Wussy perform in the Northwest for the first time ever! / photo from SXSW by Jim Bennett There's something for just about anyone this week and a ton of great local choices. On Monday night, things get awfully loud at the Crocodile with A Place To Bury Strangers, This Will Destroy You, and Dusted, while some of our favorite Canadian's - Japandroids hit the stage at Neumo's. Tuesday night, Posse, Big Eyes, and Battle Stations play a Free show at Chop Suey, Lemonade [...]

You know him. We love him. The iconic, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy will be at Cosmic Charlies on July 7th to support Appalshop (check out details below). He is a man that needs little to no introduction, so we will simply say, grab your ticket before they are gone. You can get'em here . Tickets are $15. Show starts at 8pm. It's a Saturday, so the drive back to Louisville isn't bad, if you have to make the trek. And it is for a good cause. All around positive stuff. Even this track, in an odd way... [...]

Seattle's Shannon Stephens swung by Stone House Recording to lay down a few choice tracks for us during a tour stop in support of her latest release - Pull It Together ( Asthmatic Kitty ). For those of you who enjoy our Front Porch Friday posts - we especially recommend this one for you and your porch. As we previously mentioned - Stephens was a part of the indie folk band Marzuki during her Michigan days. The band included another notable member – and surname nemesis [...]

Do buy that book on Bonnie Prince Billy/Will Oldham I told you about recently. Just finished it, and although we're talking about an extensive series of interviews with Alan Licht here, for a hardcore Bonnie fan like me it read just like a novel. Quite a remarkable guy, our Billy... Goes deep. One cool quote out of many: "What is normally called religion is what I would tend to call music - participating in music, listening to music, making records and singing. I think records and music are more appropriate and more respectful of the human soul than [...]

Paradise Animals - Wolf Among Wolves [Bonnie 'Prince' Billy] | bx . watch the original

Paradise Animals did a superb cover of Bonnie Prince Billy's Wolf Among Wolves. They've got a show coming up on June 15th at the El Mocambo for NXNE and sadly I won't be there because I will be hosting my own partay (more on that soon!) Check out the song below - it's a dreamy, electronic take on the original. Paradise Animals - Wolf Among Wolves (Bonnie Prince Billy)

On May 22nd, Asthmatic Kitty will release the third album from Shannon Stephens. The new album, Pull It Together , was inspired by the Great Recession and features a bluesy, folk sound from the indie singer/songwriter. Stephens collaborated with a number of artists on the new album, including Jeff Fielder (Mark Lanegan, Isobel Campbell) on guitars, Steve Moore (Sufjan Stevens, Laura Veirs) on keys, and James McAlister (Sufjan Stevens, Pedro the Lion) on drums. The album was produced by Grammy-winning engineer Kory Kruckenberg (Rosie Thomas, Damien Jurado), and Pull It Together features a duet with [...]
Pretty lights and hustle: someone turned on the acid faucet this week. Please don't watch these without some sort of substance in your bod-ay. Two beer minimum. Also that Florence + The Machine song from Snow White And The Who? (The Huntsman) has an official video. Scenes of weird black flakes and Kristen Stewart NOT [...]

Even though the original song appears painfully beautiful and tragically sad, "I See A Darkness" is transformed into a danceable bouncy single here. Will Oldham has been known to rerecord old songs but this is no ordinary cover, this is a complete reimagining of the original, and it works. Oldham will be releasing an EP, Now Here's My Plan , in July that has six new versions of songs from his catalog, but you can get a taste with the off beat video below. Featuring some pretty sweet dance moves, rather disturbing googly eyes and black [...]
This happens to be a great week for the low-budget video, full of immediate grainy cinematography and big cheap ideas and strong visual sensibilities. For whatever reason, it's been especially great for energetic rap videos. I loved the offerings from Big K.R.I.T. and Big Baby Gandhi , but I couldn't find room for either one on this list. Here's what did make it: Read More...

I hadn't read the details on Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's Now Here's My Plan album, but WLFY had a lot of the details. It's got reworkings of classic Will Oldham tunes including this classic track, "I See a Darkness." Watch the video at the New York Times
Revamped with the perfect amount of freakish, the BONNIE 'PRINCE' BILLY is coming at us with a new video, I SEE THE DARKNESS . Non-embeddable so you need to watch it via a QUEER .
Watch the new video for Bonnie 'Prince' Billy 's 1999 song and possibly his most famous track "I See A Darkness" below, taken from the EP "Now Here's My Plan" , released on June 24th. The video has Will Oldham and his band walking and dancing through the streets of Glasgow, Scotland, as their eyes have seizures inside their sockets. While the title track to Bonnie "Prince" Billy's 1999 masterpiece, I See a Darkness, might be a benchmark of downcast songwriting, Will Oldham is now directing our gaze away from the abyss with a lively, re-imagined arrangement of the once-bleak number. Recorded by Steve Albini, (a common collaborator on Bonnie's earlier output), "I See a Darkness" 2012 finds a buoyant groove in Oldham's sparse original, thanks largely to his backing band over the past few years: Ben Boye, Van Campbell, Emmett Kelly, Danny Kiely, and Angel Olsen. Add the contrast of director Ben Berman's black and white photography against an off-kilter [...]

Monday Music's the one weekly post wherein Some Of It Was True! drops its London-only rule. Shadows On Stars - I'll Be The Light When I'm alone in my room at bedtime, when the curtains are shut and my teeth are brushed, when tomorrow's outfit is selected, when the alarm clock's on and the light is off - then I light to dance. A merry, silly, giddy jig, the kind never to be seen in public and always done in front [...]
