Boy In Static , the San Francisco duo of Alexander Chen and Kenji Ross, is set to release their new album, Candy Cigarette , in March. Before I get to some info about the new album, let's talk history. Chen's small demo album was originally discovered in 2003 by The Notwist (one of my favorite bands), which is totally unsurprising, considering their music sounds identical at times. Chen then joined Ross in 2004 to make a live band and the two have been Boy In Static ever since. Musically, Boy In Static appeals to those [...]

The hopelessly 80's sounding synth-pop band Freezepop excels at creating bouncy, dance tunes that get every true dork's heart-a-pounding. More commonly associated with its work in the video game industry (see Guitar Hero, Rock Band or Amplitude), the Boston outfit proved they could show us all a good time while rokk-ing out Thursday night at Richmond's "Home of Live Music," Alley Katz. First things first however, Plushgun kicked off the evening with fun, electronic and totally danceable tunes that got everyone super pumped for the main event. Although there was a bit of mic [...]

Nothing like a good ole laaaaazzzyy Sunday. If you do happen to make it out of the house today, there are a couple of supremely good shows. The first being at a new venue in Alexandria, VA called the Lab . It's a all ages benefit show for Cal Robbins and features performances by Tereu Tereu, Bellman Barker, and Jawbox. If you like electro pop travel on up to Philly to catch Freezepop, Boy In Static, and The Model at the North Star Bar . Or you can just relax on this mellow [...]

I think I am finally coming out of my slump from the holidays. The end of 2007 was pretty overwhelming with the amount of albums that came out. I was starting to get a little burned out from everything I was listening to. But with a new year finally comes a little refreshment and their are a few albums I am really starting to get into now. And since we haven't done one of these in a while I thought I would play catch-up by posting a long one. [...]

Speed of Dark favorites of the year must have been released so that readers can buy them. It doesn't matter whether it's a label-release or a self-release, but songs available only as free downloads or promotional MP3s can't qualify. I am not a professional music critic. I can't discourse on chord techniques or whether beats were dropped or misplaced. I read what others say, but I make up my own mind what I like. Sometimes my taste leads me to the same artists the pros like, and sometimes not. These are my choices [...]

The 'We Don't Need Looks' Award Arcade Fire - Neon Bible To succeed in life, you need to have looks. No, seriously it's true, don't let those stuffy activists fool you. But if you look like a camel's ass on a plate of spaghetti bolognaise, then the least you can do is get yourself a hot chick. No one understands this better than me. Heeyaaarrrr. Arcade Fire - Windowstill The Shy Guy [...]

Glitch-click acoustica that doesn't compromise drenching guitar melodies for anything more synthesized. One of the handful of artists who bring their unplugged skills to this amazing genre. For fans of Four Tet circa 'Rounds' and dntel. mp3: Boy in Static - Bellyfull
Drift into my pores pretty drifting music from another time and place. You are soaked in loveless melodies, scarred chords and orchestral manoeuvres. Be thankful that your masters have spent their Boston days in search of a recipe that will leave some of us open mouthed and pensive. Building on the newborn journey, things have turned slightly violet and the soft undertow will pull at internal

PowerSolo is this Danish band I was emailed about last week and after taking a listen or two to a couple of their songs, I'll have to say that I'm enjoying them. I've been obsessed with French and Swedish bands the past year or so, so it's nice to hear some good music from other countries. PowerSolo is a kind of Americana/rockabilly band (and yes, Danish as well) that has some pretty nice psychedelic bits in it. Their second album It's RACEDAY... And Your Pussy Is GUT!! came out in America on [...]
I have been living in a cave and discovered Boy in Static about 3 years after the debut album, Newborn came out. I decided that I'd like to review it anyway, because 1) good music withstands time, 2) who knows maybe some of you may have not heard of it and 3)...
Boy in Static - Where it Ends Add to My Profile | More Videos I really enjoyed Boy In Static's support slot with 13 & God back in 2005 at Toronto's Lee's Palace. I enjoyed it so much that I have kept a close watch on his development. With one album under his belt already ( "Newborn" which was released by German label Alien Transistor , Boy In Static is set to unleash his next installment [...]
Boy in Static "Where it Ends" dir. by Yoshi Sodeoka/C505 If upon first glance this reminds you of your favorite video blog or least favorite fan-made YouTube production, you aren't too far off base. Director Yoshi Sodeoka uses the DIY aesthetic of mass-produced internet videos to compliment this tale of doomed and distant lovers, in the process commenting on the entire culture of computer romance. While his attempt fails to develop into something grand, it quietly delves into some very interesting areas. Though their is only one actor in this [...]
