We're once again joining forces with the fine folks that make up the WUD Music Committee by bringing MoB favorites the Bowerbirds to the University of Wisconsin's Der Rathskeller on Friday, March 27th . The Bowerbirds' Hymn For a Dark Horse was one of our favorite records of 2007 . This is another free show that includes support from Eau Claire's Amble Down Records : The Daredevil Christopher Wright and The Wars of 1812 . Everything [...]

Rub your eyes and nurse your Valentine's Day hangover with two mixes from When You Awake , full of songs that "represent that warm feeling you get when you wake up in your lover's arms" ( which makes me think of this , but hey ). Bands like Vetiver, Bowerbirds, Hymns, Dr. Dog and Langhorne Slim all selected tunes for the compilations, as well as some of your favorite bloggers. Check out their choices and two full mixes here . The Ship Song (live at [...]

Ingrid Z Those who sought to ride out the global recession by investing their money in Patrick Wolf should be pleased - the project has already yielded dividends! What had originally been intended to be a double album entitled Battle will now instead be two single-length albums entitled The Bachelor and The Conqueror . In an interview with Spinner , Wolf describes the differences between the two as follows - " The Bachelor [has themes of] loneliness, hedonism, depression and melancholy, the second album [...]

Hey, hope everyone is doing well! We have more music features on the way soon, but in the meantime, I thought I'd share this New York Times article that shows how a Martin guitar is made. The C.F. Martin Company has been producing guitars since 1833 and is considered one of the best guitar manufacturers in the world. It's a pretty cool process that I think you would appreciate, especially if you play the guitar. I'm a Breedlove man myself-and am still saving up for that $6,000 Jeff Tweedy Breedlove Guitar. Song played [...]
Two show announcements I saw over the weekend: Sparse-folkies The Bowerbirds and spazz-pop kids the Spinto Band will be playing at the Billiken Club on March 30 and 31, respectively. Cleveland folkish... Continue reading "Dreadful Yawns, Bowerbirds, Spinto Band Confirmed for Billiken Club" >

I tolds ya I would be back with some more various songs, loosely threaded together by some sort of "themed post". I won't let you down today folks. More good ones available below for consumption. Various Artists playlist part 2: "River of Dirt" by Marissa Nadler (new track from the upcoming release "Little Hells") "A Christmas Dream" by Palace_Hotel (NOT Will Oldham, but still great lazy alt-country) "A Mother's Wish" by novemthree (delicate lo-fi goodness) "Blood Bank" by Bon Iver [...]

NC State's college radio station WKNC 88.1 FM will hold its sixth annual Double Barrel Benefit concert Friday, Feb. 6 and Saturday, Feb. 7 at The Pour House in Raleigh, NC. The lineups for each night are excellent, highlighted by a set from Polvo on Saturday night. Friday night features performances by Lonnie Walker , Lost in the Trees , Schooner , and Bowerbirds . Saturday night features Polvo as the event's headliner, with support from Birds of Avalon , Violet Vector and the Lovely Lovelies [...]

Sometimes bands, songs and albums just won't leave you alone. You misplace that vinyl in your parent's attic, a cassette in your younger sister's car or a CD at a party but for some reason they come back like a George A. Romero zombie. Well that's What's On The HiFi Back Again is about . Along with King, Echo and the Bunnymen and Depeche Mode came a dark clandestine sound during the early 1980's and that sound was-Hey Now-The Sisters of Mercy! Begun [...]
In September 2007, a US company gave Vincent Moon a plane ticket to New York, to film bands in the Lower East Side for a website. But Moon filmed more than needed : in the van that carried the bands around the neighbourhood, he asked for a song every time, to every band. We kinda put those videos on a back shelf for some time. Then, we decided to dust them out of our hard drives, for the new year. Ten videos, all downloadable, with the mp3s too, everything gathered in a little compilation . [...]

So, we are getting tired of all this new music, and starting to listen to some old stuff again. But that doesn't stop me from guiding you through my 50 best records of this year. The sequel, starting with number 40 40. Turner Cody - First Light ( B.Y Records ) Sounds Like: Born too late, but okay, we can still sing along with your (anti)folk songs; Benji Cossa [...]
My grandmother is a sweet, plump, Belgian grandmother, the kind of grandmother who makes you food and then tells dirty jokes, and then giggles hysterically. She always sang during my childhood, probably little Belgian folk songs and French cabaret-type songs. My mother and her still like to duet, singing "Two White Doves," and while I always cringe at family reunions sitting through it, my adulthood has provided me with enough context to appreciate it. It's funny how much music nowadays reminds me of my Meme (that's what we call my grandma - pronounced May-May). Sometimes I find music that sounds [...]

It took me a while, too long I'll admit, to get into Bowerbirds . But, like all good things in my life, once I'm into them, I'm way into them. So, I didn't go through my Bowerbirds phase when their brilliant debut record, Hymns for a Dark Horse , was released last year; didn't fawn over them (or, sadly, even mention them) on my best-of 2007 year-end records post; didn't notice all the beauty waiting to be found. No, instead I did what a lot of musical bloggers end [...]

Lookee here at my picks for keeping yourself out of trouble this week: Calexico w. Calexico's Myspace Bowerbirds' Myspace M83, Nov. 20th, The Opera House The latest musical export from France, M83 will [...]

Baltimore has some sweet shows tonight! At the Talking Head Brightblack Morning Light performs with Fursaxa and Zomes opening. At the Ottobar the Oranges Band are performing for a limited edition album pre release show with Gary B and the Notions and Deleted Scenes opening. Down in DC The Spinto takes the stage at the Black Cat with one of our favorites, Middle Distance Runner, and Title Tracks opening. It's a mad house up in Philly first with Diplo, Abe Vigoda, No Age, Boy 8 Bit, and Telepathe performing at the Starlight Ballroom [...]

After looking through the wikipedia entry for ' bowerbird ' I can't say that I see anything remarkable about the bird, but, luckily for the band they are much more... markable... wow... good one Rob... eloquent ... very eloquent... good intro... I came across Bowerbirds through a Take Away Show via La Blogotheque probably, say, six months ago and promptly forgot about them until I was puttering around on La Blogotheque last week. I picked up their album Hymns for a Dark Horse , which was released in its initial form in [...]
Noah Bailey had the significant pleasure of speaking with Calexico's Joey Burns for this week's paper--and he got some good stuff out of him, too. Especially, I think, toward the end of the piece, w... Continue reading "Giveaway: Three Pairs Of Tickets To See Calexico And The Acorn At The Granada Tomorrow Night" >
