Living for Live: Six Shows In Four Weeks

Living for Live: Six Shows In Four Weeks My recent arrival in Chicago has been beneficial for two reasons: 1) I have a fulfilling job, and 2) I get to a shit ton of rock shows. For example, over the course of the four weeks of October, I made it to six shows. No two shows were alike: I welcomed fresh-faced James Blake and Ty Segall; cheered for past-their prime Glenn Danzig, Smoking Popes and Frank Turner and turned Japanese with Boris. James Blake @ The Metro (9/29) September 29 was a very eventful night for Chicago's hipsters. Due to [...]

Live Review: Boris at Hollywood's El Rey Theatre (11/12)

Live Review: Boris at Hollywood's El Rey Theatre (11/12) Even by their tireless standards (they've released 17 albums in 15 years), 2011 has been a very busy year for Japanese noise-rockers Boris , with the release of three albums and a supporting world tour. Of the three albums the band has dropped this year, two dipped into Isn't Anything -era My Bloody Valentine noise-pop, mostly eschewing the heavy psychedelic drone of their extensive back-catalog for a more accessible sound. On the final date of their HOPE World Tour , Boris played to a mostly sold-out crowd at Hollywood's El Rey Theatre Saturday evening, with support coming [...]

[mp3] Boris: "Flare"

I liked the first track we heard from Boris' upcoming record New Album, but this really equalizes the scales. MP3: Boris - Flare Honestly if all of Boris' work sounded like this, I'd probably be happy never listening to them again. This sounds less like the Japanese acid metal gods we've come to enjoy and [...]

MP3: Boris “Flare” From Upcoming “New Album”

MP3: Boris “Flare” From Upcoming “New Album” Just over a week after catching this intriguing Japanese trio Boris , weave their mystical sound of multitudes of styles and genres at Fun Fun Fun Fest, the band releases the second track from their upcoming release aptly titled New Album. " Flare" follows the first single released which was titled "Spoon" and can be found on New Album released on limited edition vinyl and CD at independent retailers on Record Store Day: Black Friday Nov 25th and worldwide on December 6th. Still trying to wrap my head around this stuff, but it's fun [...]

"Flare" by Boris

I want to believe. I want to believe that Boris' third album of 2011 isn't two albums too many. Pitchfork gave "Spoon," the first track released from New Album (Yes, that's what the Japanese hard rockers are calling this new album), their best new music tag. But, I'd be hard pressed to believe anyone will bestow such honors on "Flare." Rolling Stone calls it frenetic . Frenetic, of course, is another way of saying a song has no direction. And direction is exactly what "Flare" lacks, as unnecessarily grandiose guitar melodies drop [...]

EYEHATEGOSLING

At this past weekend's FunFunFunFest in Austin, Texas, a heavy metal behemoth slayed all comers as far as garnering the positive headlines. No, I'm not talking about thrash legends Slayer, who closed out the fest with a brilliant set (review forthcoming) that made their Big 4 NY appearance look tame by comparison. I'm definitely not [...]

Fun Fun Fun Fest 2011 -- Day 3 pics (part 1) -- Slayer, Blonde Redhead, Kid Dynamite, Zero Boys, Boris & more

Fun Fun Fun Fest 2011 -- Day 3 pics (part 1) -- Slayer, Blonde Redhead, Kid Dynamite, Zero Boys, Boris & more by BBG My final day at Fun Fun Fun Fest 2011 ran the gamut from 90s-indie-worshippers Lemuria to the poppy-hardcore of Kid Dynamite , the Prince-clad hardcore of Ceremony to the glitchy dance of Flying Lotus , and the operatic/enigmatic Austra to the great Slayer . Of the bands that I was not familar with prior to that day (namely OBN IIIs and Les Butcherettes) OBN IIIs set was my favorite; high energy [...]

