A well-placed comma will always make a song title more impressive. I don't know why more bands don't use them. If musicians want to convince me that their songs are worth my times, they should insert more commas. Boris - Six, Three Times "Six, Three Times" is one of the coolest things I've heard this year, and I have absolutely no idea what they are singing about. I think I hear English. I'm going to assume it's a hymn to [...]

[ Photo Credit ] Detroit Rock City! Bondermania! I was clapping and cheering all night: in the supermarket reading scores on my phone, in my living room watching Pudge and Maggs pour it on and on the phone with my old man. When the BoSox go down there's only one thing to do: root against the Spanks. One thing's for sure, I'm not going to George Steinbrenner for advice on how to stretch my dollar. The Yankees payroll? $198.7 million. The Tigers payroll? $82.3 million. The highlight of the whole affair was [...]
Tormented By Blue, Aaron Drew Sometimes things feel so dislodged and buzzing that the very matter of me seems to defy gravity. A melting- but not a rooted, earth-bound melting. Sometimes I listen to encourage this. Sometimes I look to encourage this. Sometimes I want to lie on the floor of the gallery and stare into the vastness of [...]

Balance is a hard thing to achieve and I don't think I'm coming anywhere close to it at the moment. When I throw myself into my work (day job) then my photography suffers incredibly. Now I'm taking almost a roll of film a day but my work is just hideous. I'm happier this way around (obviously) but sometimes I wish there could be harmony! The rediscovery of the Demi is having an incredible impact on my photography work. I'd pushed it aside for the newer, shinier Leica but the Demi is a workhorse [...]

guantanamo bay prisoner "installed" in disneyland by banksy big day for new releases - even if most of them have been flitting about the internet for a minute now: tv on the radio - return to cookie mountain my (semi) early favorite for record of 2006. tv on the radio are the only pop band who [...]
Despite the fact that I will miss almost all of these shows I'm still going to tell you all what you should be doing if you're in New York this week. It's an excellent week full of fantastic live shows that you should not miss. I'm going to try to make it to two specific shows this week, but who knows if I'll be able to do that. Plus there's a couple of free shows this weekend I'd love to attend if work doesn't interfere. Anyway, make sure you're checking the regular sources because there's more going on than just [...]

(Photo via digital_freak ) Sometimes I have a yearning for guitars, LOUD guitars, and lots of feedback. Sometimes I need my ears to bleed and my innards to vibrate uncontrollably. Not many bands can pull this off, so I get very excited when I find one that can. Enter Boris. For those of you not familiar: Boris is a Japanese band, known to regularly switch musical genres between albums. Genres the band have played so far [...]

boris - woman on the screen #### couple of great new sites have come across the disco-not-disco radar the past few days. first up is tourfilter . using a user-friendly craigslist-esque layout, this site scans hundreds of live show listings daily creating a database that is searchable by both venue and act. two things really make this show stand out - first is that you can enter band names and you will automatically be reminded when they have a show coming up. ohmyrockness is excellent, but there are always those nights [...]

While I love Aquarius Records for their wonderful staff recommendations, I tend to glaze over whenever they ramble on about some Norwegian death metal band or one of their other bizarre sub-sub-sub-genre obsessions. One such act I'd been sleeping on is Boris — filed under "sludge / psych / doom / dirge / drone metal" by the heads at Aquarius. What a fool was I... Sure, they live up to "Japan's answer to the Melvins" (another Aquarius line) just fine, but stashed between the rabid, big bully numbers sounds are careful, almost vulnerable, epics that build on the [...]

This was far from easy and this list at one point or another had the likes of Tool, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Black Keys, Thom Yorke, Hot Chip, and Arctic Monkeys. I whittled it down from the list that I started on my flight out to California last week and then I sat on it. Came back to it. Changed it. And this morning I finalized it. Complete with B-sides. [10] MP3: Wilderness - "Monumental" | "Emergency" We got turned on by 1000yregg over at Kushi Tan who [...]
“Some more than others.†-- Spike on the extent to which humans are human "It scared me." -- Tom on his favorite horror film, Monsters, Inc. "You’re a gross person and I kinda want nothing to do with with you." -- Tom on lighthearted family prankster Chad Shackleford "Yo, John Scharpling, man, what is a podcast, man?" -- Fred, not a subscriber, but still a filthy junkie "Oh, Hasselhoff, don't do it." -- Tom, trying to avoid a clean sweep on America's Got Talent [...]

"Of all the enemies to public liberty war is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded, because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes; and armies, and debts, and taxes are the known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few. No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare." -James Madison, at 01:02:11 When, however, neither the elements of the offense nor the range of permissible punishments is [...]
