allen [...]

Laundromat - Bombadil // Buy A Question - Bombadil // Buy Bombadil (@wearebombadil) was formed in 2005 at Duke University, so basic math suggests its members are (hopefully) over their horrible, awkward preteen/teen years. The level of tension and anxiety presented in their songs, though, is so expertly crafted that it’s difficult to imagine the tracks as anything but the musings of a hopelessly discomforted teen. The group’s new album, All That The Rain [...]
Awkward is my favorite emotion. It rattles you, takes you out of any complacency you might have settled in to, humbles you, and leaves you feeling uncomfortable to your very core. Sure happy is great but a good emotional challenge does a better job as showcasing who you really are. So it's no surprise that I got all squirmy and excited over the delightfully awkward song "A Question" and then proceeded to send terribly awkward and embarrassing text messages true to form. Waiting to ask a girl out at the laundromat is pretty awkward too and there's a song about [...]
I have discovered that in my later years (well, I’m only 21, but still) I have become more lazy and less inclined to ever leave Raleigh to do anything. Especially to do something that requires money, like go to a concert. Add Bombadil to the picture and it changes things completely. On Saturday, Nov. 12, Bombadil graced Cat’s Cradle with their album release party for All That The Rain Promises , the long awaited new album from this local band that is comprised of four very talented men: Bryan Rahija, Stuart Robinson, Daniel Michalak, and [...]
It has been a long time since we have heard anything come from the local folk group Bombadil , which is really quite a shame. Maybe that is why I was so excited for the release of All That The Rain Promises , a new album that follows their 2009 release of Tarpits and Canyonlands . Everything that you hoped would be present on a Bombadil album is apparent in this new release: strong emotional ballads, beautiful folk and pop melodies, and upbeat songs with deeper meanings all combine to create an album that one can become [...]

I am becoming more and more confident in talking on the radio. I am slowly developing my voice - my on-air personality. There is still room for improvement; namely in the transition from Stuarto's show to mine, but I'll get there eventually. Last Friday's show was centered around indie-folk again, with plenty of psychedelic folk, orchestral folk, and folk-pop as well. As started last week, two songs will be featured at bottom. "Notorious Lightning" by Destroyer off Your Blues "Shanty for the Arethusa" [...]

Durham, NC band Bombadil are back with a new album called All That The Rain Promises . If you had the honor of hearing the band's previous LP, Tarpits And Canyonlands , you'll have an idea of what to expect. Bombadil creates an off-beat approach to folk-pop with odd lyrics and a unique songwriting style. You definitely get that on the new album. One moment filled with life and full-blown instrumentation, Bombadil is just as apt to drop the bottom out for [...]
