Saturday night, I entered Philadelphia's The M Room way overdressed - cocktail dress and heels - having come straight from a wedding. I definitely stood out in the, what I'll call a "hipster" bar where jeans and vintage store finds dominate the fashion sense, but I wasn't about to risk missing a single second of [...]
Athens Popfest is like summer camp for indie pop and rock nerds. read more
The first day of music at Little Kings was launched in proper Popfest style when Brooklyn's Boy Genius took the stage in front of the small but enthusiastic crowd of music fans devoted enough to arrive early. Kicking off a festival set at 2 p.m. on a Wednesday is no easy task, but as soon as the intro guitar riffs and cymbals of "Tied in Two" melded into a wall of fuzz, you were immediately engaged. No warm-up songs necessary here. These guys meant business! Upon listening to the live set straight-through, I've realized Boy Genius [...]

Song 7 of 19 in the ...One Last Kiss retread , otherwise known as After the Last Kiss... Honeybunch's Arm In Arm was culled from their second single No More I Told You So's that was released by Slumberland. The band who called Providence, Rhode Island home, would end up releasing singles on Bus Stop, K, Summershine and Four Letter Words but never actually put out a full length album, which is something they have in common with [...]
Boy Genius have been pressuring me to listen to their new album, Anchorage, for a couple of weeks now. They have not yet resorted to death threats, but I felt it was imminent so I am finally making some room for the band on the ol' blog and cracking the plastic on their album! I'm kidding of course, I actually cracked the plastic when they told me they were kicking off their tour with a show in
It'd be easy to say Boy Genius sound like early R.E.M. or Pavement or a million other staple indie influences. In reality, it's difficult to accurately pinpoint Boy Genius. It's far easier to focus on what they aren't. They aren't really twee. They aren't really slacker rock. They aren't really [...]
Surely not one to shy away from a challenge (he deftly created his own genre with his half-whispered sound-bending hip-hop, blues/jazz/pop), and although tempted himself to keep out of the public eye when he doesn't need to be in it; Tricky cuts just that: a "tricky" , and almost illusive figure. Known simply as "Tricky Kid" even before the UK band Massive Attack had yet to release an album, this teenager grew up in a neighbourhood not dissimilar to this country's impoverished own. The dedication of Tricky's debut album "Maxinquaye" was a dedication [...]

Amoeba Amore The Dials Crunchy guitar chords that would cut straight through the walls of CBGB, raucous vocals that stop just short of inciting riots, pounding beats of swaggering confidence - The Dials provide a fabulous journey through 11 tracks of pure attitude. From balls out opener "Antonio," the band is clearly tuned in to the early days of New Wave. Of particular note is the jazzy "Sharp Teeth," which sounds like it came out of a noir spy flick, "Happy After All" with its infectious chorus, [...]

You Should Know Looking for some indie pop that could easily be more than a decade old but somehow still sounds fresh and new? I think I've found your band. Four-piece Brooklyn band Boy Genius creates shimmering pop music built on melodies, hooks, and simple yet catchy guitar parts. Their energy is comparable to older REM and they exhibit some of the loose slacker-rock sensibilities of Pavement. Mostly, Boy Genius knows how to pen a catchy song. Their new album Anchorage opens with "Radio Silence," a [...]

Brooklyn, NY With an initial listen to this Brookyln quartet, you may think Boy Genius is a UK band. Simplistic and melodic with a great blend of male/female vocals. "Radio Silence" Boy Genius on MySpace Boy Genius on The Hype Machine
There is a beautifully shambolic feel to this band Boy Genius from Brooklyn. Like they wandered into a studio, threw on their gear and played whatever popped into their heads. The music is in no way sequenced, is unlikely to be ever sung by the masses but it has such an inbuilt likeable quality it could catch on like a particularly virulent strain of the winter flu. Made up of 3 fellas and 1
