[Birthday shout-out today to Tommy Keene — now, for tonight ...] Top stops on a Thursday: ► Seems like forever ago that Ida Maria built a "Fortress Round My Heart." It was back in 2008 when the Norwegian rocker dented playlists with "I Like You So Much Better When You're Naked" and "Oh My God," and now the 26-year-old songstress returns with a new album, "Katla." She headlines the Roxy tonight, with locals Chasing Kings and Holland Greco opening. [Obligatory promotional note: Your humble [...]

1. Ten extra pounds makes a big difference! 2. Bike riding takes a whole lot more total body effort than using the AMT machine at the gym. 3. Those hills didn't get any smaller since I last tackled them. 4. Winter definitely took a toll on the roads--lots more bumps and cracks near the shoulder than last year. 5. Knock on wood, no new unleashed dogs to contend with. [...]

I understand i'm more than a bit late with the 5th of November celebration post but i've been genuinely busy all week, i've hardly had time to do anything since last Tuesday and the free time i've had since then has been spent trying to sleep or get things ready. But without further delay i'll introduce some 5th of November themed tracks i found lying amongst my collection... MP3: Castanets - Worn From The Fight With Fireworks MP3: Animal Collective - [...]
by marissa bea What's the connection between all of these artists? Modern mixed with classic; swifty vocals laced with edgy tunes; creation and innovation. From the use of classical instruments like violins and cellos, to the modern use of computers and other digital media, music nowadays has got so much history to pull from, it's amazing some of the things musicians can invent. ► [...]

June is nearly over, and with that we shall celebrate LGBT Pride month (thanks Obama) , yes it's no longer just Gay Pride, which I think is awesome. Here in NYC specifically we've just ended Pride week , a week filled with marches, parades and parties all over the city. This year also marks the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, the catalyst for the modern LGBT rights movement. We are still fighting for equal rights but with more and more states allowing same sex marriage and with a democrat in office again, it seems likely [...]

"I began pouring out my pony gear on top Susan who was still prone on the bed. While Dakota was outside getting his things, I climbed into my black Lycra second skin. After a quick brushing out of my tail, Susan wrapped my harness belt around my waist, with the long full tail flowing down my legs. With a glimpse of remorse, I realized that poor Dakota was left to his own devices in getting tacked up, but Susan already had me slipping away – and certainly one pony could not harness another. I recall holding [...]

When you think fiery and compelling indie pop you don't typically think cello, but Madigan Shive (aka Bonfire Madigan ) has been working to change that a while now. Her music is a strange and fascinating mix of blues, punk, stage presentation, and fine orchestration. Starting on cello at the age of nine, she began her composing career at fifteen in the Pacific Northwest Riot Grrrl scene releasing music with seminal independent record labels K and Kill Rock Stars. Shive has gone on to establish herself as a singular and trailblazing performer, blending folk, art, punk, classical and avant-baroque [...]
Next week, anyone with a shred of sense will be traveling to Manchester, Tennessee for the Bonnaroo Music Festival. Ok, so maybe that's not entirely accurate, but a lot of people will be going, including yours truly, many CoS staff members, and a slew of the publicists and artists who supply us with the mp3s needed to create the Friday Mixtape each and every week. Needless to say, creating a new Friday Mixtape for next week, isn't going to be all that easy, and thus, we've made the decision to scrap next week's edition and resume the week after. [...]

"Lady Saves the Dragon (From the Evil Prince)" - Bonfire Madigan I don't think I've ever been tempted before to feature a song simply because of its title but this one was hard to resist. Fortunately the song backed me up here: a strange but hearty slice of punk-cello-rock with a great pulse, an uncorked singer, and the ability to create loose-cannon drama out of not a lot of actual noise. There are no electric instruments here--just a cello, a contrabass, and drums. And then at the center, cellist Madigan Shive's unruly, Björk-ish [...]
