Photo By Annie Gunn Bosque Brown's smoky sophomore release, Baby, comes at us with full instrumental force, straight out of Denton, Texas. Like their previous releases, Baby showcases lead singer Mara Miller's vocals akin to Samantha Crain or a young Karin Bergquist (of Over the Rhine). Harboring an impressive use of percussion, Baby also lets us in on a few reverberating a capella tracks which are just the ever-sweetening cherry on the top of an alt-blues cake. Yum. mp3: Went Walking

Denton, Texas' Bosque Brown have been working on their sophomore release, Baby , for the last 15 months and are now set to release it this March. This extensive time to record and get things right is in stark contrast to the expediency with with their debut and follow-up EP were created. The reports also indicate more expansive instrumentation, but with a focus on lead singer, Mara Miller's vocals. Producer Chris Flemmons of the Baptist Generals was brought in help [...]

I mentioned the other day that Bosque Brown has been working on her upcoming record, Baby , for the past 15 months, but she also found time to contribute this starkly stunning rendition of " Silent Night " to I'll Stay 'til After Christmas , a new iTunes-only compilation benefiting Amnesty International . Thanks to Forcefield , who curated the comp, for hooking us up with this track to give away for Christmas: mp3: [...]

Bosque Brown have been quietly working on their sophomore full-length for the past 15 months with producer Chris Flemmons (Baptist Generals) in Denton, TX. Baby features a fuller sound and more expansive instrumentation than previous releases. "Baby" is out on March the third but you can enjoy a nice little sample right now. Sure, some other blogs have already beat me to the punch on this one today--shocking, but sometimes here at DC9 we're not just sitting at our computer, refreshing our email inboxes over and over--but,... Continue reading "Bonus MP3: Bosque Brown -- "Went Walking"" >

Bosque Brown "Went Walking" - mp3 While our time is relatively brief this morning, not to mention we are still recovering from a marathon 48 hours of working/shows, we had to share this new track with you from Bosque Brown. Bosque Brown is a vehicle for lead singer Mara Miller, yet their sophomore effort Baby coming in March, promises lusher arrangements and a more fleshed-out, full-band approach. Definitely looking forward to hearing more from this record. Bosque Brown's debut record Plays Mara Lee Miller [...]

It's been entirely too long since we heard from Fort Worth's Mara Lee Miller , aka Bosque Brown . However, we recently received word that the new record she's been working on for the past 15 months in Denton, entitled Baby , will be released in March via Burnt Toast Vinyl . Miller's fragile, uniquely arresting voice -- think Cat Power meets Joanna Newsom, only more consistently heartrending -- recalls another era on this beautiful updated version of " Went Walking ," the first track to surface from the new [...]
Christmas music has always been a guilty pleasure of mine, so each year I'm always excited to see what bands will cover traditional yuletide tunes, and which will create some of their own. The turnout has hardly been disappointing - the season's generated such gems like "Candy Cane Children" by the White Stripes and The [...]
The weather outside is weather, which means, yep, we're being absolutely inundated with Christmas albums and compilations here at DC9 HQ. Anyone want not one, but two brand-new Brian Setzer Orchestra... Continue reading "My Brightest, Brownest Christmas Compilation" >

This week, we brought you a review of Blackbird Harmony 's second record, Hardwood Exits , a collection of dark country noir from local songwriter Evan Birdsong, recorded by Eleven Hundred Springs ' Steve Berg in Garland. (Before you scoff, just remember: Red Headed Stranger was also recorded in Garland, which bests just about any album ever recorded in Dallas proper, save maybe the works of Robert Johnson.) The record as a whole is a strong one, and the lonely shuffle of "Caution & Dispatch" is [...]

There are some performers I have every intention of writing about each and every release they put out. Bosque Brown is one. I first wrote about her here with the release of her debut record Bosque Brown Plays Mara Lee Miller . Her new record, Cerro Verde , is a one sided lp that deals with the flood caused by Hurrican Katrina and it's aftermath on her family. As far as I can tell this is an actual piece of vinyl, [...]

Often when you get a new record, comparisons immediately hit. Other times, you are mesmerized and it takes days to set bearings for the sound. Bosque Brown 's Plays Mara Lee Miller was initially a mystery. After listening to the voice and lyric content for a week, my bearings are set. There is a lot of talk around the indie rock scene of the relationship between Joanna Newsom and SMOG 's Bill Callahan. Rarely does the discussion of offspring come about. However, if I had to guess what their talent [...]
