Bonjay took their sweet time but they are finally putting something out officially. I've been following them and supporting them for a bit more than a couple years now, after I first encountered Alanna while playing a gig in Ottawa. These guys have clearly a unique sound blending elements that are never blend together: Dancehall and electronic music being the basis from which they work with, on top of they add their influence of Soul R'n'B music as well as indie-rock/indie-pop songwriting. I'm late on this post, but thanks to Bands Undone , I've been exposed to a couple really good acts. Last week featured Parlour Steps for the the third installment and Bonjay for the fourth. I was fortunate enough to catch Parlour Steps' solid set at Canteen where the group played a couple tracks off their most recent release Hidden Names . Canteen's Bands Undone got its groove on with the dance duo Bonjay on November 19th. The duo consist of Alanna Stuart and Pho. It wasn't an acoustic set, more like a laid back acapella with funky dance beats. Amazed with Alanna's vocal abilities when she sang without a mic. Filed under: You Oughta Know , Canada "Bonjay" is a transformation of "bonjour" in Grenadian Creole which means "Good God!" This is also the frequent reaction to the Toronto-based avant-dancehall group which adopted the expression as its name. "I heard my mom and my aunt say it any time something exciting happened," the group's singer Alanna tells Spinner.
