Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars It's been about three whole years since we last heard from Raleigh's Bowerbirds ; their last effort Upper Air definitely warmed all our hearts. After one listen to The Clearing , you'll be glad the band waited; this record's assuredly the best thing they've put together with their unique blend of folk, strings and sweet melodies. Momentarily a guitar is plucked as "Tuck the Darkness In" begins, but the band quickly [...]
While it might not be the most unique album of the year, it sure is beautiful.

Tuck the Darkness In - Bowerbirds Formed in 2006, Bowerbirds (@thebowerbirds) are an American folk band rooted in Raleigh, North Carolina. Once a trio, the group is now comprised of five members and led by Philip Moore (vocals, guitar) and Beth Tacular (vocals, accordion). The band, which includes Mark Paulson (vocals, multi-instrumentalist) and the addition of Yan Westerlund (drums) and Leah Gibson (vocals, synth, cello, keys), brings together the beautiful, almost haunting, sound of harmonies layered over strings, keys and drums. Their 2007 debut album, Hymns for a Dark Horse , [...]

Polyvinyl Usually when an interesting press release shows up in my inbox, the contents show up ad nauseum in my RSS, Twitter, Facebook, whatever over the next few hours - such is the nature of the press cycle in the digital age. But one of the best pieces of news over the last few days, at least for me, hasn't yet found its way into the internet echo chamber, and that's the anouncement of the return of Saturday Looks Good To Me . Not that I'm entirely surprised; the Ann Arbor, Michigan [...]

Justin Hollar I had actually forgotten how weird Alpinisms , the 2008 debut from New York's School Of Seven Bells was. It basically inverted the balance of pop-to-experimentalism of the Deheza sisters' former outfit On! Air! Library! and made itself it much more accessible than O!A!L!'s self-titled effort but was still willing to forgo the pop in parts to play with textures, exotic sounds and the interesting harmonies that their twin frontwomen could create. 20102s Disconnect From Desire was [...]

Six years deep into their career, it would appear that Bowerbirds have it mostly figured out. Their first full length effort, 2007's Hymns For A Dark Horse , showcased the songwriting talents of one Phillip Moore, just two years off his last release with North Carolina post-rockers Ticonderoga, in a more stripped down form than we had ever seen his work. Hymns... didn't move massive numbers of copies or garner widespread critical praise, but it did foreshadow the compositions to come on Upper Air . Due to to a more emphatic critical response, as [...]

Frank Yang Two records is not really a lot of data from which to plot a creative trajectory, but based on Sharon Van Etten's first couple records, you could make some projections. Her 2009 debut Because I Was In Love was simple and spare, elevated above your standard singer-songwriter fare by Van Etten's gorgeous bruise of a voice and her correspondingly confessional songwriting; 20102s mini-album epic showed what she could do with backing players, offering a perfect set of songs that arced from [...]

Bowerbirds - Beth Tacular and Phil Moore are the creative epicenter of this North Carolina band melding ambitious art/pop edge with audacious strains of modern folk...Beth's mysterious debilitating illness and the pair's on-off-on relationship stress behind them, they retreated newly inspired to their hand-built cabin in the woods for reflection and writing songs for their third album // Release : The Clearing (March 6, Dead Oceans) // Sounds like : the stakes are raised but the expanded production scope and more intricately twisting melodic lines never sound overworked or pretentious -- the odd [...]

In support for their killer upcoming album The Clearing, the Raleigh-based act Bowerbirds released a smart mini-documentary this week to gear up for the March 5th release. While the footage captures the group discussing the challenges that drove the creative process, it's really the quality of the music that pushes this project beyond that of a run-of-the-mill promo video. Folk music and chamber pop fans will want to keep this album on the radar as this looks like an early standout for 2012.
