On Wolfroy Goes To Town, the 2011 release of BONNIE PRINCE BILLY and his backing band THE CAIRO GANG, there's been this moment, somewhere halfway through the outstanding track Quail & Dumplings, in which a female voice arose – majestic yet unstable, shivering yet clear and strong, proclaiming "why wait for someday, why make a The post Angel Olsen - Half Way Home appeared first on Nothing But Hope And Passion - NBHAP - Music Magazine & more .

In the 2005 film Junebug , Will Oldham's character works for a Chicago curator, on the lookout for "outsider artists" in the backwoods of North Carolina for a big city gallery. It's not a bad metaphor for Oldham's musical career. He's spent much of the past two decades exploring the fringes of Southern musical traditions and giving voice to the raw, primal spirit of Appalachia. His artistic trajectory has been as gnarled and twisted as his mountain-man beard, traveling in and out of one quintessential American genre after another, noisy and raw one [...]

Bonnie in a black cab... Choosing the right venue for a gig is integral to a good gig in terms of setting the atmosphere, allowing the artist to express themselves in a comfortable environment and a whole host of incredibly valid reasons so getting the choice right is extremely important. Or you could just shove them all into the back of a black cab, like Black Cab Sessions have been doing so successfully for some time now. Check out Bonnie "Prince" Billy 's session for [...]

At the end of Louis CK's recent interview in The New York Times , he talks about how Woody Allen went out on a limb to make Take The Money and Run , a mockumentary about a criminal who really sucked at being a criminal. His experiment paid off, and though the studio was apparently angry, the movie was a success. The interview closes with this quote from Louis: "The reason why I'm able to do what I do is not just 'cause Woody Allen is so cool. It's 'cause Woody [...]

Phosphorescent at Bonnaroo 2011 ( more by Graeme Flegenheimer ) As mentioned , Newport Folk Festival is returning this year to Fort Adams State Park from July 26 to 28 , and since we last spoke, the lineup has been revealed. It's unfortunate that The Everly Brothers aren't as fawned upon by the current generation of music fans as the acts that were heavily influenced by them. The duo, who are arguably the most successful recording duo of all-time, were known for their close harmony singing which fused early rock and roll with country and folk, and have been name checked by everyone from Simon & Garfunkel to The Beach Boys to The Beatles. As a way of paying homage to the work of Phil and Don Everly, the duo of Bonnie "Prince" Billy and Dawn McCarthy , [...]

Earlier this year, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy and Dawn McCarthy teamed up to issue the collaborative covers LP What the Brothers Sang , which not only pays tribute to the legendary rock 'n' roll group The Everly Brothers, but re-imagines the classic songs for modern listeners. This summer, the pair will take the album to the open road, backed by Emmett Kelly, Cheyenne Mize, and Van Campbell. In addition to two stops in Alaska, they'll be making appearances at the Dawson City Music Festival in the Yukon and Rhode Island's [...]

As mentioned , Bonnie 'Prince' Billy teamed up with past collaborator Dawn McCarthy (of Faun Fables) for an album of Everly Brothers covers, What the Brothers Sang , which is out now on Drag City. A "behind the scenes" video of that album is below. Bonnie and Dawn are supporting that album with a tour this summer surrounding Newport Folk Festival which hits NYC on July 29 at Town Hall . That show [...]

The Everly Brothers kennen velen onder ons vooral van On the wings of a nightingale , Wake up little Susie , All I have to do is dream en vele andere hits die ze eind jaren ’50 en in de jaren ’60 scoorden.

Collaborative duo Bonnie 'Prince' Billy and Marquis De Tren are set to release their second EP together this April. The Solemns EP is the first between the two in a surprising 13 years. And while there was a concerted effort to finally follow up their first Get On Jolly EP, the meeting between Billy and De Tren resulted in just three tracks. The 12" EP will be released April 15th via Domino Records, and the duo's first EP Get On Jolly will also be [...]
What does it mean to bring the music of your childhood into the childhood of your own children? Bonnie "Prince" Billy and frequent collaborator Dawn McCarthy (of Faun Fables ) answer with What the Brothers Sang , a full-length tribute that reinvigorates the songs of the Everly Brothers with a clean, respectful gloss. Phil and Don Everly's impeccable harmonies set a standard for pop music that funneled into the songs of the Beach Boys, the Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, and nearly everyone since. It's a pleasant surprise to hear how deftly Oldham's oaky tenor traces their smooth [...]

It's a big week for new releases, so let's get right into it. First thing on your shopping list: Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds ' latest, Push The Sky Away . Fifteen albums in and Cave & Co. still create unique stunners. As our Music Director, Don Yates, says, it's "a masterful set of brooding, minimalist rock comprised of mostly slow-burning songs with rumbling guitars, mournful keyboards, eerie violin loops, stately rhythms and dark, evocative lyrics." So not so much the heavy rock of his Grinderman project, but if you're a fan if his ballads (and the [...]

You know the score. MM is a blog that (musically) tends to favour the seedier side of life - murder ballads, heartbreak, despair, stories of the downtrodden, the down-on-their-luck, and the downhearted - you know the kind of things we mean. Ours is a world of lonely beer and whiskey chasers nursed in the back booths of dead-end bars, of crack-whores turning tricks in trailers while their children listen on from the next room, and of purposeless drifters stumbling broke, and broken, through dusty ghost-towns. Its just the way we like it round these parts. And [...]