CRUSTCAKE PICKS: FUN FUN FUN FEST - SUNDAY

We realize that not everyone has the good fortune of living in the great state of Texas, but between SXSW, Chaos in Tejas, Rites of Darkness and Austin's anti-ACL, Fun Fun Fun Fest, we feel the Lone Star State has got the lock on kickass music festivals and and you're really missing out if you haven't made the trek down for at least one of them.If you're fortunate enough to make it to Austin this

Live Report: Boris, Asobi Seksu and Liturgy in NYC

Live Report: Boris, Asobi Seksu and Liturgy in NYC On October 27, Boris played Irving Plaza as part of their HOPE World Tour. The Japanese experimental-metal greats shared the stage with a pair of local bands: transcendental black metallists Liturgy and throwback shoegazers Asobi Seksu. Greg Cristman is a fantastic NY-based photographer whose work has been featured everywhere from Brooklyn Vegan to Rolling Stone . He shot the Manhattan stop of the HOPE tour for Invisible Oranges, and he shared with us some of his thoughts on the show, too. — Mike Nelson [...]

WQHS Interviews Nick Sylvester of Mr. Dream

WQHS Interviews Nick Sylvester of Mr. Dream This Friday, November 4, Brooklyn punk rockers Mr. Dream will take the stage at the First Unitarian Church playing songs from their new album, Trash Hit . After making their quick transition from the music critiquing world to performing, they're kicking off their Fall tour Friday night, opening for indie supergroup Mister Heavenly. WQHS DJ Aldrin Abastillas chats with drummer and producer Nick Sylvester. Aldrin Abastillas: Your band has a pretty interesting back story. Your members moved from writing about music to actually making music. What led you guys [...]

TVD Live: Boris at the Black Cat, 10/29

TVD Live: Boris at the Black Cat, 10/29 Tokyo-based Boris' English is not very expansive. When I saw them on their first American tour in 2006, they could barely muster a "Thank you!" after a song, and after five years and endless tours around the world, the only additonal phrase they seem to have learned in time for their show at the Black Cat on Saturday night was "We love you guys!" But no matter. We don't listen to Boris to hear them talk but to create and perform music, and that is something that they do very, very well. [...]

Fun Fun Fun Fest 6 : A Primer

Fun Fun Fun Fest 6 : A Primer Though unfairly saddled with playing Cindy to SXSW's Marcia and ACL's Jan, Fun Fun Fun Fest offers more music, comedy and garden-variety debauchery over a three-day period than you can shake a stick at. 2011 represents the 6th installment of this upstart festival, and if the schedule is to be believed, FFFF6 is shaping up to be one for the annals. 3-Day Passes and single day tickets are still available for a mere pittance, but if you can't make it, fear not. MOKB is sending an envoy to cover every last note, [...]

This Weekend's Concert Picks: Asobi Seksu + Boris at Union Transfer, G. Love And Special Sauce at Electric Factory

This Weekend's Concert Picks: Asobi Seksu + Boris at Union Transfer, G. Love And Special Sauce at Electric Factory Asobi Seksu FRIDAY, OCTOBER 28 Asobi Seksu—which means "playful sex" in Japanese—is aptly named. Pairing shoegaze inspired grunge-pop with the dynamic vocals of Yuki Chikudate (who slips effortlessly between falsetto, full-out belting, and simply speaking melodically), the band is edgy, harsh, and brisk, yet cloyingly catchy. (Or, in a phrase: playfully sexy.) Chikudate's lyrics are a mix of English and Japanese, which band mates James Hanna and Larry Gorman have encouraged since the group formed in 2004. This blend of language is a defining trait of the Asobi Seksu [...]

Boris Remix 12″ Coming Soon

Boris Remix 12″ Coming Soon Not your standard Boris release, this 123 features remixes of some of their recent tunes by Boris collaborator and synth player Kensuke Saito. We're including this record on the site because we're Boris completists, but based on the labels description of "definitely primed for the dance floor", this might not be well received by the average Boris fan. If you want to take a chance, you can preorder here for $16.
