White Fang More new music on the second hour of this week's Pampelmoose edition of the New Music Hour on Portland's 94.7FM. This show is devoted in its entirety to Portland bands. Just a handful of the hundreds of amazing bands in this city. Portland take a bow. I'm on 94.7FM with resident DJ Squid every [...]

As you read this, I am in California! I should have gotten off the plane in San Diego about an hour ago, and have hopefully made a dent in my NaNoWriMo project- which I have fallen gravely behind on (I should be near 12,500 words by Saturday)! All this vacation prep and writing leaves little time for sorting through all the newsfeeds, emails, music, etc., but I hope I've put something you'll all like here. Of not, come back next week, I'm sure there'll be something then. In the meantime, enjoy this week's Friday Mixtape, [...]
I didn't know what to expect when I put this one on. With a name like Boy Eats Drum Machine, I guess you can expect some beats, maybe some nice melodies. But it could also have been terrible - this could have been some half-assed emo kid who just bought a used Alesis. It's not, not by a long shot. Boy Eats Drum Machine - The Crack In The Sea. The promotional materials with this record say it's a cross between Morphine and David Bowie, and you know what? That's not far off. It's just weird enough to be interesting,...
M.I.A. Even more new music on the second hour of this week's Pampelmoose edition of the New Music Hour on Portland's 94.7FM. The playlist includes Portland bands Menomena and Boy Eats Drum Machine plus new music from Roots Manuva and The Very Best. I'm on air with resident DJ Squid every Tuesday and Thursday at 8PM. [...]
Presets live in Portland. Pic Justin Kent Another hour of new music on this week's New Music Hour on Portland's 94.7FM includes Portland musicians Boy Eats Drum Machine and A Weather, a new cut from MSTRKRFT and a Presets remix. I'm on air with resident DJ Squid every Tuesday and Thursday at 8PM. This is the [...]
The festival was in full-swing last night, with 18 venues featuring close to 90 bands, many of them filled to capacity. Everything we made it to was fantastic. Laura Gibson played the Doug Fir, with a set including some great new material that she finished recording this summer, and a hush fell over an otherwise typically chatty crowd. MP3: Laura Gibson (with Portland Cello Project) - Hand in Pockets MP3: Laura Gibson - Shake Sugaree (Podington Bear Remix) MP3: Laura Gibson - All the Pretty Horses Former Portlander Alela Diane [...]
Boy Eats Drum Machine We never really get to know what or who someone else is. How could we? Our heads are full of ourselves, and to fit another person in there, we'd have to empty ourselves out first. Playing...
Puuurrrr... Continuing with last weeks theme of the live mashup, Jon of Boy Eats Drum Machine has finished another mix of a cut we will be performing live on Saturday August 16th at Portland's Wonder Ballroom as part of show that's all about reconstructing songs by the Talking Heads and The Cure. Here we present 'PsychoBillie' [...]
My good friend Jon Ragel of Boy Eats Drum Machine invited me to "join" his band for a show at Portland's Wonder Ballroom on Saturday August 16th. The premise being that it is a Talking Heads and Cure cover show! Ha! But put Jon and Dave in a room and you're not going to get [...]

Okay, this is the crazy awesomest shit I've heard in a REALLY LONG TIME. I'll let Jon Ragel (Boy Eats Drum Machine) explain it himself. But just press play right now! Now heeeerrrrre's Jonny: Hi PDX peeps! BEDM will be a part of Wonder Ballroom's Talking Heads + Cure tribute night on Saturday 8/16. I've put together a live band lineup for the event, and instead of simply doing covers, we will be performing what I like to call 'Live Mashups'. Myself (vox/turntable), Dave Allen (bass), Benjy Rickard (guitar/synth), and Paul Alcott [...]
This event notice will stay at the top of my blog until August 1st, just scroll down for shows. I've been doing this gig on KPSU for six years now, can you believe it!!?! Crazy. That's 312 weekly episodes, seven address changes, eight Orange Alerts, two Britney Spears marriages, and one marriage and baby of my own. It's been priceless. As in, I don't get paid. And I suppose I don't mind; I'd rather do it and not make money than not do it at all. I'll be celebrating my show's [...]

Here at the T.C. we have a knack for presenting both sides of the coin whenever we turn our ears to a new release. Our intention isn't to steer away long-term fans, or dissuade new listeners, but the fact of the matter is that a first listen doesn't always (and really shouldn't usually ) produce a candied love affair. Those rights are reserved for the chosen few which happen upon our laps, and we don't often feature something we outright hate , but it [...]
"Pure awesomeness." That's how Jonny Ragel describes Menomena's Danny Seim—one of the several local drummers who helped make Ragel's debut as Boy Eats Drum Machine possible. Seim did so by contributing to Bridgetown Breaks, a collection of meant-for-sharing drum tracks that Ragel built 2005's Pleasure around. "He's so incredible as an artist and a musician," [...]
We here ("we" is me, of course, but doesn't it sound official?) at Bon Ton really enjoy the stylings of Boy Eats Drum Machine. They defy category, being neither rock nor pop nor electronica, and we approve of that. We like Jon Ragel's vox, which, when it's on, doesn't slur or screech or try for registers to which it is not suited. (Let us note here that BEDM's first album, "Pleasure," is available on Emusic, but discerning listeners will want to pick through it, as it is not all quality fare.) We also approve of [...]
Bon Ton, alas, must go on hiatus for 2 weeks. I will return, the week of August 7th, with more adorably witty comments and indie-flavored songs. Oh yes, you can't escape me. Meanwhile, since I will be traveling, I present a mix: I call it "Way Over In A Bucket Seat; the Driving Thru the Desert Mix," even though I'm not going to be driving through the desert. At least, not much. So! Music! Music to drive by! Or at least take to the gym. Let me make [...]
