I actually only know two of the bands on this bill (Boogie Boarder and The Pygmy Shrews), but I suspect that some of the other bands are actually bands we all know and love under different names (Freudian Slit, for instance). The best thing about this show, is that it's a pre-Halloween cover show, and Boogie Boarder (who I think are breaking up?) are going to be Kiss. Yes. That's going to be like The Coen Brothers dressing up like Stanley Kubrick for Halloween and then directing a weird film that is also funny and very entertaining. Uh, or something [...]
Style counts when you're from Nashville playing live in New York, and Heavy Cream had plenty of it with a refreshing combination of fun personalities and punkish sound. Brooklyn based Tony Castles, featuring a member of Boogie Boarder, just released a new track called "Black Girls In Dresses." It has super light and breezy vibe, perfect for yard hangs in the summer. Keep an eye out for the 5-song EP No Service coming out on September 21st. Link:Tony Castles MySpace MP3:Black Girls In Dresses - Tony Castles

I"m not recommending this show so much for the bands. I mean, Dinowalrus and Boogie Boarder are great. I'm a big fan of Boogie Boarder's art rock and I haven't talked about them for awhile on here, so it's all well and good that I'm writing about them now. But I'm mostly recommending this show because of the venue. It's been around since January in Williamsburg, and I love the fact that its in an old party supplies store. This Village Voice article (also where the above photo is from) explains more of the details. It's still a [...]

So a few weeks have passed and we've all had time to accept, that at least for now, Total Bummer might be the most important coming together of music we'll be a part of this year. Stretching the length of those who are dubbed as blog or buzz bands from all around the United States, the Spirit Cat dudes curated and hosted one of the most special festivals/shows/hangouts that I've had the pleasure of hitting up, and it's not until you wake up next to Vacation Dad, Emily Reo and Run DMT after watching Face/Off on VHS that this feeling [...]

First and foremost, happy Record Store Day ! Most independent record stores are having all sorts of festivities today, including in-store performances and special edition releases for sale. There's a ton of cool stuff you'll be able to get, though I hear the lines are already out the door at a lot of Brooklyn stores. Still, try to make it out to a record store today if you can. As for tonight's recommended show, I'm going with Natural Child and Sisters at Death By Audio. I'd seen Sisters a couple times before, but they sounded so, so [...]

Head over heels in love with Future Islands ' upcoming album In Evening Air; mark it down for a definite purchase, it comes out on Thrill Jockey , May 4, 2010. You'll be expected to develop a gigantic crush on Singer J. Gerrit Welmers' voice; he sounds like a gaping wound you're secretly ecstatic to have, as a testament to having lived, and his band, what with the dance-y electronica "post-wave" accompaniment, is pretty much the mantelpiece scar. A gorgeous ode to proper suffering is what it is! They're playing Glasslands with another amazing band, Boogie Boarder [...]

Quick before the month is over, let's stop and look back and reflect on on what we were listening to one year ago. I must say it feels weird posting a live WOXY track the day after they stopped live broadcasting. There must be something we can do to bring back live broadcasts to WOXY . Let's get on that, ok? Oh, this is the March 2009 Mix. Listen. Downloadables: Power+Light (mp3) by 50 Foot Wave La [...]

On Thursday we trekked out to the middle of god damn nowhere for one of the better parties of 2010 so far. 171 Lombardy is out there to say the least but the beauty of it is anything goes. No neighbors wining about noise and no coppers driving by spooking the kids. And that's a good thing, for the most part. We showed up early to take advantage of the free Colt 45 (which didn't last very long).
If you're not familiar with the Brooklyn music scene but you're curious as to what all the fuss is about then come to this show. These bands (Death Set, Cerebral Ballzy, Japanther, Boogie Boarder, & Leaders) define the Brooklyn scene and this party defines the DIY craziness in all it's glory. What to expect? Expect sweaty drunk punks, cheap shitty beer, loud music, bloody noses, stink, holding it
Killer show this Thursday in Greenpoint with some of our favorites - Cerebral Ballzy, The Death Set, Boogie Boarder, Japanther, and Leaders. It's part of the Sounds Like Brooklyn Festival. It's all going down at 171 Lombardy which is way the fuck out by the Kosciusko bridge but fret not young heathen - there's a shuttle bus. The next night the fight continues with dance party.Link:Knife Fight

I took last night off. I fell asleep in front the newest It's Always Sunny at 10, awoke two hours later to zombie-walk into my bed, and just woke up again a few minutes ago. This CMJ business is a lot more tiring than I remember it being. I hope everyone rested up for today, because it's going to be great. It's your last chance to squeeze in all those bands you haven't managed to see yet. I will be running around like a chicken with its head cut off all day for sure. I'm combining today's posts [...]
The CMJ Music Marathon kicks off today and we've been resting up and drinking plenty of water in preparation for five nights of sleeplessness and perhaps one celebratory shot too many. Over the next five days we'll be bringing you coverage of the biggest bands and best surprises from New York City's largest annual music festival. From highly anticipated acts like The xx and The Antlers to those with underground buzz like Boogie Boarder, ZAZA, Bodega Girls and nearly a thousand others, you'll find complete festival coverage right here. We'll also [...]

The Famous Class crew are having a party tonight at LPR. Boogie Boarder, Darlings, Snakes Say Hisss, & Tony Castles are all on the bill. Yeah buddy! And it will only cost you a single $8 bill. Speaking of Boogie Boarder, one of the BB dudes is in Forest City who are playing my birthday party on Friday with Sigmund Droid, Cerebral Ballzy, Hank & Cupcakes, & Radio America (and yes, I will figure
