Facebook Nestled amidst some concert announcements in a post last week were a couple of odd one-offs for No Joy and PS I Love You which were not part of any announced tour or timely promotional cycle. It didn't occur to me to ask why, but just a little bit of thought would have made the answer obvious - Wavelength . The dates of their shows corresponded to the four-day weekend of the Toronto music series' twelfth anniversary festival, and though neither of those acts is properly local - they [...]

Frank Yang It may have sounded like Tuesday night's grand Fucked Up throwdown at The Great Hall was going to be an untoppable finale to the 2011 concert season in Toronto, but remember - that was just the first of a two-night event and if you were going to try and top a recital of one of 20112s best albums (that's David Comes To Life , for the record) then a front-to-back performance of one of the best Canadian albums of the past 15 years is a pretty good [...]

Toronto-based Bonjay are an interesting duo. Talented singer Alana Stuart almost signed a big record deal, until she found out they wanted to make her over into " Donna Boogie ." Instead, she found DJ Ian "Pho" Swain at a party and Bonjay was born. Bonjay 's music starts at dancehall, but veers off somewhere different. They are both strongly committed to creating something new. You have to respect that. the interview show with Bonjay Bonjay "Creepin'" [...]

Daniel Boud If the ubiquity of decorations, lights and carols wasn't enough of a hint, let me be the one to break it to you - like it or not, the Christmas season is upon us. And with the holiday season comes Christmas concerts and performances, but if Handel's Messiah or The Nutcracker Suite aren't your speed, local hardcore heroes Fucked Up would like to offer you an alternative - a complete album recital of David Comes To Life . As touring commitments for [...]

by teepoo It's time for another Steamwhistle Unsigned. The next show will be September 30th . Last show featured uprising acts Freedom or Death, The Darcys and Wildlife. This time around there will be three quite different artists: Bonjay, Powers and HotKid. The show's only $5 but the sales go back to the Artists' Health Centre Foundation . Oh, and we're also holding a contest to win 2 Tickets to Steamwhistle Unsigned, Drink tickets, T-shirts, and tickets for a tour of [...]
Steam Whistle's Unsigned series returns for another go on September 30th at the brewery (255 Bremner Blvd). Cover is $5 and proceeds go to the Artists Health Centre Foundation. The line-up is especially strong this time around. On the bill are indie beat-dropping Bonjay, the fuzzy pop of Powers (featuring former members of The Ghost Is Dancing), and forceful rockers HotKid. I have an Unsigned

Bonjay! Here's a fact, nobody doesn't love Bonjay. I'm basing that generalization on what I've read in the past about the innovative duo comprised of Alanna Stuart and Ian “Pho” Swain, but we certainly enjoy the Bonjay here at the hill as well. They are the 7th post in our attempt to post on every HPX '11 act , and our first foray into the B's (caveat: we'll be re-visiting the A's at some point). If you're looking to dance the night away on Thursday, Oct. 20th, make sure you hit the Seahorse to catch Bonjay headlining a certified [...]

Party People...Party People....can ya'll get funky?!?! (said in Afrika Bambaataa Planet Rock electro voice, natch) The summer is rapidly flying by is a blaze of, well, rain and fog for yer pals out here in Halifax, so that's kind of a bummer. BUT, the end of summer also has a silver lining, football season!!!! Sorry, little excited there, but the real silver lining for music fans in Halifax is that the initial acts for the 2011 Halifax Pop Explosion have been announced . You know what that means....huge list of said acts in a blob of text goes [...]

Summerworks What: Summerworks Why: Celebrated long-running theatre festival that added a musical component four years ago. Who: In its short run, Summerworks already counts some of the cream of the current Canadian musical crop as its alumnus - this year's class seems certain to add to that list. For specifics, keep reading. When: There will be six nights of live music double-headers running over the course of the festival's week-and-a-bit duration, with the night-by-night breaking down as follows - there's [...]

Words: Saam Das June, you have disappointed me with your relative lack of brilliant singles. Anything, however, is better than Cher Lloyd's upcoming single, 'Swagger Jagger' . I weep for humanity. Check out ten MUCH BETTER singles from last month below, and the photo above is a hint to our single of the month winner. Benjamin Francis Leftwich - 'Box Of Stones' (Release: 20th June) [...]

Frank Yang Hands down, the best thing to happen to NXNE in recent years is the designation of Yonge-Dundas Square as the festival's main stage and making the shows staged there - usually featuring the lineup's biggest names - free for everyone. And what's better is that despite being located in pretty much the most central and public place in the city, there's been no signs that they festival has been concerned about diluting the quality of the performances to be a little more family-friendly; witness last year's near-carnage of Iggy & [...]

It's Thursday and that usually means a post chock-full of videos here at the hill, but I'm on vacation for a few days. That should give me a pass on getting the Video Hits posted, but since we already missed the Video Hits last week, I knew that wouldn't do, and so I've quickly put together a fairly eclectic post with some of the most recent CDN videos that have come across the HH news desk. This group of songs is all over the map, both the geographical kind and the musical one, with [...]

7 June, 2011 In many ways, tonight’s gig wasn’t entirely what I expected from my first ever gig in that London. (I moved out of my beloved Leeds a week or two ago). For a start, it was so quaint - there were chandeliers, and rich staircases providing a cosiness which helped keep my homesickness for the Brudenell Social Club at bay. Also, I was flabbergasted by the amount of space on offer. The place could only have been a third full at most - and there I was thinking that any gig in London (let alone one [...]
We spoke of up north duo Bonjay a few weeks back, there track "Creepin" has been getting heavy play since. Visuals for the track have been released. Single is available now. This duo is growing on us rapidly..................
Bonjay, a Spice Island slang for "Good God!" were born at one of Ottawa's legendary Disorganised parties. Alanna Stuart went up to Ian “Pho” Swain, who was djing at the party and the rest is history. They started doing remixes for labels like Mad Decent, Ninjatune and Ghetto Arc (XL Recordings) and now they are releasing their [...]
