You might have heard that all three Dicks are in town; James arrived in beautiful and historic Cleveland this afternoon, rolled over to Kevin's house and we had the first face-to-face meeting of the minds in a good long while. Our friendly get together quickly devolved into a moderately truculent discussion of our favorite albums of the quickly passing year, with each of us vociferously defending our choices as the other two shot us down. (Somebody said something about avoiding triumvirates, right?) Happily, there's something to be said for being forced to defend your opinions. Out of the dissension was [...]

Over the last week, I've been listening carefully to Robert Pollard 's latest CD from his new recording band Boston Spaceships - The Planets are Blasted . By carefully, I mean taking note of chord changes, instrumentation, song structure, melodies, etc. Because otherwise it all washes over me in one big melodic rockin' roar, as Pollard's best stuff has done to me over the last 13 years... Too often lately, (esp with children in the mix), listening to music becomes a background activity - it plays, and I take note of hooks and choruses, [...]

Photography by Tsuru --> print available here ! Like I mentioned yesterday, and what Our Society members & our FACEBOOK friends already had dibs/access/etc to since Saturday, I had a little sumfin special a-brewin' for ya! And, well, here it is! A wonderful whopping 33 songs (well, 30 plus part of 1 split into 3, carry the four, take the squar root or something), from one hell of a fun year so far, i.e. nuffin but oh-niners (I hope, never know... those 'oh-eighters' can be pretty sneaky sometimes)! [...]

There was a lot of quality in the air last week, but Drake honed in the latest from the queen of the indie rock scene, Neko Case , and ex-GBV front man, Bob Pollard (a record whose release I wasn't even aware of, I must admit). It's a week later and we now know that the Neko record was a smash, cracking no. 3 on the Billboard Top 200 Album chart (44,000 units sold) and landing at no. 1 on the Billboard Top Independent Albums chart, making it the most successful independent release of our [...]

Ryan(StopMe): I'm still listening to that N.A.S.A album, except now every track is sounding like a classic I've known for years! So once again, click here to get yourself a copy (With an artwork sanitising sticker plastered over the top, if it's like mine). Here are the ten best non-N.A.S.A related tracks from this week: Adam Lipman's 'Her Life Under Our Roof' is a sparsely arranged delicate flower of lo-fi acoustic sorrow. Your lip will be wobbling within seconds of putting it on. [...]

Some would have you believe there's just one release this week, but there is so much more than just what's playing on Letterman . New releases from Neko Case and Boston Spaceships hold most of my interest, but there's also fine releases from Bell X1 , Marissa Nadler , The Boy Least Likely To , Wild Light , Angus and Julia Stone , and the soundtrack and score to Watchmen (which I'll hopefully have something more on tomorrow). Playlist: [...]

Lots of great stuff this week, as the new album Middle Cyclone from Neko Case certainly comes out on top with having both excellent songs and equally good cover art. Honestly, she could release an album of her just reading from a phone book and I would probably buy it. I'm sure we can all agree on this one. A couple of other albums that I would personally recommend have been released digitally on iTunes: The Boy Least Likely To's The Law Of The Playground and Fanfarlo's [...]

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars Ohh Bobbie, how we love your Miller Lite infused high-kicks. How we love walking into your shows dry and leaving sopping wet from not only our own but other peoples body sweat. How we love being able to throw beers in the air at innocent by-standers and not give a shit. Above all else Bobbie, we love your unmatched creative output of material. Slurrrrrp. Boston Spaceships return with Planets Are Blasted only 5 months after their first LP Brown [...]

Being freshly unemployed, I now have more time to devote to I Rock Cleveland. That's good news for you. Starting today, I'm going to work my way through the big stack of cds which have been collecting on my coffee table and all those new releases which are taking up hard drive space on the rock machine. These reviews may be a little more informal than usual, but don't worry. That won't stop me from putting a number on each and every one of them. Enjoy. Boston [...]
I might like The Planets Are Blasted , the sophomore release from Boston Spaceships , more than I should because I'm a Robert Pollard fanboy. But oh well. So be it. It's a good record. Maybe more words than this are in order. But oh well. Boston Spaceships - Big O Gets an Earful
Tommy Keene has been playing guitar hero for more than a quarter-century, both on his power-pop solo albums (his latest is In The Late Bright, out this week) and as a sideman for Robert Pollard and Paul Westerberg. Keene, apparently weary of all the critical acclaim, agreed to dole out some of his own praise. [...]

What better way to end a pretty great week than by throwing a little Robert Pollard out to the masses. This tune comes via his new band Boston Spaceships , who are set to release their new album, The Planets are Blasted on Guided by Voices, Inc. February 27th, but the album is already available for digital download. Enjoy this tune; enjoy your weekend. Download: Boston Spaceships - Big O Gets an Earful [MP3]

Any discussion of white boys playing the blues generally has to involve a purist going on about how “derivative” or “inauthentic” it is with frequent references to long-dead always obscure bluesmen with claims that they were the originals. But, once you face the reality that everything and everyone is somehow a product of influences and predecessors, the argument fizzles. Just bring up the fact that Wallace Willis, a Native American, wrote Swing Low, Sweet Chariot back in the mid 19 th century and then walk [...]
