Teen Daze has long been one of our favorite producers. His remix of Toro Y Moi's essential track Still Sound (get it here) remains regularly on loop, and his second full-length record The Inner Mansions , released last year, continued his consistently incredible work. Now the Canadian feel-good, dreamwave aficionado has released an amazing remix through Vagrant Records of Wake Owl's Wild Country , a combination we could previously only have dreamt of. The styles of each compliment one another fantastically, with Wake Owl's folk aesthetics washed over by the euphoric soundscapes of Teen Daze. The [...]

Though the FADER does not empirically rank our favorite releases, the year-end battle between album heavyweights rages in our brains like everyone else’s. But we’re talkers, prone to changing our mind and always searching for ... read more

... 18. Kendrick Lamar // good kid, m.A.A.d city [ Interscope Records ] Like several other albums on this list, I listened to good kid, m.A.A.d city about five times through before it really started to click with me. It seemed to be the album that everyone agreed on this year and it was paraded around all over the internet from the second it dropped. My initial gut reaction to that sort of hype is usually pretty contrarian (I must [...]
Born Gold, Cecil Frena's latest reincarnation of Gobble Gobble, blends digitally-generated vocal techniques with odd, 808-driven prog-electro-pop, managing to neither offend or gratify. 05_-_2_against_silence.mp3 [...]
What's better than bringing together six awesome indie bands? Well, how about unlimited beer tasting from about 12 microbreweries? On Saturday, The Bay Bridged and SF Brewers Guild are coming together to present a live event at Public Works, including Bear in Heaven, Sonny & The Sunsets, Born Gold, Blasted Canyons, James & Evander, and Trails and Ways. Tickets are $50 in advance , or $60 at the door. That's about an average price for a beer festival, so the bands are a pretty sweet added bonus. So in case you aren't familiar with them, [...]

Born Gold is all set to perform at The Bay Brewed 2012 this Saturday as part of a California mini-tour, and we couldn't be more excited. Although the Edmonton-born experimental pop act is constantly evolving, project mastermind Cecil Frena is always behind the controls. Formerly known as GOBBLE GOBBLE, the project's first singles "Lawn Knives" and "Wrinklecarver" quickly caught the attention of the Internet in 2010 as the catchy, glitchy hyper-pop anthems burrowed deep beneath the skin and galvanized the bloodstream. As former band members ventured off to [...]

Mixtape: The Sounds of The Bay Brewed 2012 (Podcast #292) On Saturday, December 1st, we're proud to be throwing San Francisco’s only rock and roll beer festival, The Bay Brewed 2012 , where we'll be taking over Public Works for a full afternoon of tasty craft brews and great indie music. It's a can't-miss festival featuring music performances by Bear in Heaven , Sonny & the Sunsets , Born Gold , Blasted Canyons [...]
Born Gold: Little Sleepwalker

Photo by Marc Rimmer Last September, madcap electro-pop experimentalist Cecil Frena took a handful of songs that had been circulating around the web under the guise of his project GOBBLE GOBBLE and released them, along with a batch of new tracks, under the name Born Gold. The resulting album, Bodysongs , was one of the most furiously engaging and criminally overlooked debuts of 2011. One year later, we contacted Frena to ask about his creative process, his unique live performances, and Born Gold's new record, Little Sleepwalker , [...]
As Purity Ring explode into the upper echelon of attention-grabbing indie bands, one often wonders where in the hell their eccentric blend of chopped hip-hop beats, ethereal vocals, and clustering electronic compositions came from. That duo of Corin Roddick and Megan James once worked with Cecil Frena under the name Gobble Gobble, together producing a Jamie Stewart-ian chop-and-howl electro-pop intensity. As Purity Ring formed, Frena changed his project name to Born Gold , and the two outlets began moving into similar territory. On his second album under the name, Little Sleepwalker , Born Gold skirts the instant success [...]

Pop music is changing, and it's getting really interesting to watch. When indie pop started going mainstream, we watched it grow fangs. Now it's growing extra arms and shit, and it seems like a perfect time for Born Gold to steal a piece of the spotlight with his glitchy, hyper, sugary, and masterfully executed electronic pop. Following up the excellent Bodysongs , Born Gold's Little Sleepwalker is due out on October 23. Grab a couple tracks below.

As already observed previously and by others , Born Gold 's forthcoming work Little Sleepwalker is a step away from the menacing, literally mind-boggling sonic thunderstorm of the project's previous debut effort Bodysounds , embracing more accessible pop vibes to a degree hitherto unknown - without, however, in any way abandoning the signature weirdness that makes Cecil Frena's post- Gobble Gobble venture so convincing and singular. The single “Ferocious Body/Against Silence” is a striking instance of that revamped approach, still emphatically mysterious and intricately textured yet showcasing a [...]

by Tiana Feng I'm really excited for Born Gold's Little Sleepwalker out October 23rd. Here are two more tracks from the album Ferocious Body and Against Silence that might as well be one song because they flow right into each other. Both provide such charming soundscapes that I can't stop playing them on loop.
In a post-Purity Ring world, Cecil Frena bka Born Gold’s music will probably go over pretty well. This isn't a bad thing by any means. It's more like Frena is using a sound that incorporates ... read more

Some brand spanking new shit from Born Gold. Liking this new experimental as FUCK track "Sky Bicycle" a whole lot! Sounds crystal clear especially on a handful of \\\\ street candy. It's been a year since the release of the Bodysongs album and if this new track is any indication as to where BG is headed, then I'm in. They don't need to re-visit their old sshit; they need to forge ahead with this new sound. The old sound is too Nickelodeon. The new sound is more on par with Purity Ring. Keep forging ahead my lovely Bitches...you [...]

The one and only Cecil Frena is back on the face of the earth with a brand new album under his moniker (and long-standing NFOP favourite) Born Gold . With the first single out for the public ear entitled "Sky Bicycle", Frena takes a different path from his terror pop effort Bodysongs , but with the intellectual hooks and strange, however supremely precice production intact. Many more surprises await as Little Sleepwalker drops on October 23rd via audraglint , so ladies and gentlemen, keep your ears prepared.
