DATE: 05-19-10 WRITER: Don Loder Alright ya mugs, So here it is, your newest load o' stuff that my sticky little fingers could - shall we say - liberate from the greater clutches of the music business. I'm still a little amazed at how easy it is - I'm not gonna lie; what with the [...]
I've been a big fan of a few up and coming East Coast bands such as Mardeen , The Danks , Two Hours Traffic , and Smothered in Hugs . While living with the music and watching what the bands were up to, I would find more and more great music. Well, a fine lad from THT and The Danks has now turned me on to another EC gem, Boxer The Horse . [...]
Sadly, this year I will be missing out on NXNE . I haven't posted in about a week, mostly due to knee surgery if you follow us on Twitter . While still suffering, three of our writers will be heading out to concerts all over the festival. We'll be having next day coverage by Nancy, George and Sheila. So while my preview took forever to write up, the concert reviews will be up a lot faster. Anyway here's a list of bands on the NXNE lineup: Health – I gave their new single, [...]

First things first, I have to apologize for the lack of media accompanying this post, as these days when we post a show review, they are usually enhanced by some stellar grainy pics and scratchy audio clips. For this past Friday's In-Flight Safety record release show however, we didn't manage to get either of those. My cameraless-ness was due to attending the SMU Time for Wine festivities (after drinking beers in the dark due to a car vs. power pole accident on Barrington street in Halifax) and the Ack didn't make it down to the show because he [...]

Sweet peanuts, 2008 is running out fast! I've only got a couple of days to get the rest of my lists in order before the year is in the books. In the spirit of pressing on, here are my favourite EPs of the last twelve months. Initially a much larger list, I scaled it back to my top 5 (not really intended to be in a particular order, but turns out its a good indication of my favourites from top to bottom). Looking at it now I realize these are all similarly upbeat, hook-laden doses of indie pop, [...]

Today's Canadian artist picks for best of the year come from Andrew Woods from Charlottetown, PEI's Boxer The Horse . The band is touring around a few venues in Charlottetown through the new year. The band was also recently nominated for four PEI Music Awards for this year. The nominations include Album of the Year, Artist of The Year, New Artist of The Year and Rock Recording of the Year. The nominations surround their album release The Late Show. Best of luck guys on the awards! Andrew Woods from the band sat down with us and gave us his [...]

That's right folks. Another solid evening of rock from your friends at herohill and iheartmusic . Last night the show we put together rocked off a large contingent of socks (post coming later) and hopefully we can keep that going tonight at Coconut Grove. Here's the skinny - 5 bands for 8 bucks. Three stellar local acts and two fantastic Ontario bands. Plus, it's right beside Pizza Corner, so you out of towners can jump over and get a donair after the show. Win win. Laura Barrett - (Toronto, ON) [...]

I've been listening to lots of enjoyable tuneage lately, but I haven't had a lot of time to blog about it. So while I've actually got a Saturday evening at home, why I don't I toss a few words your way about some of the stuff I've been digging lately. Boxer The Horse are an instantly likeable band from Charlottetown, P.E.I. who released their debut EP The Late Show several months ago. There's something about that East Coast brand of swinging jangle pop that never seems to [...]

Well, I haven't done one of these in quite a while. A rather long while. Ever since I went away on that vacation-thing. But I've settled comfortably back into this blogging routine, so there's most definitely no reason for me to come back around with a recap of my favourite tracks I wrote about during the course of the week. But considering that it's been a while, I won't limit myself to the usual five suspects, and instead list all my favourite songs since the last Rated Ox I did . [...]
"Jackson Leftfield" - Boxer the Horse Jaunty, nicely textured indie pop from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, of all (beautiful) places. Harmonica, acoustic guitar, synthesizer, and an intermittent electric guitar intermingle with uncanny merriment, while singer/guitarist Jeremy Gaudet exudes an amiable sort of lazy energy, sounding something like Ray Davies fronting a jam band (minus the jamming). This is music that makes you smile, as well as tap your toe. The harmonica brings you into the song and immediately makes me wonder: what happened to harmonicas? Outside of an [...]

Boxer the Horse is a band out of Charlottletown, Prince Edward Island, the smallest province in Canada. They are also very young with the majority of the band under 20 years, since I've turned 20 recently, this makes me feel old with my limited musical ability. Apparently, Boxer the Horse originates from Animal Farm, a book by George Orwell (the one who wrote the excellent 1984), which I must now borrow from the library to kill some time in my current state. Described by their promoter as indie pop, doesn't quite do it justice for Boxer the [...]

The majority of Boxer The Horse are still under 20 years old. The band recorded a short five song demo in 2007, only to sell out of the limited pressing of only 50 copies at one show to an enthusiastic group of French exchange students. The band soon went to work on their formal debut EP, The Late Show . I like how they named their band after a character in Animal farm , the [...]
We start out a little rowdy, calm down a wee, and then just bounce around a bit, i.e., the usual consistency. We love the songs, though, which is why we're here. Click green artist names for info; click song titles for audio. The Bleeding Hearts - Rehab Girl mp3 - from Nothin On But The Radio - The Doublenaught Records release by these Raleigh, North Carolinians will rock you up a treat. Go here
And bam, just like that, I'm back from vacationing. Did I say "early July?" Yeah, looks like I meant late July. Not that I knew that in advance. Like Beck said on an episode of Futurama: "We got into a serious thing." We started off with a trip to Ottawa, then one thing led to another, then we ended up stumbling into this other thing, then you sort of lose track of time; it's only once you get back to your usual thing do you fully realise that July has streaked away. It's [...]
Today's free and legal mp3 downloads: The Dawn Chorus is celebrating the release of its album, Florida St. Serenade by making its first two albums available as free and legal downloads. I first heard the band after reading Quinn Dalton's Book Notes essay for her short story collection; Stories from the Afterlife , and have been a fan since. Stream Florida St. Serenade [...]

Hopefully a regular feature on WHK, the Up-And-Comers category is meant to feature the most gumptious new Canadian indie bands making their debut on the scene. Hailing from Charlottetown, PEI and already receiving accolades for their debut ep, The Late Show , Boxer the Horse is a name with which you might want to make yourself familiar sooner than later. Simply put, with its six diverse tracks The Late Show exhibits more potential and vivacious know-how than most bands can fathom. Sure, there are comparisons [...]
Finding its home in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, what began as a folk duo consisting of guitarist/vocalist Jeremy Gaudet and bassist Richard MacLeod eventually grew into Boxer The Horse with the addition of drummer Andrew Woods and Isaac Neily on guitar and keys. Together for two years, the four almost 20-somethings have been performing around Charlottetown with a few stops in Halifax and a showcase at the 2008 East Coast Music Awards in Fredericton along the way. After recording a short five song demo, the limited [...]

myspace I will work harder . Those simple words were the identity of Orwell's classic character from Animal Farm and the namesake of this young band from PEI. While rock n' roll is said to be the voice of the working class and becoming a successful band takes an insane amount of thankless work, it's hard to imagine this poppy quintet plodding forward, blindly focused on completing their tasks, simply for the greater good of the common class. No, instead of relying on muscular, rehashed riffs, the band seems determined to form [...]
