Between "Atlas" hyping up the kids and a few guiding lights suggesting Mirrored is already on their year-end best-of lists, absorbing the influx of info for Battles can be difficult. While Brian Hollon flies quietly below the radar with a brand new EP, the four men of the former soldier on, date by date, hoping to win over the masses with their unique brand of futurist-pop. Exciting news on the Boom Bip front: from the masterful electro-head who brought us Blue Eyed In The Red Room (one of the best electro releases of 2005) comes the new Sacchrilege EP , a collection of five songs intended to shred eardrums and facilitate baby-making all over the world. The EP, which comes out on 12" vinyl and digital download on April 23rd, sees Bip wading into a heavier, more bass-driven sound than we've heard on his previous releases. Here's a taste of what's to come: [MP3] [...]
The first track from Gruff Rhys (Super Furries) and Boom Bip's project Neon Neon has been posted. Called "Trick for Treat" it features vocals from Har Mar Superstar, Naeem from Spank Rock and Gruff Rhys and is lot more electro than Boom Bip is known for (although closer to his upcoming Saccrelige EP). It leaves me salivating for more... Listen at Myspace . Tags: Neon Neon , Gruff Rhys , Boom Bip , Spank Rock , Har Mar SuperStar
A fresh release from the wonderfully eccentric emcee Busdriver, aka Regan Farquahar, hit the shelves today. Roadkill Overcoat (the prolific LA artists seventh release in six years!) comprises of twelve quite diverse numbers, each with their own unique individual charms. Production from Boom Bip and Nobody ensures captivating pads & melodies and solid beats are a standout feature on the album. As is Busdriver's idiosyncratic vocal style, which varies from rapid-fire 40-Rothmans-a-day Aesop Rock-ness on "Pompous Posies! Your Party's No Fun", to beautiful Andre 3000-style melodies in "Sun Shower". [...]

(photo by delarge ) Boom Bip is Echo Park resident (apparently - and disappointingly - nothing to do with Echo Beach, far away in time) Bryan Hollon. He submits a nice, spacious, airy reworking of No More Mosquitos for Four Tet's Remixed disc, and very pleasant it is too. Mr Hollon is more of a hip hop head in general, although this year's Blue Eyed In The Red Room seems to take a more varied, more eclectic approach - witness the MySpace tracks from the album to get a sense of that. Seems like Hollon [...]

motion under motion-shimmering: amaze at the too thin breaks, a wizard's unlifted wind, the gutteral goings on, dancing round a kingdom of compromise, etched always in the infirmary of years. From humble beginnings as a radio DJ who ran a small club night in Cincinnati, to album collaborations with rapper Doseone and acclaimed releases on Warp Records, Bryan Hollan's musical CV has been looking more impressive as time goes on. With his 2005 release 'Blue Eyed in the Red Room' he continued to prove his talent with an album of largely live instrumentation and no samples. The album opener 'Cimple' establishes the mood with swathing guitars and piano alongside electronic beats. The synth lead 'The Move' is not truly representative of the rest of the album while Gruff [...]
