The Walkmen lost me after 2002's Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me Is Gone . I liked Bows & Arrows well enough, but it was definitely lacking that certain je ne sais quoi, and so my interest in the band tapered off pretty rapidly. But do I like what I've heard thus far from their new one, You & Me ( full album stream here ), and you have to appreciate their gesture of offering a special $5 Amie St. download of the album, with all proceeds going to benefit [...]

Sad word came down today, via P-fork, that Beggars Group imprints Too Pure and Beggars Banquet have been absorbed into 4AD. Stereolab's next album will arrive on August 19th sporting 4AD and Duophonic logos. Sayonara, l'il Too Pure arrow. You'll be missed. Favorite Too Pure moments: Seefeel, "More Like Space." From start to finish, pretty damn breathtaking. My favorite release from Seefeel. Yes, even moreso than Quique . So sue me! Seefeel, "More Like Space" [...]
(photo credit: brian bruchman) Everyone makes mistakes, even (especially?) Robert Christgau . You may, of course, already be well aware of this fact -- but I bring it up because one of my efforts to sound like I knew what I was talking about (when in fact, I was merely hypothesizing) last week was perhaps a wee bit misguided. See, we incorrectly informed you that The Vanity Set 's late-night Saurday set at Southpaw would bring various aural referents that were in actuality not there . Which is to say, it [...]
Here's this week's mix. It's continuing on last week's semi-theme of being a little on the darker side. Last night was cold and windy and it was nice to lay in bed with a book and the Bows album, which I only just discovered. The mix is also a little bit eighties, what with the Thompson Twins, Falco, my all-time favorite Tom Waits song, and, um-well, maybe it's not so eighties besides that, unless you count New Order side project Monaco, who came out in 1997. The Remi Nicole song comes from the soundtrack to [...]
The Return of Rue Chaptal. Thanks again to Andrea -- one of her old mixes was a lifesaver for us Monday night -- we thought we'd share it with y'alls. Tres sophistiqué! (I mean, yes, that's totally a Ladytron cover of that naughty Tweet song!)
