Tweet Follow @acidjacknyc [Photos by Jill Harrison at For the Love of Brooklyn ] The look of pure joy on the face of Booker T. Jones on this night said everything that needs to be said about why a person becomes a musician. As he sat at the organ, settling into the upbeat groove of "Hip Hug-Her" from the Booker T & the M.G.' s album of the same name, Jones beamed. And the Brooklyn Bowl crowd - most [...]

Booker T. & the M.G.’s : Green Onions (Live) [ purchase ] I woke up early this morning to two pieces of news—first, that our theme for the week was “The Plant Kingdom,” and second, that Donald “Duck” Dunn, the bass player who was a member of Booker T. & the M.G.’s, had died. I naturally thought of posting “Green Onions.” Then, I found out that Dunn joined the band after the song was released. On the other hand, having been a member since 1964, I have [...]

Sometimes you need to chill Popmatters ..... This is the guy who helped write such classics as “Green Onions” and “Time Is Tight” after all. Still—to think the 66-year-old can continue to produce such unparalleled authentic, indescribably funky and unprecedented soulful rhythm and blues music in such a fashion is nothing short of astonishing. All told, The Road From Memphis is enough to make Jim Stewart, Estelle Axton, Duck Dunn, Rufus Thomas, Eddie Floyd, Johnnie Taylor, Isaac Hayes and any other member of the Stax family smile wherever they are. BBC As [...]

File this one under: stuff that snuck by me in 2011. Damn, I'm glad I found it though. If ever there has been a time to describe a song as cool , this is the one. This is an Oceans Eleven kinda song, full of character, swagger and confidence. The next time you're off robbing some joint with a smarmy smile, "Everything is Everything" better be blaring over your iPod. If there is a stand out player in this, the song's George Clooney if you will, its got to be Booker T.'s Hammond Organ. Acting [...]

It's been a long year. Scratch that, it's been a veeerrrry long year. From social revolutions to the end of our occupation of Iraq, from the death of celebrities and dictators to a man who sneezes bullets and the mystery of planking, the world experienced a slew of emotions and all sorts of cultural and political upheaval in 2011. And that's not even counting the plethora of music news that had the blogosphere abuzz this year . So, as the question begs, what comes next? Well, 2012. If you were to believe certain [...]
As with last year's inaugural edition, The Official™ SomethingElse! year-ending Top 10 list requires two or more of us to be in agreement as we gathered around the watercooler at SER Towers. It's no easy task. In the end, we chucked a series of worthy entries - from Bill Frisell and Alice Cooper to The Low Anthem and Fountains of [...]
2011 brought its share of comebacks (Gregg Allman, the Meters' Zigaboo Modeliste, the Time) Stax-related joys (both Booker T. Jones and Steve Cropper issued solo sides) and out-of-nowhere delights (Big Head Todd does the blues?). But how did they rank on my list? Read on, as I count down my favorite blues and R&B finds - from Joe Bonamassa and [...]
Booker T Jones in the HOUSE! I only just heard about the live show this Thursday at the Metro Sydney presented by who else... Niche Productions. Niche Productions is ecstatic to present Booker T. Nestled along the river, in between a land of desolate factories, sits a little dive bar equipped with a simple wooden stage, complete with white Christmas lights twinkling overhead year round and an ever-present green sign over the stage. The Hideout Inn is a cozy institution of Chicago rock. Whether its seeing a friend's band, catching Iron & Wine play a secret show , or listening to Jeff Tweedy recite lyrics to Black Eyed Peas songs, the little venue is a music lover's mecca, and it seems everyone who visits comes away with lifelong memories. [...]
by Sebastian O'Dowd Thursday On arrival at Womad 2011 it was clear that they have stayed true to their original layout of the whole festival, with a world of well being and the main arena being calm, relaxing and an easy space to navigate around. In the evening on Thursday there was one main band who I was dying to see, the Easy Star all Stars who delivered a set replete with entertainment and talent. Their covers of 'Dark Side of the Moon and 'Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts [...]
170 Million Americans for Public Broadcasting is a terrible name for an activist group, but at least it's to the point. It also promotes a cause that's very dear to me. And, courtesy of ANTI- Records, they've assembled a great lineup for a compilation you can get free by signing up for the campaign with your e-mail address, which I encourage you to do.Raise Your Voice! features Tom Waits, Wilco,

A totally refreshing ear-fest from the god-head of the Hammond organ. ★★★★★ One of the original designers of funk-soul-Rhythm & Blues, Booker T. Jones (yep ...as in Booker T and the MGs ) proves to 2011 that he is very much alive and has lost NONE of his gift of musical prowess or creativity. He is still a valid visionary among who there are very, very few. A vibrant soul, hopelessly kind, musically warm, Booker has a thing or three for anyone [...]
