![[Playlist] The Restaurant – Opening Hours](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3901408_lg.jpg)
So, over the past couple months I have been attempting to learn how to run a restaurant. On my parade through the many positions and shifts that happen on a daily basis, I have noticed a variety of musical themes to the day. By far my favourite so far has been the first few hours that you have before the doors are unlocked in the morning. Durnig this time there is a lot of paperwork done, money counted, payroll entered and most of all, A LOT of coffee/espresso/cappuccino/etc consumed. To balance out the caffeine highs, I have turned to my [...]
Ever get the feeling that you need to yelp very loudly in the intro of your song, but don't because it would sound like shit? Canadian indie band Born Ruffians had the same idea, only when they did it, it sounded awesome. The yelps really do add something to the track Barnacle Goose, a feeling of youth that simply would not exist without the slightly off beat but oh so perfectly timed yells/strums in the first bit of the song. This is the feeling I get that keeps me listening to Born Ruffians - the lead singers voice emits an [...]

David Black That Ryan Adams' retirement from music - declared at the start of 2009 as a result of personal, medical, and industry factors - wouldn't last was never in question. You don't go from being as prolific as he had been over the past decade and a half to radio silence without a relapse or two. That said, he made a pretty good go of it for a while, busying himself with writing and being Mr. Mandy Moore. By early 2010, however, he was clearly ready to get back to making music [...]

Vancouver pop band Said the Whale have had a pretty amazing 2011. In March, they won the Juno Award for New Group of the Year . Then, in July, they debuted a rollicking tour documentary on Canada's CBC network . Early next month, they'll cap off their monumental year with the release of a new EP, New Brighton . The four-track effort is the first new music from the band since their 2009 full-length, Islands Disappear . For a sense of the band's catchy, nuanced sound, CoS has an exclusive first [...]
CBC Radio 3 Track of the Day. Guest Hosts, Aron D'alesio and John Smith of Young Rival: "We love this song. We love watching them play it night after night. It has a really nice build to it and we hope you enjoy it."

Tweet Silver Firs are yet to announce a release date for their forthcoming album but have given us a sweet song with " Away You Go " as the first taste of what is coming. As well as this being the first release from the upcoming album it is the first we are hearing from the band at all. Yet the Silver Firs aren't exactly a new band but instead merely a transformation of their former selves as Must [...]

Jonathan Taggart As one of the most social media-savvy musicians in the country, it's not unreasonable to say that Dan Mangan reads his own press and so he's probably seen the phrases "everyman", "coffee shop", "roots-rock" and variants thereof in regards to his breakout 2009 record Nice, Nice, Very Nice many, many times. And while these descriptors were usually meant in most complimentary ways - one does't make the Polaris shortlist on the back of negative press - his just-released follow-up Oh Fortune [...]
![GunFight! – Frontier Land [Album]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3744347_lg.jpg)
There are some dirty things in Bushwick but then there are charming things like GunFight! . Originally from Boston, GunFight! is an infectious rock band with the energy of a five-year-old boy and his first toy motorbike. The southern punk howls from Drew bounce on top of the band's dynamic country and rock spirit. These variations create something that we love from indie music. Frontier Land is GunFight!'s latest work and here are my personal favorites. Track 2. "All You Need" is animated with Dominic's fast-paced drumming and Drew's twangy [...]

I am getting a little overwhelmed by this whole moving thing. Maybe some of these songs will help. Take twice per day for the next 3 months. In the end, how can you not be excited to move around Western Canada with a beautiful lady? (see above...and please take note of the classy, english, drinking pinky) Free mp3: Little Red - Rock It Free mp3: Dr Dog - Heart It Races (Architecture in Helsinki cover) [...]

Keith Klenowski Just to be clear: filling Massey Hall for two nights in a row is no mean feat. Not many bands can do it once, let alone twice, but when The National did just that last June in support of their breakout album High Violet , it felt like an arrival - the best and most natural setting for a band that had graduated from the bar circuit and were taking their rightful place in the city's most hallowed room, hopefully for years to come. [...]

Saturday... all day without a post, and then I realized that I only have 11 days to get five more mixes up, so here it is #17. Mixed on a flight between Houston and Charlotte. This, is Mont Saint Michel. Which, thanks to Rick Steves, the Fabio of travel, is one of most incredible things I've seen all month. If you're intuitive, this gives away a simple and very embarrassing fact: that given all the possible things I could be doing in life, much less the television shows I could [...]
It's almost hard to believe that it is summer here in northern California and the Pacific Northwest, because it has been unusually cool, and even rained (which almost never happens in the Bay Area during summer). One of the best things about summer is taking trips to the beach. We're blessed with being only a [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe
It's almost hard to believe that it is summer here in northern California and the Pacific Northwest over the past week. But the unusually cooler temperatures, and even rain (which is almost non-existent in California in summer). Nevertheless, the rest of the country is enjoying the summer, and it'll soon be returning to these parts. [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe
![[Album Review/Listen] – Tapes 'n Tapes – "Outside"](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3580513_lg.jpg)
Tweet Buy the album from Amazon - Vinyl / MP3 / CD Tapes 'n Tapes have had a strange journey so far - they began as a buzz band with hype pumped full of saline solution by Pitchfork and an appearance at SXSW. Then they signed to XL Recordings and released a second album, which didn't seem to scratch the same itch. When a band's career explodes at an [...]

It's time for our annual Summer Edition of Commercial Watch , where I again highlight some of the songs that those indie-saavy marketing folks are harvesting for mass consumption. Since I realize most of you are the Hulu / DVR / next-day-on-youtube type, you've probably been blissfully unaware of the beer, car, and shoe ads that have been lighting up TV screens, so I've dug up some of the best ones for you. Lucky for you, the past few months have seen a surplus in indie music in commercials so there's quite a bit more ads then here I [...]

Awesome, Awesome, Awesome. Any Joe Blow music blogger can throw together a playlist of decent songs (believe me, I have tried one too many times). Rarely am I high-fiving strangers or chest-bumping my ladyfriend when a new one pops up on the interweb...unless of course if it comes from a select few of my favourite music junkies. We have already seen a couple from I am Friends, You are Fuel and Music For Ants recently...stepping into the spotlight today is the newest release from Canadian superbloggers, Ca Va Cool . So good! Get it [...]
