I'm just about finished reading Mike Scott's memoir, Adventures of A Waterboy , and boy, was it a sorely needed shot in the arm to my reading habits. After getting bored with so many memoirs & biographies (between shitty editing & crappy writing & predictable story telling), Scott has renewed my faith in the genre. It's a quick yet compelling read. Scott is incredibly articula te, and really knows how to paint a picture. He obviously loves language, and has a [...]
Gauntlet Press has announced that they will publish a signed limited edition of the acclaimed first novel of Owen King : Double Feature. Here is a synopsis of the book: “Sam Dolan is a young man coming to terms with his life in the process and aftermath of making his first film. He has a difficult relationship with his father, B-movie actor Booth Dolan—a boisterous, opinionated, lying lothario whose screen legacy falls somewhere between cult hero and pathetic. Allie, Sam’s dearly departed mother, was a woman [...]
“Great music is about tension and release.” – Jimmy Page What a quote! What a fabulous statement, and one that sums up the musical output of the man, and a phrase that captures the pure essence of this book! Authored by Guitar World Magazine Editor-In-Chief, Brad Tolinski, Light & Shade: Conversations with Jimmy Page is an in depth and detailed account of the musical career of Jimmy Page, practically from the time that he picked up his first guitar to his most recent forays on the world stage as a British ambassador at the Olympic Games in China [...]
BY ANDREW HERTZBERG Two superficially different new novels -one a long realist Third World narrative and the other a short surrealist First World story-share a common theme of circularity. The heroine of Americanah goes on a global journey that starts and ends in Nigeria. Buria l is less about death than about the implied cycle of life. The former explores temporary absences; the latter examines the most permanent absence of all. Like many great existential works of fiction from Sartre's Nausea to Kundera's The Unbearable Lightness of [...]
I really wanted to give this book a glowing review. It was given to me by the singer of the band Runny, Brooklyn's most confusing punk band. He got a free copy and gleefully told me that I would hate it. I went into it with an open mind hoping to prove him wrong. Besides, I'm really too old to hate anything these days. Except for indie rock, of course. Right off the bat this book let me down. On the first page of the "proto metal" chapter, the authors give credit to Dave Davies of The [...]

Questlove’s Memoir is Out and Apparently It’s Pretty Great
Musical jack-of-all-trades Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson is usually pretty soft-spoken, but when he opens his mouth, he's almost always got something interesting to say. You can tell Questlove's got an insane amount of knowledge (I hate to break my rule of never quoting Mean Girls , but that really is probably why his hair is so big), and I imagine you'd learn a lot from a conversation with him. Fortunately, Questlove's given us the next best thing in the form of his memoir, Mo' Meta Blues: The World According to Questlove , which comes out today. According to Pitchfork [...]

In an exclusive excerpt from the new book Eric Clapton, Day by Day: The Early Years, 1963-1982, Marc Roberty takes us into the earliest days of Derek and the Dominoes - with the arrival of key collaborator Bobby Whitlock. All of this takes place before the arrival of Duane Allman, the doomed slide-guitar genius of Allman Brothers fame. It's even [...]

Maurice Sendak Google Doodle
Beloved children's author and illustrator Maurice Sendak gets the Google doodle treatment today on what would have been his 85th birthday. Sendak rose to widespread acclaim with his 1963 book "Where the Wild Things Are" and continued to produce work until his death in May 2012. The doodle starts by taking boyish hero Max through the land of the Wild Things and enters other familiar settings sprung from Sendak's imagination. A party of Sendak's characters gather around a cake for the the author and illustrator at the conclusion.
