When the guests and themes for Soulive's fourth annual Bowlive run at Brooklyn Bowl were announced, many fans circled last night's date on the calendar as the trio were set to present a tribute to the famed Stax label with the help of The Shady Horns and iconic keyboardist Booker T. Jones. On paper it looked to be an impressive bill and in person it lived up to expectations. [All Photos by Andrew Blackstein ] Afrobeat act The Electric Sound of Johnny Arrow [...]

For this week's Full Show Friday we take the Hidden Track Time Machine back to 2002 for a stirring performance by Neil Young with Poncho and The MGs. Ol' Neil was headlining the Rock am Ring Festival in Nürburgring, Germany with a band that mixed Crazy Horse guitarist Frank "Poncho" Sampedro with Booker T. and The MGs and his whole set was broadcast on famed German live music show Rockpalast. Young was in fine form on this night as he mixed his greatest songs such as The Loner, [...]

Starfish and coffee, maple syrup and jam can just cool their jets, according to Prince' s new song "Breakfast Can Wait". The velvet-funk of this new track harkens back more to his Sign 'O' the Times days, rather than his blusier debut album days like "Screwdriver" did. You can purchase a download of this song for the bargain price of $0.88 at Prince's webstore . If you ever have five minutes to spare, I strongly encourage you to check out Grantland's animated re-enactment of Chappelle's Show creator Neal Brennan's encounter with [...]

Booker T. & The M.G.s’ 1962 debut LP couldn’t possibly live up to the invention and excitement of its title single, but it doesn’t have to, as even without the catchy hooks of their hits, the band’s soul grooves cut deep. With only three originals (“Green Onions,” the cooler variation, “Mo’ Onions,” and the exquisite late-night organ blues, “Behave Yourself”), the Stax house band was left to pull together cover songs from a wide variety of sources. They give instrumental hits by Dave “Baby” Cortez (“ Rinky-Dink ”) and Phil Upchurch (“ Can’t Sit Down ”) solid shots of Memphis [...]

Here's one of our UK garage secret weapons. Proper fuckin' beats, old school as fuck and jackin son! My only issue is the vocal, which i'm not into, a little too Craig David for my tastes, although it does have an element of sleaze. Check it though, this sound is back! FEEL DA FLAVA! DOWNLOAD

On May 13, 2012 the music world lost a giant - Donald "Duck" Dunn, bassist for Booker T. & The MG's, one of the greatest musical groups the world has ever known. Duck plays on some of my all time favorite recordings, not only with the MG's but also with Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Albert King, Elvis Presley and about a zillion others. Type in Duck Dunn discography into your favorite search engine if you have a few hours to kill to check out the full list. His playing defines "in the pocket" and his influence is massive on any [...]

How's your French? I watched this twice last night before going out - 1969 footage from a French documentary on the Stax and Muscle Shoals sound. The description bills its 11 minutes as featuring "Brook Benton & Booker T. & The MGs recording sessions and The The Mar-keys working out a horn arrangement" but what [...]

I must be dead. This must be heaven. Bedazzled just posted this literally a few minutes ago. Holy jesus...This is actually just as much, if nor more, Memphis/Stax stuff than Muscle Shoals, but who cares? This footage is priceless! And yes, Spike, that looks like Isaac Hayes on sax to me.
