>> Stricken City 's forthcoming second single "Lost Art" reminds us of a charming blend of Haircut 100 's new wave pop and Kiss Me Deadly 's dancable indie tunes. The track has a bouncy rhythm, plucky bass rides high in the mix and singer Rebekah Raa's clear, bright voice recalls that of Bow Wow Wow fronter Annabella Lwin. Blue Flowers Records will issue the London-based quartet's single -- which will be backed with a new version of the track "The Traveler" -- in the U.K. Nov. 17. Stricken City 's debut single "Tak [...]

Bow Wow Wow : W.O.R.K. (N.O. Nah No No My Daddy Don't) Extended Version [ purchase ] Besides the Sex Pistols, if Malcolm McLaren ever stole brought anything to Pop music, it was the Burundi Beat. One of his bands, Bow Wow Wow , used it to excellent result in W.O.R.K. (N.O. Nah No No My Daddy Don't). The group was fronted by 14-year-old Annabella Lwin, who was discovered working in a launderette by a friend of McLaren's. In W.O.R.K., Annabella sings [...]

Ponytail Genre: Pop From: Baltimore, Maryland United States Baltimore quartet Ponytail are well known on the local scene for their ground shaking, adrenalin fueled racket and their rattling, rousing, feel good punky pop is coming your way. The band will be releasing their new album 'Ice Cream Spiritual' in June and it's a corker. [...]
( BACK TO PART ONE ) [Okay, fuck it. Graceland , which should be at the end of this entry, will just have to be the next one. For now, this:] "At the end of one show, two men come to see me. I can tell right away by their Dutch looks, and by the way they look at me as if they own me, that they are Afrikaners. The two men from South Africa do not seem happy. One of them says, 'We came here because we thought we'd hear music [...]

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. Not simply because, to paraphrase H2O , we get to "eat like it's for charity!" but because I think it's a good thing to have at least one day a year whose stated purpose is being thankful. Certainly, there are opportunities almost every day to be thankful for what we have, what inspires us and why we keep going but to have a single day where, ostensibly, the entire United States focuses on this activity is pretty awe-inspiring. There's a lot of stuff I'm thankful for that I'm [...]
Another song that's somehow become a retroactive hit 25 years after it floundered in the lower half of the Hot 100 is Bow Wow Wow's "I Want Candy". Long-time readers of Lit80s know how I love to rant about songs like this that everyone today seems to know and love, but at the time were unjustly ignored and sneered at (see also, "I Melt With You", Alphaville's "Forever Young", blah blah). "I Want Candy" is another sterling example of this rewriting of pop history - as much as you hear it on flashback radio today, you'd think it was in [...]
First and foremost, thanks to everyone who sent in donations at my earlier request. They are, of course, very appreciated. Strangely, despite getting an e-mail from my web host the other day telling me I had to renew everything, after logging into my account, I see that I actually have until April to renew. Odd, that. Regardless, in April I'm sure I would have come begging, but now I shouldn't have to, as I've come relatively close to my goal. The second thanks of the night (or, more accurately, morning) goes to my always [...]
I really dislike Malcolm McLaren. He's despicable, vile, and most importantly a manipulative greedy bastard. He was fake. He manufactured images for monetary profit. He valued integrity less than the money from last week's paycheque (I didn't get one). He was a businessman and capitalist, not an independent artistic producer. He destroyed punk's primary values in the way he ran the Sex Pistols. When you allow the shroud of controversy to clear though, he's quite an impressive man. Following the Sex Pistols bust-up, he put his guile to use and took on a new project. Bow Wow Wow [...]
Not much to report today. I've seriously got a serious case of the Friday afternoon sleepies. Oh, wait, yes -- how did I miss that Kill Rock Stars' Slim Moon is moving over to do A&R for ... Nonesuch ? And that KRS is shuttering 5 Rue Christine , the label with the best logo ever -- not to mention a killer roster? Word is that the 5RC crowd will be absorbed into KRS -- I certainly hope no-one ends up homeless! Also, what's gonna happen to the Kill Rock Stars book club? I have a feeling [...]

Soundtracks have always been of the upmost importance to Sofia Coppola's films ( The Virgin Suicides , Lost in Translation ) so it should come as no surprise that for her latest, Marie Antoinette , it is a (like it or not) driving force. When I first saw the first trailer for the film featuring New Order's "Ceremony," I have to admit, it felt a bit jarring and out of place. But taking the project as a whole, the marriage of [...]

Sofia Coppola's soundtrack for Lost In Translation was one of my favourite soundtracks in recent years. It managed to assemble the perfect mix of melancholy pop songs and lush instrumentals, anchored by a handful of original compositions by ex-My Bloody Valentine frontman Kevin Shields. Not only are the songs great individually, but together they completely capture the mood of the film. Coppola's newest movie Marie-Antoinette opens this weekend, and the soundtrack looks to be another great collection. This time around there is a new wave theme, with songs by bands like New Order, The [...]

I'd just like to take a moment to mourn the passing of the "Fun Size" candy bar as we know it. With Halloween coming, we picked up two large bags of chocolate delicacies at Sam's Club last weekend, in preparation for the costumed masses that happily descend on our house in suburbia. Now, I may (or may not) have opened said bag of candy in advance and behind closed doors, you know, just to sample the wares and make sure nothing is poisoned. I was shocked and chagrined to see that fun is apparently getting smaller, [...]
I'm a Rock'n'Roll Puppet Bow Wow Wow was the next Malcolm Maclaren creation shortly after the implosion of the Sex Pistols. Scavenging the Ants from Adam, and a fourteen-year old Burmese immigrant theorhetically found singing in her parents Launderette, Bow Wow Wow were a quick flame-out despite putting on an astounding live show. They were perhaps a bit prematurely self referential. Jungle Boy They have a MySpace with a Smiths cover
We're big fans of Sofia Coppola's consistent coaxing of soundtrack contributions from Kevin Shields, and ever since the release of the Marie Antoinette soundtracklisting, this has been the only song that's mattered. Bow Wow Wow â€" "I Want Candy" (Kevin...
this picture landed in my inbox late last night. it's my dad. and he flew out to burning man this morning. he wanted to know what i thought of his vest. hmmm. so, if you're going to burning man stop by and say hello to him. he'll be in the giant geodesic domes of "the root society". here's a description of his camp from the burning man main page: ROOT SOCIETY The Root of all....all things above

I have said it before and I will say it again, I Love The 80's. It was such a unique time in music. The bands that formed in the 80's are one of the main inspirations for the indie music we listen to today. I am going to attempt to post up ten tracks from bands that formed during specific years in the 80's. The first is bands who formed in the year 1980. I specifically avoided well known bands (for the most part), for instance in 1980 we had the birth [...]
