Enjoy the start of summer. Phoenix – Summer Days Summer officially begins this weekend. (By official I mean it is the first official, unofficial day of Summer come Monday.) I just felt like throwing a Phoenix track in here and I’m upset they [...]
from Monty Python's Life of Brian Do you remember the first time you heard 'Bowl of Oranges' and thought 'Therapeutic smiles? Everything looks new and different? See the beauty in life? Is that Bright Eyes? No waaay! That's waaay too optimistic for Bright Eyes!'? Well, you're about to get that feeling again, 'cause it appears Bonnie 'Prince' Billy has started moving into the light and sees a darkness no more. 'Bowl of Oranges' turned out to be fantastic, and I think I quite like these tracks from the brand-new Lie Down [...]

New Wax Either this came out of nowhere or I wasn't paying close attention, but all of the sudden there is a new Bonnie 'Prince' Billy album out, and its cover looks like it was drawn by a 7th grader. Everyone knows that Will Oldham can effortlessly pen a dark folk song, and he's done so with unrelenting brilliance on albums like I See A Darkness . With Lie Down In The Light , Oldham essentially flips the script. Easily Oldham's most collectively upbeat material to [...]

The Graboid is back once again this week, and thankfully, on it's regularly scheduled day of the week. Lots of great albums this week including new releases from The Wedding Present , Mates of State , French Kicks , and Islands . I checked out a few tracks from Scarlett Johansson's much publicized album of Tom Waits covers, and damn...this is not good at all. Not that i've been hearing a lot of good press in regards to it in the first place, but I still wanted to see [...]

Another Tuesday means another week of new releases. If you’re heading out to your local record store here are a few SDM recommends. If we’ve left anything off the list please let us know. New Releases, Album Art, MP3's and Streams After the Jump...

* Bonnie 'Prince' Billy : Death In The Sea (5.5 mb) | bpb_MP3_Part1 (86.5 mb) | bpb_Flac_Part1 (260.5 mb) From Live At Alte Feurwache : Aug 15th, 2005 : Mannheim, Germany As demonstrated by the number of posts on my site about this fine fellow, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy (look here , here and here ), it should be fairly obvious that I've got nothing but love for this dude. Call it what you want, [...]
Will Oldham has been a personal favorite for a while (be it under Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Palace Music, Oldham or whatever name he's adopted for the project at hand). He is a songwriter in the truest sense of the word. His music spans a wide range of genres from folk to experimental and can be challenging at times, but when he's on, he can be one of the most rewarding musicians performing today. Mr. Oldham participated in a documentary a few years ago that basically consisted of taking hallucinogenic mushrooms with independent filmmaker (and SF local) Caveh Zahedi [...]

All this time as a federal defender, but today was my first time in a federal prison. i've been to many a jail, state penitentiary, and the federal detention center, but today was the first time i was in the fed prison. in the biz of justice and lack thereof, i notice the architecture a lot. is it built to heal? or variously control, intimidate, demoralize, etc. Foucault wrote a book touching on these things called Discipline and Punish and it described a particular variety of prison design called the panopticon . [...]
I had quite the Kentucky day yesterday. I enjoyed the Derby atmosphere that permeated the whole state (trust me - you'd know it was Derby day even if you didn't have a calendar), listened to some My Morning Jacket, sampled a few bourbons at night and closed out with Will Oldham's music. If you find [...]
But boy have I got some great stuff for you tonight. There´s a demo from the new Bonnie Prince Billy album, a chilling John Cale live song based on one of Sam Peckinpah´s legendary westerns and some Junior Murvin for all you reggae lovers out there. Things are a little behind the times here in Vermont. But we're slowly getting there. One small bit of progress is that Montpelier's weekly paper The Bridge is now available online. It's just images of the paper copy you find around town but at least it's something. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy | No Bad News | Buy
In related news, Will Oldham is too awesome for words. You can buy and download Tripping with Caveh for a measly 4 bones right here. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - "Puff the Magic Dragon": mp3

A slight regurgitation, but the track provided by Drag City was in .m4a format. Plus, I'm a sucker for anything new from the hands of Will Oldham. This track, although rough, certainly falls nicely into his recent (abundant) basket of releases. It'll be fun to see how the song progresses before landing on the album (titled Lie Down in the Light , out in May ). It's disturbing how spoiled I am; when news of a new BPB album comes out, all I say is "well, of course". Personally, I love this [...]

Today, for the first time in Swan Fungus history, we have a guest writer. His name is Ian. You've heard his name mentioned here frequently if you read this blog regularly. Please treat him and his prestigious law degree as professionally as you would treat me. That is to say, show him no mercy. Thanks, Ian! Each of the following albums was suggested to me by Evan either by his geeking out in high school, in college, through Instant Messenger, during one of our countless trips to-and-from Princeton Record Exchange, [...]

tonight from 8p to 9p, twenty-five (or so) cities around the world, including san francisco , turned off non-essential lights to draw attention to and combat (if for only a moment) global climate change. last year, in the city of sydney, australia alone, enough people and businesses participated in earth hour to have the roughly equivalent effect of having taken 48,000 cars off the road for an hour. no word yet on the actual scale of involvement, 2008 edition, or its projected impact, though seems safe to say, given the increase in pledged cities, the previous mark [...]
